Intel's High Hopes for WiMAX

Intel's High Hopes for WiMAX 01/22/2004 02:02 PM
During a speech at the Wireless Communications Association conference this week, Intel predicted that the next 10 years would be defined by broadband wireless: Intel has become a big supporter of WiMAX, hoping to see Wi-Fi and WiMAX bundled into computers. Some of the challenges facing WiMAX mentioned in this New York Times article aren't quite on track. For example, the piece says that the spectrum needed to deploy WiMAX isn't yet available. In fact the MMDS license holders could deploy WiMAX. Those licenses are owned by Nextel, Bellsouth, and others. But John Markoff notes that the lower band frequencies are more ideal because radio signals travel further lower down on the spectrum. Those bands are very crowded and not much is available for hopeful operators. This is the argument the 802.20 standard developers are making. That standard is designed for very small swaths of spectrum in the lower bands to accommodate for the fact that only little bits of spectrum on the lower end are available. Markoff also challenged an Intel exec on past failures to make a market for fixed broadband wireless services, likely referring to the failure of the MMDS market in the mid-1990s and others like Metricom. The developers of 802.16, however, clearly had in mind the problems that faced those initiatives. For example, the second version of 802.16 will eliminate the need for an outdoor antenna at the customer premise. Installing such antennas is an expensive proposition and that expense is said to have contributed to the downfall of the MMDS initiatives in the mid-1990s. So far AT&T and Covad have joined the WiMAX Forum but no operator has said it plans to deploy the technology....

Intel Has High Hopes for the Future

Intel Has High Hopes for the Future 11/12/2003 01:11 PM
Intel's Sean Maloney, general manager of Intels Communications Group, offered a glimpse at what Intel sees for the future of wireless: While all of Intel's Wi-Fi chips so far have gone into computers, Maloney thinks in the future they will live in a wide array of electronics devices in the home. He admits that Intel was late to wireless and comments that the company has caught up. I certainly wouldn't agree with that given Intel doesn't even have an 802.11g chip out yet. Maloney offers the perfect example of how Intel may be torn about using the hype machine. He notes that Wi-Fi has been overhyped, which is certainly due in part to Intel's Centrino campaign, but says that on the other hand, broadband wireless is going to change everything. Maybe Intel has really high hopes for Wi-Fi but is partly afraid that the market may not lead to a genuine boom....

Annan has High Hopes for Wireless
Worldwide
11/14/2003 01:48 PM
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said wireless technologies can help developing nations leapfrog more expensive telecom technologies and empower people: It's nice to see wireless getting such big time attention. I couldn't agree more that wireless can be a low cost way of connecting poorer communities. I've written about an Indian tribe in the Northwest U.S. that's using wireless to connect the reservation to the Internet as a means of bringing jobs to tribal members and preserving its culture. We've all read about other examples of such communities benefiting from wireless. Unfortunately, funding that might help rural communities in the United States build wireless networks is currently at risk. The Wireless Communications Association in tandem with a slew of other rural and technology organizations have been working hard to convince the House to retain an increase in funding for rural broadband development that the Senate included in its budget....

NASA Fired Will Carpenter for writing a short story. "Some kind of harrassment," they said, and since Texas is an at-will employment state, there's not much he can do about it. Is this story a valid means of self-expression or a harrassing glimpse into jilted anger? I've stumbled across more and more news stories about people being fired for writing, and students expelled for writing "dark poetry" in the classroom. How much do you have to keep secret from your classmates and co-workers?

From KISS to KIDS

From KISS to KIDS 06/23/2004 05:59 AM
From KISS to KIDS – An ‘anti-simplistic’ Modelling Approach
http://bruce .edmonds.name/kiss2kids/kiss2kids.html

Abstract
A new approach is suggested under the slogan “Keep it Descriptive Stupid” (KIDS) that encapsulates a trend in increasingly descriptive agent-based social simulation. The KIDS approach entails one starts with the simulation model that relates to the target phenomena in the most straight-forward way possible, taking into account the widest possible range of evidence, including anecdotal accounts and expert opinion. Simplification is only applied when and if the model and evidence justify this. This contrasts sharply with the KISS approach where one starts with the simplest possible model and only moves to a more complex one if forced to. An example multi-agent simulation of domestic water demand and social influence is described.

Kiss mahhh grits, Mel!

Kiss mahhh grits, Mel! 01/06/2005 07:27 PM
As I'm sure you all know, today would've been the 74th birthday of actor Vic Tayback, best known as everybody's favorite hairy, sweaty, ill-tempered (yet almost cuddly) diner chef on that wacky piece of 70's tv Americana Alice (Remember when Mel called Vera "dingy"? Sitcom gold!). Kept busy for years as a character actor with constant tv guest spots on everything from "I Dream of Jeannie" to "Gunsmoke," Vic embraced job security when given an opportunity to expand one character in particular, Mel Sharples from Martin Scorcese's drama "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" (starring Ellen Burstyn [she won an Oscar], Kris Kristofferson, Diane Ladd, Harvey Keitel and Jodie Foster). Thanks to Vic, the character of Mel smoothly adapted from his dramatic origins into his new home of sit-com hi-larity... one of the rare attempts of that kind to succeed.

RIP
Vic. Oh, and kiss my grits.
