Getting in touch with your inner jackass
Getting in touch with your inner jackass
12/19/2004 03:30 PM
Before I had kids, I never got really angry. I did't yell and I didn't
get into knock down, drag out arguments with anybody. But, as every
parent knows, kids can make you crazy and kids can make you angry.
I've got good control over my temper and I think I'm a pretty mild
mannered guy, but with three young sons, I've got plenty of
opportunities to yell, and to say things I never thought I would ever,
ever say. I get angry now (and, of course, that is not entirely bad).
I've got a theory about why kids can make parents so angry. They don't
realize it, but kids emulate their parent's verbal and physical
mannerisms all the time. As you watch your child you can see bits and
pieces of your own personality. They pick up on the little phrases
that you repeat. They repeat them too. When your kid starts to fuss or
throw a tantrum or otherwise behave like a jackass, he does it in a
way that reminds you of yourself, your mannerisms, and your
personality. You see your own inner jackass reflected in the actions
of your child. Your kid learned how to be a jackass directly from you,
it shows, and boy oh boy does that piss you off.
I've only raised kids up to the age of seven, so I don't know the full
range of anger that a child can induce yet, but I think I'm onto
something here.

This is something. Else. I don't think I'll need any other
music for the entire summer. It has been playing on repeat for about
an hour now, and "I'm looking for some fun/deep in the
night"...
It makes me wonder though whether I should grow a moustache and a
mullet? I'll need to do some barberblogging next week anyway ;-)

Do Not Touch That Mouse
Do Not Touch That Mouse
12/30/2004 04:39 PMWe've all seen examples of how various companies are attaching more
and more ridiculous "warnings" to products thanks to ever-present
product liability suits because someone didn't realize things like
that they shouldn't submerge their toaster in the bathtub they were in
at the time. While many of these are simply funny examples of "who
would ever actually
do that?" some new laws are creating some
absolutely bizarre warning labels. Take, for example, warning labels
that are showing up on certain computer mice in the state of
California. Thanks to regulations, some mice have warnings saying you
should
wash your
hands after handling them. The warning is specifically referring
to the cord, and the fact that it has a tiny bit of lead in it, but as
the article points out, unless the cord is broken up, you'd probably
have to
eat a fair amount of your mouse cord before you'd have
a problem from lead poisoning. Still, apparently, some users are
returning the mice, fearing for their safety.

How to stay in touch - even when you're
dead
02/05/2005 09:26 PMOK, this qualifies as the stupidest thing that I have ever heard of
for sure. Apparently, someone actually ‘invented’ a mobile
phone that supposedly allows you to ‘keep in touch’ with
loved ones after they have passed on. As the article at The Register
points out, this conversation you would be having is likely to be a
bit one sided. Still, there are those out there that will likely fall
for a gimmick like this…

Mark Levison, one of the developers I interviewed for the .NET story,
thinks that Microsoft has undersold the benefits of No-Touch
Deployment (NTD), the current solution for running rich .NET clients
from the Web. Having done the gruntwork required to understand and use
NTD, Mark's not so sure that developers ought to write off this
technology and wait for Whidbey's ClickOnce.

02/19/2004 02:55 AMIn an effort to protect its intellectual property, Microsoft is

appeared online last week.
Microsoft is sending warnings to users who search for its source code
on peer-to-peer file-swapping services and is mailing legal warnings
to those who have already downloaded the secret programming code, says
Tom Pilla, a Microsoft spokesperson. The company has acknowledged the
code, spreading on the Internet without its authorization, is genuine

I was going to blog from Reeperbahn (I find it slightly worrying that
T9 actually recognizes that word) but instead exhaustion got the
better of me, so I'm in the hotel, ready for bed.
But idly I wonder about why my name seems so feminine to many
non-Finns. The hotel tv greets me as "Mrs Jalkanen", and
someone has placed a women's magazine on the table for my convenient
perusal.
Well, no big harm done :). If some computer out there thinks I'm a
woman, let it be. Computers need their fun, too.
Update: I need to check my handwriting. The hotel bill this
morning was addressed to
