Dmitri Puchkov is a Russian ex-cop who goes by the alias Goblin. "Goblin" is his nom-de-edit when he's remixing Lord of the Rings, dubbing in Russian dialogue to lampoon cops, oligarchs, and gangsters. He's working on a re-cut of Star Wars now. (This is old news, but I only just read about it)
Frodo Baggins is renamed Frodo Sumkin (a derivative from the Russian word sumka, or bag). The Ranger, Aragorn, is called Agronom (Russian for farm worker). Legolas is renamed Logovaz, after a Russian car company famed for its Ladas. Boromir becomes Baralgin, after a Russian type of paracetemol.

Gandalf spends much of the film trying to impress others with his in-depth knowledge of Karl Marx, and Frodo is cursed with the filthy tongue of a Russian criminal.

The films - which Puchkov says were originally made for his close friends but have now gone out on the internet - have found cult appeal in Russia's crowded pirate market, where a pirated, high-quality DVD in both Russian and English costs £5. That is all ordinary Russians, who earn only $300 a month in Moscow, can afford. The Russian pirate industry is worth $311 million, and has grown by 25 per cent since last year, pirates making more than 40 million disks a year.

Cory Doctorow: The Narutrix is a remix of the Matrix Reloaded trailer made by synching the audio from the trailer with carefully, cunningly chosen clips from an anime cartoon called Naruto. The effect is very funny and striking. As the creator says, "Timing is my speciality so it is pretty heavily focussed on that; lipsyncing, punches connecting, things going boom, the usual." Link (Thanks, Mimi!)

Update: Andrew sez, "The flood of traffic has pinned down the Narutrix site. People can also download the video from animemusicvideos.org, or my website."

Warner Music Tries (And Fails) To Make
Friends With Music Bloggers
08/16/2004 06:48 AM
MP3 blogs have been getting a lot of attention lately. The blogs, which usually focus on certain genres of music with the idea to highlight or expose certain new or obscure acts to a wider audience are growing in popularity. They often post an entire MP3 as well. However, it appears that some of the attention directed at these blogs made it to some executives at Warner Brothers Records. In a moment of enlightenment (considering typical record company reaction), instead of trying to shut these sites down, they decided to see what would happen if they embraced them. Someone from Warner contacted a number of these blogs, including an MP3 from a band they wanted to promote. This is somewhat surprising, as many of the sites certainly expected to get sued before they received MP3s from a major label. Still, the effort had its problems. The musician had already been featured months ago on some of the sites, and didn't fit at all with the focus of some of the other sites. Plus, the fear of looking like record company lackeys didn't appeal to many of the sites. Even worse, though, was that on the one site that did post the tracks, a number of out-of-place comments began appearing talking about how "awesome" the band was. A quick check of the IP addresses of the posters, though, showed they came from... Warner Brothers. So, while it's really great that they're actually trying to embrace these sorts of promotions, they still need to learn a thing or two about dealing with bloggers. Still, it's clearly a step forward from an industry that hasn't made many steps in that direction recently.
