Just in time for JavaOne, I got me a new Thinkpad R50 laptop (specs here, but with 512Mb). At 6.8lbs it's a bit heavier than the T41 I initially considered, but the $200+ price difference just didn't seem worth it for what (weight aside) is effectively the same machine... Is That A Laptop Or A Phone?

Is That A Laptop Or A Phone? 02/19/2004 11:28 AM
Intel is now pushing computer makers to build phones directly into laptops. At first, I wondered why this was necessary, since it's easy enough to install a softphone - but they're actually talking about the hardware aspect. The idea is that on the cover of the laptop, you'd have a screen and phone buttons, and the system could be used even if the computer was in sleep mode. Initially, the phone would be a VoIP phone, but they also want to add cellular service. The screen also will integrate with some email programs so you could check your email without opening up the computer. While this certainly has a novelty factor, I wonder how big a market there really is for such things. Most people who would be remotely interested in this have a mobile phone already. Are they really going to be that interested in adding additional phone service just for their computer? Also, the way this offering is described, it sounds like it's only really useful if the laptop is closed.

Weaning off laptop

Weaning off laptop 06/19/2004 06:10 AM

I have been using laptops primarily for the past few years and now I am planning to return to desktops.  Why?  Because laptops are difficult to upgrade and I am tired of paying too much to replace broken parts or batteries dying over time.  The control key on my current laptop, a Dell Inspiron 8000, is sticky and I can't fix it without sending my laptop off.  Fans (yup, it has two) and hard drives turning on and off is annoying too.

I have been eyeing the 17-inch PowerBook but Windows is my primary target environment so I can't just replace my laptop with the PowerBook.  So I am going to get a desktop, not the most powerful one available, but one that hits the Sweet Spot.  I think that means 3.2 GHz Pentium 4.  So far I am looking at Dell Dimension 8300 with 2 gig of memory, 400G disk.  Since I am addicted to 1600x1200 resolution and LCD (read ClearType), I'll have to get one of those 20-inch LCD and match that with Radeon 9800 GPU.  Even with fastest optical drives (CD/DVD-RW), total cost is around $2400 which is pretty good deal I think.

Only problem is that the price keeps dropping.  Longer I hold off on getting it, the cheaper it gets.  It's amazing that with such a strong incentive not to press the submit button, the computer industry still humms along.  How crazy is that?

After I finish making the transition to the desktop, maybe I'll get the PowerBook (why the heck does it support only 1440x900?) with the excuse that I'll be writing some OS X software.  At least that's the line I am going to use on my wife.  OS X software market is going to explode, honey!

It's a tear-jerker for those of us who lived through this era, seeing old friends like the Compaq luggable (mine had more wonky than usual floppy drives) and catching a glimpse of a few I'd not known about.

It also inspired me to keep on with my current tinkering project goal (which let me tell you, is way beyond my limited abilities): getting an Epson HX-20 laptop online via serial cable -> IR -> cellphone. Of course, I've got to buy a working HX-20 first, and every time I mention it on here, you bastards go out and outbid me on all the eBay sales. Stop that.

The Walmart Laptop

The Walmart Laptop 08/17/2004 09:00 PM

Just in time for back-to-school shopping, Walmart puts out an ultra-cheap laptop for under $600. It's an ECS A535, and comes with an Athlon 1.6GHz processor, 14" screen, wireless networking, and XP Home Edition.

As expected, Walmart continues its push of cheap imports with little regard for anything but its own bottom line.

I guess it's good for the US economy in one respect; cheap hardware like this will undoubtedly keep support guys plenty busy. And at that price you might as well buy two; one for a backup or for spare parts.

Ideal laptop configuration?

Ideal laptop configuration? 02/14/2004 04:03 PM

After four years and a few drops my 500 MHz IBM Thinkpad seems ready for retirement.  This posting and associated comments are intended to produce a collaborative ideal configuration for a new laptop.

The mission:  Use exclusively when traveling, often for weeks at a time.  I would like to play music in my hotel rooms, ideally from built-in speakers but possibly from little portable speakers that are packed separately (I have a weird little AAA-powered Creative speaker system now that is sort of okay for background music).  I would like to copy large high-res photos from professional digital cameras, usually by pulling a CF or SD card from the camera and plugging it somehow into the flash card.  I want every possible means of connecting to the Internet, wired and wireless, except for telephone (don't have an ISP and life is too short for dialup).  Battery life is not very important as I'll usually be using the machine some place where power is available.

