But Think Of The Children... Gambling!

But Think Of The Children... Gambling! 07/27/2004 12:37 PM
It's good that there's a group watching out for issues concerning children and technology, but it would be nice, for once, if they could stop with their fear-mongering misleading announcements. Children's charity NCH in the UK, which is good at getting publicity for their causes, never seems to get questioned at all by the press. This is the group that put out a ridiculously misleading story blaming the internet for child porn and then produced a very carefully worded study to misleadingly suggest that 3G phones were a threat to children. Their latest piece of artwork is a report sug gesting that 11-year-olds are gambling online in the UK, but which gives no evidence to support that at all. What they did was convince one 16-year-old girl to sign up for a variety of gambling sites with a debit card and to lie about her age. She apparently got into many of them. From this, they point out that many banks will give out debit cards to people as young as 11, and thus, 11-year-olds can now gamble online. Of course, beyond convincing an underage girl to lie, the group also gives everyone the full list of online casinos where (apparently) 11-year-olds can gamble. Now, they're completely right that these sites need better age verification measures. However, stories about 11-year-olds gambling online should have a little more factual basis than a 16-year-old told to lie.

Mobile Gambling Unlikely To Be In The US
Any Time Soon

Mobile Gambling Unlikely To Be In The US
Any Time Soon
04/27/2004 12:59 PM
While folks over in Europe have been pushing forward with mobile gambling, it's unlikely to come to the US any time soon. If gambling from your own computer is already forbidden, it seems unlikely that they would let anyone gamble on the go as well. Of course, the company discussed in the article is trying to initially target casinos, so that people at a casino could keep gambling on their mobile phone even if they're not on the floor. That becomes a slightly trickier situation, because they're in the casino itself already - it's just that the gambling mechanism has gone portable. Where's the boundary? What if a casino handed out a mobile gambling device instead of letting you use your own phone?

Newspaper Calls Gambling What It Is

Newspaper Calls Gambling What It Is 04/24/2004 09:08 PM

Not once in this LA Times story (reg req) about Native American casinos' gambling revenues -- and whether the casinos should pay more to the state -- do you find the word "gaming," I'm happy to note. The gambling industry has tried to sanitize what it does by renaming the activity into something that sounds totally benign. And the media usually plays along. Not this time. A tip of the hat to whoever made that decision.

California, the Gambling State

California, the Gambling State 08/29/2004 10:53 PM

(This is also my Sund ay column in the San Jose Mercury News.) A classic example of audacity is the man who kills his parents and asks for clemency on the grounds that he's an orphan. A few weeks ago, a California gambler who lost a bundle online joined a lawsuit against search engines that sell advertising for Internet gambling sites. The case, filed in state court in San Francisco, is just one example of our society's utterly inconsistent and hypocritical treatment of gambling. We love it, we hate it, we use it, and we are being wounded by it. I would never suggest banning it. Yet I'm puzzled by people who gamble online or offline, because they're usually working against stacked odds. Over time, they're likely to lose. Still, we allow many potentially harmful activities, on the principle that freedom means the freedom to make mistakes. More...

Online Gambling... For A Living

Online Gambling... For A Living 08/09/2004 06:09 AM
While the US continues to ban online gambling (and look for ways to stop anyone who dares to find non-US-based sites to keep on gambling), the UK has decided it's better to just regulate online gambline -- especially as some players seem to be making something of a career out of it. Of course, the online poker player they talk to seems to have made a career out of beating Americans who shouldn't be gambling online anyway: "The best time to play is between 4am and 7am," she explains, "because the Americans are playing - and they're drunk."

PayPal To Fine For Porn, Gambling

PayPal To Fine For Porn, Gambling 09/10/2004 08:40 PM
Billy Budd writes in to point out that PayPal is now going to start fining people $500 if they use PayPal in association with porn, gambling or buying unauthorized prescription drugs over the internet. That's certainly quite a big step beyond just banning those types of transactions. Obviously, they know that plenty of people are still using PayPal for these purposes -- and this is their attempt to scare them off. Seems a bit extreme, of course, and only means that other services are likely to spring up to fill the gap.
