Time For Flight Mode On Your Mobile
Phone
07/02/2004 01:01 PMA few months ago, we pointed out that, thanks to a growing number of
"smart phones," flight attendants were often having trouble with
passengers who wanted to use the PDA functionality of their phones,
but had the
wireles
s transmitter turned off. Unfortunately, there's no easy way for
anyone to see quickly if the phone really has its wireless abilities
shut off, or if the person is just saying that to keep the flight
attendants off their back. So, now, the Consumer Electronics
Association is trying to come up with a standard way to
e
asily display that a mobile phone is in "flight mode" -- where the
user can make use of applications on the phone, but isn't transmitting
a wireless signal. Next thing you know, they're going to need another
way of indicating to everyone that the camera part of a camera phone
isn't on...

Shifting Trends In Customer Ownership
Between Wireless Carriers And Phone
Makers
04/21/2004 04:47 AMNearly a year ago we had a post where we discussed the fact that many
shoppers on the market for a mobile phone service focused on
what
phone they wanted more than what service provider they
wanted. So, if they wanted a certain Nokia phone, their choices of
service providers was limited to those who sold that particular phone.
A few months later we looked at
how the
carriers should respond to this and one of the predictions was
that carriers would start to focus increasingly on
white-label
phones where smaller, lesser known device manufacturers would
build phone handsets to spec and brand them with the carriers name.
It appears that's exactly what's happening. The carriers have been
doing their best to
take the customer ownership back from the handset makers, and it
appears to be working. More and more people identify their phone by
the brand of the service provider, rather than the handset maker. Of
course, the article uses Nokia and Motorola as the example cases of
the big name handset makers likely to lose out - and back it up with
Nokia's poor earnings. However, the story was written before
Motorola
posted very impressive earnings due to their handset sales taking
off again. Maybe this is one battle that isn't over yet.

EasyMobile: a mobile phone company
without phones or towers
08/11/2004 09:48 AMThe EasyGroup (who provide the discount EasyJet airline and the cheap
EasyInternet cafes) have launched a mobile phone company called, what
else, EasyMobile. EasyMobile -- which leases capacity on other
carriers' networks -- won't give away free phones with their plans;
instead, they'll just sell you a SIM card and rely on you to find a
phone somewhere. Given that most mobile phone carriers give you a new
phone annually if you threaten to quit, a lot of Easy's ptoential
customers have a wealth of easily unlockable phones kicking around,
ready to be used with an Easy SIM. And since Easy isn't giving away
phones, it can roll those savings back into cheaper airtime and
services.
EasyMobile is to be launched in December at the latest on the British
market and if all goes well the service will be expanded to the Czech
Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, the
Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain.

Man Angry At Mobile Phone Service,
Starts Throwing Phones
05/14/2004 03:14 PMThese days, with things like number portability around, if you don't
really like your mobile phone provider, you can simply change
providers. Apparently, that wasn't what a man in North Dakota wanted,
though. He went to the local Verizon Wireless store, pissed off about
something, and when yelling at employees (his original intention)
didn't satisfy him, he started to
fling mobile phones around the store causing $2,000
worth of damages and injuring (not badly) an employee. Of course, you
have to wonder about his claim that he only intended to yell at
employees. Before he started his fling fest he apparently took off
his shirt (?!?) and
put on safety goggles. Amusingly, this was
done at a Verizon Wireless store - and Verizon Wireless tends to get
some of the best marks for customer service.
Recording Industry To Sue Mobile Phone

Recording Industry To Sue Mobile Phone
Operator Over MP3 Playing Phones
06/03/2004 01:45 PMBack in April we had what we hoped was an April Fool's joke: that the
Korean music industry had forced
mobile
phone operators to make their MP3-playing mobile phones destroy
MP3s. The plan was originally to force the phones degrade the
quality of MP3s, but eventually a plan was worked out to force the
phones to delete any MP3s after 72 hours. Apparently, none of this
was enough, and the industry is now
looking to sue. With all the success of both broadband and
wireless technologies in Korea, it's amazing that an industry could be
so backwards to believe that they can actually grow a market by
breaking the applications that people want.

03/14/2005 06:10 PMATP Electronics Inc., a leading manufacturer of digital flash media
products, today announced that it is in mass production of high
capacity dual voltage RS-MMC (DV RS-MMC). The dual voltage (DV)
feature allows for compatibility with devices running on the
conventional 3.0V as well as with the dual voltage 3.0/1.8V devices.
The low voltage feature translates to much lower power consumption,
meaning longer battery life for both today and tomorrow’s mobile
digital devices. Card capacities of 128MB and 256MB are available
immediately, with 512MB available in March. [PRWEB Feb 20, 2005]
