Well most of today was spent on basic webmastering, content writing
and CSS stuff (and I've munged a lot of CSS -- I know it won't
validate any longer). But I just caught my breath and put in a
requested feature: RSS Filtering.
Here's What a Filter Does
If you've used Roogle at all then you're starting to see that your
own posts show up a lot. That's bad (well sometimes) so I
implemented a new Advanced tab which has the advanced search form with the Filter option.
Let's just say that you don't like my blog. Then you'd enter
http://radio.weblogs.c
om/0103807/rss.xml in the filter field and do the
search. And this is what you'd get:

Can there be more than one filter? Not right now.
Does it remember my filter? Not yet.
Can I filter from the search results? Good idea (I just
thought of it). I'll get on that.
Who thought up this in the 1st place? Well the filter concept

If you read the Java blogs, you've probably seen Bill Venners'
excellent How to
interview a
Programmer article by now. If not, check it out. My favorite quote
is below:

hate anything that asks me to design on the spot. That's asking to
demonstrate a skill rarely required on the job in a high-stress
environment, where it is difficult for a candidate to accurately prove
their abilities. I think it's fundamentally an unfair thing to request
of a candidate.
This one is a close second:

ask candidates to create an object model of a chicken.
I mean, how can you argue with Scott Meyers and how can you object
to a chicken?
Speaking of arguing with Scott Meyers... I worked at one of those
phone company research labs back in the 90's and we had enough money
to bring in Scott Meyers to teach us all about C++. Scott was
explaining how you can overload operators and you can even overload
the equals sign, when one student raised his hand. The student
explained that there were some situations in telecommunications
systems where A was equal to B, but B was not equal to A. Scott
immediately objected, of course, but the student went off into some
jargon-filled explanation of his particular problem domain. Scott let
the student finish and then said, "if you were to overload the equals
operator so that A was equal to B, but B was not equal to A, then
I
would want to kill you." That was the end of the argument.

I've never seen anyone make this analogy for blogging yet so I'll give
it a go:
Are Blogs Nothing More than Agents for the Internet?
A few years back, circa 1995 or so, the term "agent" or "intelligent
agent" was all the wave. We were all going to have different agents
that knew our tastes and collected content on our behalf, alerting us
to interesting things. Needless to say that despite tens of millions
of dollars in venture funding and even manufacturing dollars (anyone
remember General Magic and Sony's Magic Cap) that failed utterly.
Now we have blogs and it actually feels strikingly similar. Think
about my blog for example. Right now if you read it then you are
getting an agent that covers:
Technology
Blogging
Open Source
PHP
Marketing
Microsoft
...
If you read Mark Pilgrim's blog then you are getting coverage of:
CSS
XHTML
Browser Issues
...
And if you read Inluminent you are getting:
Online Marketing
Mac / OS X
Pretty Girls
So if you read 10 or 20 different blogs regularly then you are
actually getting the results of 10 or 20 different agents that are
busily scouring the net for you. And, even better, those agents are
sometimes even creating content for you. Now that makes them
intelligent agents indeed.

I've had a flurry of requests recently asking why Feedster doesn't
have a Technorati like
"Cosmos". So over the past few days, with the assistance of Mike
from down under who tossed in a critical string parser, I've been
implementing this. And we're calling it your "Feedster
Web". We looked at the whole Nebula / Galaxy /
Constellation / etc but Richard
Soderberg came up with "Web" and that one stuck. Now while
the final code may not be ready until after Gnomedex (there's one bug
that makes some domains non-"webbable"), I thought I'd at least give
you a preview so you can tell me if we're on track.

