Food Force takes Internet by storm
Food Force takes Internet by storm
06/05/2005 11:20 PMMore than one million players from 40 different countries have now
downloaded the United Nations Food Force game since its launch six
weeks ago. Designed to educate kids about hunger by working alongside
a crack team of emergency aid workers, the unexpected high demand for
the game has caught organisers off guard.
Immediately after the game’s launch, download servers were handling
over 4,000 simultaneous requests for Food Force. "We knew the game was
good, but neither of our hosting partners, Internet2 in Washington,
D.C., or K Group in Italy, expected demand like this," said Neil
Gallagher, Director of Communications for WFP. Yahoo! stepped up to
help and now offers hosting support through its Yahoo! Games portal.
Available as a free download, the game contains six different missions
for children 8-13 years old, who are faced with a number of realistic
challenges. In a race against time, they must feed thousands of people
in the fictitious island of Sheylan. They get to pilot helicopters
while looking out for hungry people, negotiate with armed rebels
blocking a food convoy and use food aid to help rebuild communities.
“Not one shot was fired – unusual in games these days,” said John
Powell, WFP Deputy Executive Director for Fundraising and
Communications. “From the United States to India, the game has kids
and teachers excited about playing as well as learning more about
world hunger. We’ve struck the right balance between entertainment,
game play and communicating a global issue like hunger.”
The game is supported by a community web site which includes teacher
lesson packs on world hunger available in seven languages. Thousands
of kids have posted feedback along with their highest scores and a
tracker keeps players updated on the player with the current high
score.
Versions of the game are available for Mac and Windows as a free
internet download from www.food-force.com.

iPod Your BMW: iPod Mini Yes, Mini

06/25/2004 07:15 AM
As eagle-eyed
reader Thomas Shebest pointed out to me, it looks as if Apple has
removed the Mini (car) from its BMWYourIpod page. Either the Mini
isn't supported any longer, or, more likely, someone within BMW's
marketing department didn't want to dillute the Beemer brand with
their low-end cousin. Whichever -- it's still been removed from the
site.

AirClick Remote for iPod and iPod mini, a remote control designed, as
you might have guessed, to work with Apple's iPod and iPod mini. The
AirClick Remote is different from most iPod remote controls because it

feet away, according to Griffin. It's shipping now for US$39.99.

What's cooler than hanging with your fellow iPod users on Miami's
South Beach on September 1st? How about going home with a brand new
iPod mini in your pocket?
Yeah, that probably got your attention. But thanks to event sponsors
iPodResQ, the iPod mini is just one prize among many that we'll be
giving away at the South Beach iPod Garage Party. So what do you have
to do to win? All you have to do is show up with your iPod, connect it
to our sound system, and play "DJ" for twelve minutes as you share the
highlights of your own music library with the rest of us (as many
songs as you like, as long as it fits within the time limit). Yep,
it's your very own twelve minutes of fame.

iPod, iPod mini
08/13/2004 07:17 AMGriffin Technology has introduced
RoadTrip, a 3-in-1 device that provides an FM transmitter, charger and cradle
for all dock-capable iPod and iPod mini MP3 players. The transmitter
broadcasts your music on any FM frequency on your car stereo, with a
backlit display that shows which frequency is in use, while the
charger keeps your iPod's battery at full capacity. The RoadTrip plugs
into any 12-volt outlet or cigarette lighter in your car and its
transmitter unit can be removed and plugged into a USB port on your
computer, enabling music broadcast from it to any nearby FM stereo.
Griffin has left the top of the US$79.99 device open for use with
other iPod accessories, which means RoadTrip isn't compatible with the
1G and 2G iPods that have FireWire ports on top.

HP Selling iPod Mini
HP Selling iPod Mini
06/06/2005 12:09 AM
Yee Haw. HP has dipped another
toe into the waters of oblivion by continuing to cross-brand the iPod.
I would love to see the numbers on this project in terms of units sold
and revenue gained. While it is obvious no one can kill the Apple
behemoth, they could maybe try by making an intelligent PMP with some
downloadable content. No, we're stuck with 5 million crunky little
MP3/photo viewers, a few expensive PMPs, the PSP, and a nation that
looks longingly to the skies for aliens who will finally bring us the
subsidized, sub-$200 full-color PMP with good content.

iPod mini Review: 8.7 out of 10
03/22/2005 03:43 PMReviewing the second generation iPod mini, CNET editors gave it an 8.7
out of 10 rating, stating The iPod brand has become synonymous
with excellent portable audio players, and the second-generation Apple
iPod mini carries on the tradition with its fashionable, intelligent
design. Apple has made precious few (but all necessary) updates to its
stylish microdrive player, which is a good thing since it was already
a winner. [Mar 21, 2005]
