04/07/2005 03:00 PMTo interoperate or not to interoperate? That is the question to which
Apple said 'no' and which the US Congress is now debating. A mandate
is under discussion across the pond which would oblige Apple to ensure
iTunes and its other digtal music products worked with offerings from
archrivals including Microsoft and Real.

People at Work Who Get It
06/23/2004 03:05 AMNothing gets me more jazzed up about work than meeting with someone
who really gets it--either right off the bat or during the course of
our meeting. Nothing. I had one of those meetings today. You know the
kind. The meeting request comes in and you scratch your head for a
minute. Then it dawns on you: this is either going to be a lot of work
trying to make someone understand what all this stuff is about, or...
it'll...

01/22/2004 02:14 AMFrom an
entertaining post on an interesting Metafilter
thread:
The BBC is best when it's at its least domestic and
condescending: its radio and web output is better than its TV news
(BBC World excepted) and the World Service is best of all. There's a
reason why people who work at Bush House feel superior: they are
superior.
For the record, I work at Broadcasting House, which is kind of like
the BBC's version of the Lost City of Atlantis.

04/21/2004 02:09 PMSome people really do need to get a hobby. A group of small
businesses in the UK is apparently
angry at an amusement park for coming up with a silly ad
campaign that tries to get people to visit
IHateWork.co.uk. The
Federation of Small Businesses actually believes that this site is
making people hate work and skip out for a day to go to the amusement
park. Do they actually believe that people who were thrilled with
going into work every day suddenly realized, after looking at this
site, that they really hate their job and should skip out for a day?
Instead of getting all upset about this, perhaps they should have just
taken a day off and gone to, I don't know... an amusement park?

[etech] People-to-People (Microsoft)
02/11/2004 09:36 PM Lily Cheng from Microsoft Research is talking about how people
represent themselves on line. The closer the friends, the fuzzier they
want the representations. We need to make social tools fluid enough to
account for the way people's lives change. We need easy access to
friends and people important to us. We want sponatenous interactions.
Lily's group went to a mall and asked people to draw their social
interactions, and gots lots of circles and lines. Microsoft studied
this and built a "personal map" that clusters people based on who they
send email to (TO and CC) and how...

computers to be unwrapped during the holiday season, more than 80
percent will be used to go online and search the Web's more than 92
million gigabytes of data (comparable to a 2 billion-volume
encyclopedia). Getting online is the easy part, finding a useful Web
page is a bit harder—keeping track of a useful Web page is another
issue altogether.
People have devised many tricks—such as
sending e-mails to themselves or jotting on sticky notes—for keeping
track of Web pages, but William Jones and Harry Bruce at the
University of Washington's Information School and Susan Dumais of
Microsoft Research have found that often people don't use any of them
when it comes time to revisit a Web page. Instead, they rely on their
ability to find the Web page all over again.
