Cynthia Plaster Caster has been making plaster casts of the erect penises of rock stars since 1968. Jimi Hendrix's "very statuesque and antique-looking" member broke the mold, but she "managed to reconnect the head to the shaft to the testicles." (12-06)

Auto-mounting media devices

Auto-mounting media devices 04/30/2004 12:37 AM

What follows is an interesting insight into the minds of the eHome, Media PC press.

As Andrew Grundner (the writer of this story) gushes on about how cool this closed system is, he discovers the convienience of auto-mounting devices, and you have to wonder: "where has this guy been?"

But not everybody made the immediate jump, as Arthur Van Hoff and Rob Currie did (with their Strangeberry platform), that ZeroConf (which Apple calls Rendezvous) is the perfect technology for auto-mounting home media devices.  The only difference is that they based their work on an open platform, while this MediaBolic product is closed and proprietary.

The idea of ZeroConf/Rendezvous is that products from a wide range of vendors could all work on the same 'auto-mounting' consumer media network.

Now why oh why would MediaBolic think we'd lock ourselves into THEIR proprietary network, when we're all joining up on the open network?  'Cause they got some sort of patent?

And more importantly - "why wasn't Andrew Grundner asking these questions of them?"

Now that TiVO owns Strangeberry watch for some next generation products that will make Comcast's Moxi product look like a joke.

Integrating the family's media collection and aggregating a myriad of home media services; such as digital downloading, photo prointing or food delivery - is gonna be big business.

And watch for major plays from Broadband Mechanics in this area.

Meanwhile here's the article that just set me off!

Mediabolic Delivering on the Digital Home Concept.

Mediabolic Delivering on the Digital Home Concept

 Category: Editorials - April 29, 2004

By Alexander Grundner

MediabolicToday I have seen the future and it's not coming from Microsoft -- at least not yet. I got a chance to meet with Jeremy Toeman, associate VP of Mediabolic, for the first time, for an informal get-together. For those unfamiliar with the company, Mediabolic is one of the leaders in the middleware software space for connected home devices. Their flagship software product, the M1 Entertainment Platform, can be found powering many notable products like the Denon NS-S100 Digital Media Server, which won TechTV's "Best of Show" at CES in January, and Creative's SoundBlaster Wireless Music Adapter.

Over lunch we discussed the state of the industry, and convergent devices currently coming to market and on the horizon. Overall, we were pretty much in agreement with the general direction device manufactures were taking consumers in. But things got really interesting when he asked me if I wanted to see of demo of M1 platform at work.

Back at the office, Mediabolic has terrific demo room setup, configured with networked computers and a myriad of M1 enabled connected media devices. I assumed he was going to show me what each product did individually and then move on to the next product, but I was just half right. He went beyond that by pointing out how each device is actually recognized by all the computers running the M1 server software. What's more, all networked M1 enabled PCs can populate all the connected media devices with content stored on each PC's hard drive without any special configuration (an industry first -- this floored me). In other words, if you are using a media adapter in one room, you will see all the digital files available from a networked M1 enabled PC, and if a second or third M1 enabled PC is turned on, then all their additional files will become immediately available.

This function, that I was never aware of, puts a new face on connected entertainment. The idea has always been to setup a shared digital media server to distribute content around the house -- just configure each networked device to pull content from one central location. Made sense, but Mediabolic's no configuration, auto-recognize and populate solution is way more advanced, and provides a better user experience.

All in all, I enjoyed my meeting, but came away impressed with the fact that Mediabolic is company that actually delivers on the promise of interoperable connected devices for the Digital Home. And best of all, anyone can use M1 enabled products with existing networking and PC hardware equipment.

No 60 gb iPod according to Apple 07/20/2004 05:43 PM

My 30 gig iPod is full to the rim, and since I have been collecting an average of 300 megs of legal non copyright infringing unknown artist music a week, I need some more room. My wife wants the 30 I have now, so I am hoping that Engadget is correct and think Apple is bluffing. I can hold her off a couple of months but I am hoping that they do have a 60 gig model in works as I will be buying one if they do. The wife says she doesn't want a mini she wants the real deal. You fellows out their understand what the means. [Engadget]

Should Apple Have An iPod IPO?

Should Apple Have An iPod IPO? 05/05/2004 12:04 AM
Business Week is suggesting that, for all the congratulatory backslapping the folks around Apple have been doing around the iPod and iTunes, they'd be smart to spin off their music business now. The reasoning is that the music side of Apple probably has a much higher perceived value than real value right now. While Apple has been able to command considerable marketshare in both the downloadable music market (even though they don't make any money there) and the handheld music player market, the writer doesn't believe they can hold either position. They've been able to get away with being the high-priced provider so far, but competitors are nipping at their heals. Both the hardware and the downloadable music services risk becoming commodity products, and spinning out a portion of the business and taking the cash would let Apple move on to the next big thing. Of course, the main problem with this idea is that it doesn't appear that Steve Jobs believes the market is going to become commoditized (though, the article suggests, recent insider selling at Apple means other executives aren't so sure).