Seems like Scott Fallin
really likes UNIX, thinks he's God and writes software that all of us
care about (not sure what that is.)
Here's his 'opinion' of me (my reply follows):
The Obtuse Nature of GUI Fanatics
I find esr’s post about the difficulty of configuring CUPS
(Common UNIX Printer System) to be very amusing. While I’m not
CUPS guru, I have set it up a time or two and found it to be simple
and straightforward. It can be configured via a web browser, after
all. UNIX and its ilk is about tinkering, experimenting and getting
things done in a powerful way. If people want software handed to them,
they know where to go. Redmond and Cupertino make decent enough UIs.
The luser can be spared the foray into the bowels operating system
itself, should that be their wish. In his post, esr has a fictional
Aunt Tillie “getting the idea that this software was written by
geeks without clue.” No, esr. The software was written by geeks
who don’t give a damn about Aunt Tillie and her need to print and
you know that. These geeks have a significant clue. It is simply not
the clue you wish them to have. I respect your abilities as a
programmer. Fetchmail has made my life easier for years. But you are
wrong. Microsoft is still in business because of trade alliances it
has formed with consumers, hardware vendors and resellers. It is still
in business because it has the lion’s share of the market and
that market’s data is stored in proprietary formats. Bringing
Linux to Aunt Tillie’s desktop and making it easy on her will not
slay this Goliath. You of all people should know this. In all
likelihood, Aunt Tillie would be happy with WebTV. Let her have
it.
Marching further into the opinionated front, we find Marc Canter,
would be impresario. Marc states, in Open Source
UIs his belief that open source software programmers should
somehow decided upon a standardized set of hooks so that those who
specialize in UI design can easily plug their UI in.
Why would anyone even attempt to organize such a project? There is
a single common interface across UNIX-like operating systems. It is
called the shell, Marc. UNIX is not a beauty contest. UNIX is a vast
tool. This tool works best when all the point-and-drool UI cosmetics
fall away.
The fact is, Marc wants ease of use and pretty UI on top of open
source so he can better leverage it against his commerce driven ideas.
Mark wants this because the masses want this. Why he thinks open
source should give it too him is beyond my grasp.
Why do I suddenly feel the need to alter the GPL so that I can
release my code under the proviso that Marc Canter or anyone sharing
his genetic material cannot use it.
Then again, I could just make it too hard for folks like him to

Scott seems to have woken up on the wrong side of the bed (the day
he wrote this.) But since I love clarifying people who don't get
what I say - I feel compelled to reply:
1. I'm not altering anybody's GPL - or anything as coniving
as "commerce related" doodley squat. Great compelling Uis
certainly have more to do with making Aunt Tillie's experience better
- no matter how obnoxious, arogant or misunderstanding you UNIX guys
portend to come off.
In fact I have to admit I've heard fo folks like Scott before - I
just never have had the pleasure of running into them. Which
leads me to ask......
2. What is it that you write that we (I) care about?
When I say UIs - I mean jukeboxes, video players, phto albums,
blogging tools, editing systems, topic libraries, knowledge management
and digital ifestyle aggregation systems. What is it that you do
- Scott?
3. Rather than think of UI APIs as generic - I think Scott
needss to think of them as VERY specific. To build
inter-changeable (sometimes known as skins) UIs, it takes very very
detailed data model objects, nomenclature, guidelines and what we used
to say "Interface Police" rules.
This Microsoft and Apple's bread and butter. But anybody
who's used Gnome, worked at Apple or Microsoft or 100 other companies
- knows this stuff in their sleep. It's time we all just banded
together.
4. Which leads me to Scott's rather rude allegations that I
have some sort of evil goals in mind. That doing something with
'commerce' in mind can ONLY mean - BAD things. I gotta say I'm
disappointed in Scott.
The trick is how to do something free and open and STILL win at the
bank. If I (or anybody associated with me) can pull that off - it
won't be for ripping off, taking advantage of or acting like an
asshole to the world. It'll be because we're bettering the world,
bringing value added features and functionality to the world of open
source and if anything - brgining in a little professionalism that my
25+ years in this business has taught me.
If you got a problem with that - then:
- make your software is better than ours. We don't GET
anything from open source, we GIVE to open source.
- make sure to support or promulgate lots of open standards (like
we are)
- and we'll meet at the shootout at the Slashdot Corral. May
the better man win.
- and hey, along the way - you could contribute ideas to the world
too - like I do.
- what's wrong with that? If you don't like um - ignore me -
please
If you got a problem with that - sorry. But certainly don't
accuse me of shit that's completely false, ranging on libelous.
And oh yah - keep making your stuff difficult to understand and
figure out. Brilliant strategy dude. Go for it. I'm sure
you'll get LOTS of powerful, sophisticated customers - just like
you.

