New AA and AAA Batteries

New AA and AAA Batteries

New AA and AAA Batteries 04/07/2005 03:56 PM

Do you get tired of your kids saying "I need some batteries" being a steward of thinking about the environment we use chargeable batteries but from time to time I need to use a regular battery.

Panasonic has announced a AA and AAA batteries that will last twice as long and will be on the market soon. Good news for all of us and this is a good move to preserve the environment. [LockerGn ome]

Building Better Batteries

Building Better Batteries 12/24/2004 12:29 PM
David Pescovitz: My latest article for TheFeature is about new battery designs for mobile devices, from an onboard nuclear trickle charger that harnesses radioactive energy to a microbattery made with the same techniques used to fabricate computer chips.
"In late 18th century, Italian physicist Luigi Galvani shocked the public by demonstrating that an amputated frog's leg twitched when touched with certain metals. Galvani was convinced that energy stored in the frog's leg caused the jerk. He called the accumulated juice "animal electricity." Galvani's friend Alessandro Volta called it nonsense. To prove that the energy came from the metal, not the flesh, Volta eventually made a sandwich of silver, moist cardboard, and zinc. His device also spurred frogs' legs to spasm. In the end, Volta won the intellectual battle and also invented the battery. Two hundred years later, the technology hasn't changed much."

A look at iPod batteries

A look at iPod batteries 03/19/2005 03:27 AM
Since it’s debut in 2001, iPod users have had to contend with the thorny issue of battery replacement. Apple iPods are not unique in the world of rechargeable devices, writes Lance Ulanoff of PC Mag.com. All of the MP3 players on the market use rechargeable batteries, however some are designed for easy battery replacement by the owner. In his comprehensive article, Ulanoff outlines Apple’s battery replacement policy and gives the background in what has been a contentious issue for many iPod owners. “Maybe Apple made a mistake by not making them so consumers could replace their own batteries, but perhaps that's the price you pay for that much-lauded Apple industrial design,” Ulanoff concludes. “So please, enough with the wild conspiracy theories and the threats of class-action lawsuits. The iPod's a good player. Apple's not trying to pull a fast one, and some of you need to learn a little more about rechargeable battery care.”

Back; Oxyride Batteries

Back; Oxyride Batteries 12/27/2004 11:20 AM

Good morning, internet friends. Another Christmas has come and gone, and yet, I am still without a Nintendo DS. If my attempt to find one in a store yesterday was any indication, they've been a big hit—both games and systems have been impossible to find. Fortunately, my little brother's arms are very pliable, enabling me to bend them behind his back with only the slightest of pressure, popping his DS from his grasp into mine. Small family are the best kind to steal from.

It's good to be back in the bloggy saddle, though, so let those tips flow like the sap of the nog bush. Also, feel free to send in links to your favorite reviews this year from across the internet. I'd like to take a look back at everyone's favorites and compare them with mine.

Also, look! A new AA battery that lasts twice as long but costs only 10 percent more. If Nintendo wouldn't have used rechargables inside the DS, you'd have gotten a nice segue.

Flashlight For A Variety Of Batteries

Flashlight For A Variety Of Batteries 09/15/2004 01:39 PM
Sometimes it's the simplest ideas that make a lot of sense. As people in Florida have been stocking up on batteries for their flashlights, it reminds you how you always need to make sure you have the right batteries around for your flashlights. They all seem to take different size batteries, and people always end up with random spare D or C batteries they don't know what to do with. One company is trying to solve that problem by creating a flashlight that will work with AA, C and D cell batteries with the flick of a switch. They claim the flashlight will show just as much light with any of the options, but the weaker batteries won't last as long.

So I pick up the cell and call home and ask my wife to put my daughter on the phone and I ask here what she was doing standing on the counter with her hands in the cabinet that has candy.

I get silence on the line as she tries to figure out how i knew well thats was the extent of the fun I have had with a webcam, but it seems other people are being innovative and putting webcams in all kinds of interesting places and running them remotely. Lithium ion battery recharges in one

Lithium ion battery recharges in one

03/29/2005 08:50 PM
Toshiba Corp. has developed a lithium-ion battery the company said features the short rechargeable time of capacitors and the energy capacity of conventional lithium-ion batteries. Toshiba's new battery can recharge 80 percent of the battery's energy capacity in one minute, approximately 60 times faster than the typical Li-ion batteries.

The energy density is 150 to 250 Wh (Watt-hour)/liter, equal to the lower range of energy densities existing lithium ion batteries have. Advanced Li-ion rechargeable batteries reach densities of 600 Wh/l. "It should be the world first lithium ion battery that can be charged in one minute. The battery has a big potential. It could be used for mobile phones in the future, but we put the priority on applications such as automobiles that require quick recharging time and large cycle time," said Norio Takami, Laboratory leader of Advanced Functional Materials laboratory at Toshiba's Corporate Research and Development Center.

Lithium ion Battery Which Charges in One
Minute
03/30/2005 04:59 PM

Toshiba has developed a new Lithium-ion battery which charges up to 80% of it’s capacity in just 1 minute.  Toshiba's prototype battery has a capacity of 600mAh and measures.8mm thick, 62mm high and 35mm deep. It was demonstrated in hard disc music player for about 10 minutes by charging 5 milliwatts in 5 seconds. According to a Toshiba Lab spokesman, the battery shows less than 1 percent deterioration in capacity after 1,000 cycles of discharging and recharging. The battery is planned to be available in 2006. Here are more details from the eetimes.com.

Toshiba achieved the breakthrough by using nanoparticles of several hundred nanometers coated uniformly on the negative electrode and newly developed electrolytic solution. This stable formulation does not react with lithium ions at the cathode in a manner that would lower the battery's cycle time. The electrolytic solution and nanoparticles enable large number of lithium ions move quickly to the cathode and store in the particles in recharging mode. With the stable electrolyte solution, the battery discharges 80 percent of its capacity at minus 40 degrees centigrade, compared to 100 percent discharge at 25 degrees centigrade for conventional Li-ion batteries. In the high temperature operation, Toshiba reported that the capacity deteriorates by only 5 percent at temperatures of 45 degrees centigrade after 1,000 cycles of discharging and recharging.

Toshiba says it has developed a light and thin prototype battery that recharges 80 percent of capacity in just a minute, and it will market it commercially in 2006. The development "makes long recharge times a thing of the past," the company said in a statement to AFP. One minute is roughly 60 times faster than typical lithium-ion batteries. The new battery measures 62 millimeters (2.48 inches) by 35 and is 3.8 millimetres thick. It also has a long life, losing only one percent of capacity after 1,000 cycles of discharging and recharging and can operate at temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius (minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit), the company said.

As you would imagine, there are a couple technicalities to this figure. First of all, you need to be playing WMA files; your maximum battery life with MP3 is 210 hours. (Oh damn). You also need to use one of those external batteries - you know, the ones you somehow connect with a cable to the CD player. But even if you choose not to, you still get a 130 hour playback time of MP3 audio. Pretty swell, considering even the latest hard drive-based players get, what, 20-some hours of playback?
