/>It may not be as "official" as the 3D flat panel
announced by Sharp on the 10th of this month, but IO Data's "Play3D"
LCD filter is much cheaper - about $467 USD compared to the Sharp
display's $1500 USD price tag.
Seeing as how this is only a filter, you have to wear those goofy
glasses, and it's only supposed to work with a certain LCD monitor of
IO Data's, I'd say wait for something better to come down the pipe.
Still, products such as this being introduced are a good sign that the
market may turn to 3D displays, something the adult entertainment
industry has been lobbying for years.

A sleepy DISH Network receiver
A sleepy DISH Network receiver
02/01/2005 09:15 PMNow that I'm living in the wilds of New Hampshire, I've been required
to turn to satellite for my television reception requirements. My
housemates and I ordered the DISH Network and opted for the DISH
player with DVR (receiver model 522). After only a few days, we
decided that the DVR feature wasn't as user-friendly as TiVo and I
purchased a new TiVo. Soon we discovered that more often than not,
when we went to watch a taped program, all that TiVo had recorded was
a floating DISH Network logo. It appeared that the DISH receiver had
(unbeknownst to TiVo) turned off.
I called DISH to report the problem with the receiver, only to find
out that the DISH receiver is programmed to go into "sleep mode" after
four hours of inactivity. Which means that every night it turns off
(and most times it does so during the day as well), making it nearly
impossible for TiVo to tape anything. The DISH representative
suggested I program the DISH DVR to record the same event as TiVo,
thereby guaranteeing that the receiver would be active when TiVo began
to record, but that seems like a ridiculous solution to a problem that
shouldn't exist.
(Never mind the fact that with TiVo season passes and wish lists, you
don't even know when something you want will be broadcast unless you
are constantly checking your "To-Do" list. I pointed out how time
consuming it would be to have to do this double-step for each and
every show one wanted to tape, but he claimed once I learned how to do
it, it would take me only a minute or two at most per program.)
I asked the DISH support person if there were someway to turn off the
sleep mode, or lengthen the amount of time before the sleep mode
became active, but he said that wasn't possible. According to him, the
receiver, "is complicated and needs downtime for updates and
maintenance." Also according to the support person, I'm the only
person who's reported this problem and found the "solution" to
double-record unsatisfactory. "DISH Networks has over 10 million
satisfied customers," according the support rep. My 1 in 10 million
"luck" makes me think I should enter the lottery more often.
So my question for you is: Do you have a DISH receiver? And if so,
have you experienced this problem? Do you know of any way to hack the
DISH receiver so it doesn't go into a standby or sleep mode? And do
DirecTV receivers do this? Because if they don't, I'm very willing to
change my service. Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions you
may have.

Dream is a software implementation of a Digital
Radio Mondiale (DRM) receiver. All you need to
receive DRM transmissions is a PC with a sound
card and a modified analog short-wave (MW, LW)
receiver.
Changes:
Many changes have taken place in the AM demodulation with a separate
main window for AM, noise reduction, PLL and CW demodulation, and a
changed AM bandpass filter. A SNR spectrum plot has been implemented
in DRM mode, which provides information used to improve reception
under interference situations. History plots were added for SNR/Audio,
Delay/Doppler, and Frequency/Sample Rate.

Whither The Belkin PureAV Wireless
Digital Audio Receiver?
07/13/2004 09:01 AM
The Belkin PureAV Wireless
Digital Audio Receiver sounded like a pretty decent product when PCMag
ran their little blurb. A simple and cheap ($130) 802.11b receiver
that could be dropped on any wireless network, slurp up your MP3s and
other audio, and pump out sound to your stereo. You could even listen
to internet radio without having any PCs on. So, uhm, where is it?
There's nothing on Belkin's website about it, and PCMag hasn't given
us anything else. (Thanks, Chris.)

Motorola MPx200 Review
Motorola MPx200 Review
12/29/2003 11:59 PMAfter more than six months of being unhappy with my mobile phone
and service, I’ve finally replaced it. Last Monday when phone
number portability went into effect I ordered a Motorola MPx200 Smartphone from
Amazon.
I’d been looking at the Motorola for a few weeks and I liked
the features. The phone runs the Windows Smartphone OS, basically a modified version of Windows CE. It comes with a desktop cradle that you can
use to charge your phone through your computer’s USB port as well as sync your contacts, calendar,
tasks, and notes with Outlook.
The retail price of the phone is about $300 with service
activation. AT&T has a $50 rebate when
you activate the phone, and Amazon has the phone for $250 and offers a
$120 mail in rebate, bringing the price of the phone to $80.
Buying through Amazon was a bit of a hassle. Even though I
purchased activation and gave them all my information, the phone
arrived without any account information and upon calling AT&T I discovered that they had no record of
an account for me. After two attempts at activating over the phone
with AT&T I discovered that in order to
port my phone number from my previous carrier, they were going to have
to give me a new SIM. Rather than wait for
one to be mailed to me, I made a trip to a local AT&T store and went through the process of
activating the phone for the fourth time. The manager of the AT&T store was pleasant enough and gave me a
$30 car charger to make up for the problems I’d had getting
service started.
The porting process was simple and painless. I gave AT&T the account information from my previous
carrier and my phone number was moved over and my previous account
canceled automatically. I started the porting process at about 3pm the
day before Thanksgiving and at 2pm Saturday the process was complete.
In the meantime, I could make calls from the new phone, but incoming
calls rang to the old phone.
There are a few things that could be done better on the Smartphone
OS side. The Outlook integration only
synchronizes your primary contacts, calendar, tasks, and inbox. If you
want to sync a different calendar folder, you’re out of luck. If
you use Outlook as an IMAP client, your
email isn’t stored in the default Inbox, so the Smartphone
doesn’t sync it. I’d imagine that someone will create a
third-party sync conduit that supports this. Suggestions for alternate
sync products or phone email clients are welcome.
The other thing that I find irritating is that there is no way to
exit most programs on the phone. If I fire up the calendar, it keeps
running until I turn off the phone or open the task manager and kill
the process. The calendar (and most other apps) has no Quit or Exit
command that I can find. Any suggestions on that would be helpful as
well.
There are a couple of small things that are easily improved. For
instance, the included earpiece and in-ear headphones (for the
built-in MP3 player) are poorly designed.
They don’t fit the ear very well. But you can easily buy an
aftermarket set that works better. Someone even has instructions for
converting a pair of nice Koss earphones for use as a headset. The
earphone/headset jack has a little plastic cover over it that makes it
a pain to quickly plug in a headset, but that’s easily fixed by
a quick snip with a pair of wire cutters.
The next version of the phone is rumored to have a built in camera,
be smaller and lighter, and have Bluetooth. It should come out
sometime next spring.
