Like the Aerielink Wireless Flash Combo we linked to a few weeks ago,
there's another second 802.11b wireless USB adapter for PCs that comes
with 128MB of Flash memory storage built-in (we'll admit to having a
soft spot these sorts of combo gadgets). The GN-WLBZ201 from Gigabyte
also comes in a Flash memory-less version, though that's considerably
less fun. Read...

extra to have the extra memory?
Virgin intros half-ounce 128MB MP3 player07/19/2004 04:28 PM Virgin Electronics announced on Monday the release of a diminutive,
silver dollar-sized MP3 player that
holds 128MB of music. The US$99.99 device is just under two inches
in diameter and slightly less than half an inch deep; including its
rechargeable battery, it weighs right around half an ounce. It
connects to your Mac via an included USB 1.1 cable that recharges the
battery, and it also comes with an armband, a pair of earphones and a
neck chain. Virgin notes that it also doubles as a file storage device
and warns that it can't play music downloaded from the iTunes Music

Free open WiFi on Tacoma-Washington train, courtesy WiFi hacker03/24/2005 08:15 PM Cory Doctorow:
A Seattle wireless hacker rides a commuter train from Tacoma every day
with a battery-powered WiFi hotspot in his backpack that's linked up
to the Internet with a 14.4 144k wireless modem. Catch his
train and get free WiFi on your commute.
The open wireless node can be found in the first car of the last
morning train and in Car 403 on the 5:10pm return trip. Use SSID
"FreeInternetAccess" or "seattlewireless" to connect - You may have to
assign yourself an IP in the range 192.168.0.0/24 and use the Default
Gateway 192.168.0.1 as the DHCP is sometimes flakey
For now, you can file the 'Blackberry Thumb' issue
along side the folder where you would have kept your worries about
cellphone radiation, had you not forgotten them since that tumor
pressed too firmly into your hippocampus. Sure, dinking around on
thumbboards probably isn't exactly the optimal use of your opposable
digits, but it's likely no worse than the dreaded "Nintendo Thumb"
that struck down a whole generation of good typists, who now are
cursed with occasional involuntary run-ons of 'ABABSELECTSTART.' Until
this doctor in the UK can actually point to a documented case of
someone suffering from tendentious, I think I'll keep promoting the
thumbboard as one of the best mobile input devices we have
ABABSELECTSTART available. (Thanks, Aaron!)

Thumb Drives That Purrrrr07/06/2004 01:55 AM It is not that surprising to see Thumb Drives made into everything
from animals to jewelery these days. However, one Taiwanese firm took
it to a new level of weird with the 256MB Cat Bar. While at first you
might be expecting a feline version of Cheers, in actuality it is a
thumb drive for cat lovers. To top it all off, it meows when you plug
it in! Now if I could get one that looks like Bender the robot from
Futurama… ;o)
Replacing The Mouse With Thumb Control04/20/2004 02:00 PM
MIT's Tech Review has a short article about a new type of mouse replacement that sounds like a fairly
intelligent input device that takes out much of the carpal tunnel risk
by recognizing that simple thumb movements can easily designate where
you want the cursor to move. So, the device is basically a
one-handed, baseless joystick with a flat top where simple thumb
movement designate where to move on the screen without much exertion
or muscle strain. The side of the device contains typical mouse
buttons. Combined with the Twiddler
one-handed keyboard, and you could have quite the ergonomic solution
to computer input, while also allowing for mobility with wearable type
computers. Of course, as with any such devices, if the learning curve
seems to be too much, it will never catch on. That may be the case
with the one-handed keyboard, but the mouse replacement might not be
such a big stretch.

Microsoft's New Smart Phone Interface: Your Thumb04/07/2005 05:24 PM Microsoft Research scientists, in cooperation with University of
Maryland researchers, have designed two interfaces to support easier
use of PDAs and cellphones.
The interfaces allow users to operate the devices using a thumb on one
hand. The interfaces target screens from 2 to 5 inches, measured
diagonally, with resolutions ranging from 176 x 220 to 800 x 600
pixels.
Review: WiFi Seeker / WiFi Spy07/16/2004 04:50 PM A few weeks ago I got Chrisalis Developemnt's WiFi Seeker, a convenient
keychain-sized wireless network locator. Marware's recently announced
WiFi Spy is a
rebranded version of the same device, so it should perform
identically.
To locate a wireless network simply press the button and watch the
LEDs. When the lights stop sweeping back and forth, the number that
remain lit will show the strength of the wireless signal. If the
lights continue to sweep back and forth, you're not in range for any
wireless network. Unlike other devices, the WiFi Seeker isn't fooled
by other 2.5 GHz signals like microwave ovens or cordless phones, and
it doesn't depend on 802.11 client activity to detect the access
point. It detects both 802.11b and 802.11g.

P900 successor with a tiny, frustrating thumb-keyboard05/04/2004 09:19 AM
Apparently, this is a leaked pic of the successor to the Sony Ericsson
P900 (the phone I plan on getting as soon as my first bank-statement
appears and I use it to authenticate myself to the dumbass phone
company that thinks bank-statements are better ID than Canadian
passports). Call it the P901, or the P1000, whatever: it's got a wee
keyboard on the flip-down for those who prefer thumbing out their
executive haiku to scratching at a recalcitrant
handwriting-recognition system. It looks like it might be a photoshop
job, but Rojas at Engadget says that MobileBurn, the source, is
reliable, and I'll take his word for it.

The Vosonic X'S-Drive Pro VP 300 is 40GB external
hard drive that is clunky, cheap-looking, has a crappy text-only
integrated screen, plays MP3s, but not WMA, AAC, or OGG Vorbis, and
can only read from one card from its card reader at a time. So why
would any photographer want it? Because it's cheap, it does the
primary job it was designed to do (act as remote backup for memory
cards), and can accept as many additional 2.5-inch laptop hard drives
as you want to swap into it, meaning that all other things aside, you
can purchase this single $335 drive and continue to upgrade it for
only the price of additional hard drives. Read -

Seagate Tries to Block Import of Cornice Hard Drive Devices
Last week, both
Seagate and Western Digital sued hard drive newcomer Cornice in
separate patent-infringement lawsuits. So besides that welcome wagon,
Seagate has now asked the US International Trade Commission to ban the
importation of any device that uses one of Cornice's 1-inch hard
drives, which brings me to why you care. If the USITC goes for it, MP3
players from Aiwa, iRiver, Element, Agere, Rio, and RCA -- and that's
just the short list -- could be illegal to import under the
injunction. That takes the lawsuit from boring, insider sniping to
slightly-less-boring and irritating, and well, I thought you should
know.
Also, it must be frustrating for a new company, without years of
links to cloud the Google waters, to return as the search results of
its name two links to its website and a third to a news story about a
lawsuit against them.