Here's what I think I want

  • 120 GB (or larger) disk drive.  I upgraded my current laptop with a 48 GB drive nearly 2 years ago and am dismayed to discover that the largest 2.5" drives available right now are 80 GB.  Was Moore's Law revoked for notebook drives?  Anyone with inside knowledge know when/what the next step in disk drives will be fore notebooks?  I don't want to bother re-installing all my old software onto a disk smaller than 120 GB.
  • TrackPoint nubby pointing device in the middle of the keyboard, as popularized on the IBM Thinkpad.  I was never able to adapt to those pad devices that are most common for laptops.
  • analog video/audio output to enable playback of DVDs on hotel room TVs, some of which have A/V inputs
  • reasonably high quality built-in speakers
  • as many USB 2.0 ports as possible (at least two because I'll want to use an accessory mouse that will chew up one)
  • a built-in Webcam and microphone suitable for video conferencing.  Supposedly MSN Messenger contains a reasonable quality video conferencing feature.  Would also be nice to be able to make phone calls from the laptop in cases where a hotel provides high-speed Internet but expensive voice calls and/or the cell phone isn't working in that area.
  • built-in sockets for CF, SD, and other digital camera memory cards
  • built-in 802.11b for sure, Bluetooth?, maybe something for mobile phone Internet would be nice, e.g., a GSM radio
  • at least two PC card slots for expansion and the weird little card burner that I must use to keep my airplane's GPS databases up to date
  • mid-size screen and keyboard to keep the weight below 5 lbs. and the size compact
  • Windows XP operating system (am currently using XP on desktop and Solaris for philip.greenspun.com; don't want to learn anything new)

It might be fun to play with the TabletPC software in order to add sketches and other personal annotations to emails, documents, photos, etc.  Is this software ready for prime time?  And does having a TabletPC interfere with the other goals?

Ideas anyone?

Matias Adds Sudden Motion Sensor Tech to
Laptop Bags
04/01/2005 03:21 AM
Jeff Carlson (~270 words)

Matias Adds Sudden Motion Sensor Tech to Laptop Bags -- Laptop bag designer Edgar Matias announced today that his company has licensed Apple's Sudden Motion Sensor technology for use in a new line of bags for PowerBook and iBook portable computers. First announced in the 31-Jan-05 revision of Apple's PowerBook G4 line, Sudden Motion Sensor technology automatically detects changes in axis position and accelerated motion, then instantly parks the heads of your hard drive to reduce the chance of data loss. The new models in Matias's Laptop Armor/Inflatable line of bags includes a similar sensor chip. When the sensor detects that the wearer is toppling (backward, forward, or to either side) due to the weight of the bag's contents, self-inflating balloons deploy around the bag to add further protection to the laptop and the person; balloons in the forward-facing backpack straps provide protection in the event of a forward topple. A vital catalyst to speed the inflation of the balloons is a secret ingredient derived from domesticated foliage grown widely in British Columbia, Canada. The company refused to elaborate further. Once deployed, the bag must be returned Matias so that the bags can be refolded and the internal air canisters replaced. For an extra $50 up-front fee, Matias will perform this service up to five times. People with exaggerated balance issues can also opt to purchase a $35 self-refill kit that includes the replacement canisters and detailed folding instructions. The Laptop Armor/Inflatable bags, ranging in size to accommodate all Apple laptop sizes, are available as of 01-Apr-05 for $200. [JLC]

DealBITS Drawing: Matias OS X Keyboard 06/17/2005 05:46 PM
Adam C. Engst (~410 words)

A little over a year ago, I reviewed the Matias Tactile Pro keyboard, which uses Alps mechanical switches to provide a "clicky" feel that many people, myself included, really like. Now Matias has a new keyboard - the OS X Keyboard - that addresses two common complaints with the Tactile Pro. First, the Tactile Pro is relatively expensive at $99.95, whereas the OS X Keyboard costs only $29.95. Second, the Tactile Pro is rather loud thanks to those clicky keys, and some people (or their office-mates) find the noise annoying. In contrast, the OS X Keyboard, short of occasional clicks from its Spacebar, is far quieter. The OS X Keyboard also hides the seldom-used Caps Lock key down in the cluster of modifier keys to the right of the Spacebar (replacing it with a Control key above Shift), prints the appropriate symbols on the modifier keys in addition to the Option characters on all alphanumeric keys, and arranges the three volume keys (mute, up, down) in a line between the Help/Home/Pg Up row and F13/F14/F15. But (there's always a "but," isn't there?), the OS X Keyboard uses rubber dome switches instead of Alps mechanical switches, and as such, doesn't have nearly as nice a feel as the Tactile Pro. It's comparable to the Apple Pro Keyboard, other than a somewhat looser Spacebar. In terms of construction, it's white plastic, and is quite light; it doesn't have the tank-like feel of the Tactile Pro. Overall, the OS X Keyboard hasn't rocked my world, but it seems to be a decent, inexpensive keyboard that might be a good choice for anyone buying a Mac mini or looking for a backup or replacement keyboard.

Army Tests Add-On Body Armor 07/27/2004 01:12 PM

gauntlet2.jpg imageI was a little surprised to learn that the standard issue G.I body armor isn't really designed to stop the sort of attacks our soldiers are suffering in modern-day battle. It makes sense, I suppose, since vests designed to stop bullets doesn't do much to deflect "superheated ... tiny liquid balls of metal that melt the skin, muscle and tendons right off." Fortunately, Sandia National Labs and the Army are testing out new body armor add-ons (sort of like aftermarket ground effects, minus the neon lights) that are designed to protect exposed soldiers' extremities against rocket-propelled grenades and roadside bombs.

DefenseTech has a full story on the armor peripherals, including a lovely anecdote about a dead pig's leg encased in an armored gauntlet, then placed two-and-a-half feet away from an exploding anti-tank shell. Now that's good eatin'.
