Brainstorm 2004 session notes - The
decline in America's reputation

Brainstorm 2004 session notes - The
decline in America's reputation
07/15/2004 12:18 PM

Now is tutorial session: The decline in America's reputation - Keith Reinhard w/ Pattie Sellers - What imact does it have on the U.S. and American brands? Reinhard will speak about a major new study.

Here are my notes. They are rough notes and may be a bit inaccurate or unclear.

Most people associate America with American's brands. Interesting to note that Carly Fiorina said that she didn't think that she suffered from America's bad imaged in response to a question by Martin Varsavsky.

"If you must talk, can you at least lower the volume..." - advice by foreigner to American about their voice.

The presentation made it clear that people outside of America have many negative feelings towards America and that most American's didn't care. The question they are addressing is, what can businesses in America do?

Tools to help Americans behave seems to be one of the answers...

Singaporean participant : suggesting that it's not just behavior of individuals, but that financial and business decisions made in America impact people in other countries that also affects opinions about America.

It's not business that's the biggest problem, it's US policy. It's the people who can cause changes in US policy and the only way to get people to change is to get them to understand what people think of the US. Most people don't know.

Chinese participant : doing all this work to get US image back will never get the image back to the original big brother image of the US and maybe the goal should be to just become a global peer.

African participant : is there a way for cultural exchange that is less superficial than movies and brands. Maybe people are more similar than we think. How about exchange programs that allow people to live together.

Japanese participant : Q: To what extent does change of government affect how people hate America. A: Resentment has grown over a long period of time, not just during this administration. "Insensitive, arrogant and materialistic." These issues we can address without just government change. Business could address non-government issues and also influence government.

Politics: Small-world Phenomena and the
Dean Campaign II

Politics: Small-world Phenomena and the
Dean Campaign II
01/07/2004 06:29 PM
The difficulty in building a political network like Dean is that it is extremely difficult to manufacture small-world dynamics.  The weak links derived from weblogs and other forms of social technology are made via intentional actions by the network's participants.  They can't be forced or planned.  They also are unlikely to form without help.  These intentional cross connections serve to radically reduce the average connection length of the network (the distance between any two nodes on the network).Hence the perception that the community is a small world, even if it is composed of hundreds of thousands of participants.  Operationally, short connection lengths translate into a community that acts with a speed and decisiveness not seen in authoritarian or random networks.

The knee-jerk reaction among political managers looking at the Dean network would be to set up a candidate weblog, set up some meetup.org gatherings, and build some software.  However, that is far from what is needed to set the process that would lead to small-world phenomena in motion.

Politics: Small-world Phenomena and the
Dean Campaign

Politics: Small-world Phenomena and the
Dean Campaign
01/07/2004 06:30 PM
The Dean campaign is reliant on small-world dynamics for its power.  The cross connections of egalitarian weak links of Deanie weblogs and the aristocratic Dean hub weblog serve to amplify good or positive information moving through the system.Of course, this can cut the other way too.  Bad or negative information can be amplified out of proportion in this type of network.

My guess is that the Dean network is composed of relatively isolated clusters of nodes that rely on high throughput conduit nodes for connectivity.  If this is true, then the Dean hub and software strategy is correct. It is using the hub weblog to pump information to the high-throughput conduit weblogs using RSS (which strengthens them).

Of course, the Dean campaign isn't the only organization using the power of Internet enabled small-world networks.  Groups across the world are doing the same, including terrorists.  Terrorists?  Yes.  The rise of both the Internet and the first global terrorist organization (that could challenge the world's only remaining superpower) is closely linked.

Stupid hotspot connection processes

Stupid hotspot connection processes 02/10/2004 02:47 AM
I tried to check my email during a stopover in Frankfurt from the Luftansa lounge.  Good news -- they have a Vodaphone WiFi hotspot.  But there's one problem.  Signing up to connect to the Hotspot requires that you receive a password on your mobile phone via SMS.  My Sprint PCS phone doesn't work in Europe.  Adding insult to injury, none of the landline phones here in the lounge allow outgoing toll-free calls.  So I can't even reach the Vodaphone help line to see if there's another way to log in.

I can understand the convenience of SMS, but why should connecting your laptop to a WiFi hotspot need to involve a text message to your mobile phone?  Doing the security over the Net via SSL seems perfectly acceptable, as it is for virtually all online purchases.  It's as though a catalog retailer told me to go respond to an email in order to accept my credit card over the phone.

Oh well, I guess I'll have to wait until I get to Helsinki to connect (and to upload this post!).
