Market Through End of Decade
04/26/2004 10:10 AM
Despite inroads by Microsoft's Windows Mobile OS, which has demonstrated success with Motorola among other handset vendors recently, ABI Research believes that Symbian will continue to lead the market for cell phone standardized operating systems. In a market that is still driven by proprietary OS, on the order of 98% this year, Symbian, Microsoft and Linux are fighting over a small portion of the total handset market. But 2% of handsets shipped - essentially all handsets defined as "Smartphones" -- still amount to about 10 million handsets a year. And ABI Research predicts that Smartphones and connected PDAs will represent nearly a quarter of all handsets shipped by 2009.

Sharp to Produce Symbian OS Phones,
Release More Internationally
07/09/2004 11:51 AM

sharp_sh14.jpg imageSharp had some interesting things to say at its recent press event commemorating its 8th year in the cellular phone market, namely that they hope to increase worldwide sales of their handsets by adopting, at least for market of their product line, Symbian OS. Most of Sharp's current lineup use the venerable ITRON embedded OS (and will continue to). Also notable was Sharp Communication Systems' President Masafumi Matsumoto's detailing of Sharp's heavy investment back into its own product, estimating that 40 to 50 percent of Sharp's phones are constructed from components developed and produced by Sharp themselves. "If the cellular phone enterprise expands," said Matsumoto," we can also expand our other device enterprises."

All this is to say, Symbian is growing stronger each day, as a platform -- and more importantly, we might start seeing some of those hot Sharp phones released worldwide.

A Useless Cure For A Harmless Smartphone
Virus
06/21/2004 04:21 AM
Last week news quickly spread about a so-called smartph one worm that had been "discovered." Of course, what most of the stories left out is that you would have to be pretty stupid to actually get the worm. It seems that, once again, the announcement of a vulnerability is just being used by a company to get themselves more publicity, whether or not there's a real risk. This time, an Australian anti-virus firm is claiming that they're the first to come up with software to get rid of this nasty threat, ignoring that plenty of others have pointed out how to get rid of it if you're so stupid as to get it. In the meantime, over in South Korea they seem to be preparing for a more serious phone virus outbreak, as SK Telecom is now offering anti-virus software for phones. Of course, it's unclear how the anti-virus program works. If no phone viruses exist, the definition file must be pretty small.
