MMS Scandal Leads To Complete Over
Reaction By Government

MMS Scandal Leads To Complete Over
Reaction By Government
02/01/2005 09:43 PM
Back in November, we first wrote about the growing "scandal" in India where two students recorded a sexually explicit video with a cameraphone and it got sent around via MMS. At the time, we noted that the school in question had responded by banning all mobile phones at the school, which seemed a bit extreme. Why punish everyone for something a few students did -- and which was unlikely to have been done at the school in the first place? However, that scandal took on a life of its own, even leading to the arrest of the head of eBay's Indian subsidiary because someone tried to sell the MMS video on that site. Now, the government in New Delhi has taken the ban on mobile phones to an even more ridiculous extreme, and has banned all mobile phones from all public schools, while urging other schools to do the same. Again, it's hard to see how this is anything but an over reaction to the issue. It wasn't the phones that created the problem, but the students who misused the phones. Why should everyone else get punished for that? At the same time, is this really likely to stop similar things from happening again?

Mac leads Linux, but for how long?

Mac leads Linux, but for how long? 08/13/2004 11:20 PM
Wired News seeks to ;quell reports from IDC that the Mac OS has already been overtaken by Linux. According to reports, most analysts are skeptical of Linux"s actual real-world dominance, despite sales numbers. While Linux machines are shipping in ever greater numbers, especially to giant markets like China, the vast majority are stripped of Linux in favor of pirate copies of Windows, experts say. However, with an increasing number of mainstream companies adopting Linux in their low-end machines, it remains to be seen whether the Mac can hold on to its seemingly tenacious grip on the second spot. "We expect to see Linux overtake Mac on the desktop this year," said Jeffrey Wade, HP"s Linux marketing communications manager. Wade said HP already sells 100,000 Linux desktops per quarter. (That"s between 30,000 and 40,000 Linux computers, not servers, per month.)

U.S. leads top spamming countries

U.S. leads top spamming countries 12/28/2004 11:39 AM
Security software company Sophos has published its latest report on leading spamming countries and found that 42 percent of all spam sent in 2004 came from the United States. Other countries topping the list are South Korea and China, with the two countries producing over 21 percent of the total global spam. "Many of the computers sending out spam are most likely to have had their broadband internet connections exploited by remote hackers," Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos said. "Zombie computers--PCs that have been compromised by hackers or virus writers--are sending out over 40 percent of the world's spam, and many users who fall victim are unaware."