There's a new Raymond Scott album! If you
don't know Scott, here's a quick bio: he was a bandleader in the 40s,
well-known for quirky, whimsical songs (many were used in Looney
Tunes). In the 1950s he became interested in electronic music, and
composed amazing pre-Moog marvels, including two albums designed to
soothe babies. The Secret 7 is a group of jazz players headed by Scott
and the 1959 album they recorded is called "The Unexpected." You can
hear a Real Audio sample on the site. Be sure to look at the rest of
Basta Music's offerings. They're a wonderful label out of Holland.

Conversations, turns out to be an accomplished Bonanza pilot. He
graciously invited me out for a day of goofing off in the sky on
Monday. Under rainy skies we departed Marin County's Gnoss Field
in the Bonanza, a "machine invented to make sure that the world didn't
become overpopulated with doctors and lawyers", and retracted the
landing gear before climbing 1000 feet-per-minute up through a hole in
the clouds. Thanks to a turbonormalizer the engine maintained
good power right up to 15,500' where we had to stay to remain clear of
the ice-filled cumulus clouds. We landed on the 12,000' runway
at the former Castle Air Force Base in Atwater, California. The
base closed 10 years ago, devastating the town's economy, but an
airplane museum remains with a collection of WWII and Cold War
planes. The largest is a B-52 and the weirdest is an enormous
B-36 with 6 huge pusher propellers on the mid-wing-mounted piston
engines and four turbojet engines slung under the wingtips for takeoff
assistance.
George W. Bush's F-104 is represented among the fighters as well as
one of the F-111s that Ronald Reagan sent to Libya in 1986 to
demonstrate our irritation with its owner's attacks on American
interests. (Young folks: this incident was notable because Ronbo
went to sleep after ordering the bombing of Libya; he terrified
Qaddafi by not caring enough about the operation to let it disturb his
sleep).
We decided to return to the Bay Area underneath the 5000' overcast.
Before departing the Castle area I practiced some chandelles and
lazy-eights from the right seat. These precision maneuvers are
required of applicants for a flight instructor rating and I'd only
done them in my old Diamond Star and the clunky Piper Arrow trainers.
A chandelle is a maximum performance climb while turning 180 degrees.
The Bonanza has so much power and so little drag with its gear
retracted that this turns out to require a much more extreme pitch-up
attitude than in the Arrow.
As we steered our way around the heavier downpours I noticed that
we were coming up on a large town and asked Doug what it was.
"Modesto, home of Scott Peterson," he replied. For any man who
has been dumped or divorced by a woman reflecting on Scott Peterson
ought to be a humbling experience. Consider that Scott was
beloved by both his wife, a beautiful and kind person, and his massage
therapist girlfriend. This despite the fact that Scott was an
adulterer and murderer, both black marks against a person's
character. So the only reasonable conclusion that a rejected man
can draw is that he is less attractive, as a package, than Scott
Peterson.

about This article by Orson Scott Card. Card is known to most people
for his science fiction, including one of the most popular SF novels
of the late 20th century, Ender's Game. Many people are astonished
to learn that the man who wrote about "that poor little boy" is such
a rabid Fascist. But Card has always been a rabid Fascist, as well
as several other species of asshat, and none of his works demonstrate
that better than the sad tale of Ender Wiggin itself.
