FastMac's "Max out your mini" upgrade

FastMac's "Max out your mini" upgrade

FastMac's "Max out your mini" upgrade 04/06/2005 12:34 PM

Shortly after Apple announced its new Mac mini I somehow managed to obtain one of my very own. The mini is touted as The most affordable Mac ever and at $600 for the 1.42 GHz model I really can't deny that claim. But as with all lower priced computers, the Mac mini lacks some of the pep I expect from a new computer. Queue FastMac and the Max out your mini package to save the day. FastMac offers a number of items that can be purchased to upgrade the mini, including a 8X Dual Layer DVD-RW Drive and either 512MB or 1GB of RAM. The mini's greatest short coming has to be it's slow 4200 RPM hard drive. To that end FastMac offers a 60GB 7200 RPM drive as well as a 100GB drive at either 4200 or 5400 RPM. When I first sent my mini off to FastMac I felt as though I was sending my child off for an expensive college education. I knew the mini would come back a better, more productive system but I was hesitant about sending it 1500 miles off into what seemed like the middle of nowhere. Thankfully the folks at FastMac were more than pleased to take the time to reassure me and outline the process step by step. A couple weeks later I was frantically tearing open the packaging the mini had been returned in. I'd never be one to complain about an abundance of free space, but I find raw speed to be far more alluring. In addition to replacing the stock combo drive with the 8X SuperDrive I picked up a 1GB stick of RAM and the 60GB 7200 RPM hard drive. The total cost of the package came to $599.85, essentially equal to that of the mini itself. Considering that the upgrades could potentially double the useful life of the mini I prefer to think of the cost as a wise investment. Aside from the obvious advantages of having a DVD writer over a combo drive I was surprised at how quiet the DVD writer was. I always thought the combo drive included with the mini was rather loud. Often the mechanical grinding noises it made concerned me, wondering what unspeakable things it was doing to my disks. The Pioneer drive FastMac shipped is whisper quiet. It doesn't screech or sputter when you insert a disk. More importantly, when the drive is burning a disk the sound is no louder than a small cooling fan. One of the things I like about the Mac OS is being able to add all of my most frequently used applications to my start up items. Sure, that will increase the time I have to wait until I can actually interact with my Mac after I've logged in but at least I can count on the OS to manage the memory efficiently. With only 256MB of RAM though, I was leery about loading some of the larger applications like Photoshop and Xcode. Now that I have a gigabyte of RAM that is no longer a concern as I can now load all of my favorite applications without any noticeable drop in performance. As for the hard drive, faster is better. I have no doubt that the mini will do wonders for bringing video editing to the home but no matter how fast your processor is you're always going to limited by the speed of your hard drive. The faster the drive can write the data, the faster the CPU can move on to the next batch. The 60GB Hitachi Travelstar hasn't let me down yet. I've noticed a remarkable improvement when copying files and loading applications. Even the sluggish process of optimizing your drive after installing an application finishes noticeably faster. At $599 this will double your initial investment but FastMac certainly offers a nice, simple, all in one package to Max out your mini. Hardware Included: 60GB Hitachi Travelstar E7K60 8x Dual Layer Pioneer DVR-K04L 1GB PC3200 DDR SDRAM Total cost: $599.85 Pros: A quieter mini Noticable speed improvements Fully compatible with iDVD Convenient all in one package Cons: Have to part with your new mini for a couple weeks A touch costly www.fastmac.com If your company has a product you would like Spymac to review, please send an email to news@spymac.com.

To upgrade the MAc Mini to Tiger or not?

To upgrade the MAc Mini to Tiger or not? 04/13/2005 05:42 AM

Well I have used my Mac Mini quite a bit. I still find it more convenient to work in windows. I hate to say it but the OS has not really grown on me that much.

I have not seen were I can really do anything smarter in OS X then windows. The main things I do like about it though is how easy it is to install and un-install applications. I like the mouse but otherwise it is a computer.

I am sure I will be crucified by the Mac zealots but I even find doing podcast on the Windows machine is much easier than the Mac. Simple reason is and it's a secret that Apple probably does not want getting out, the audio amplifiers inside all Macs are set at a fixed amplification level and you have to drive the heck out of the audio input on most Macs to get the audio levels correct.

Heck the mini does not even have a microphone input and while using the Griffin iMic and trying to record I get annoyed after about 30 seconds due to the audio delay being fed to my headset.

Don't get me wrong the mini was a lot of bang for the buck but after hearing my friends talk about how amazing the Mac was I am still wondering what they are talking about it's a computer.

So the question now becomes will I upgrade to Tiger. I suppose if the mini will handle it I will, just because I am a geek. I have finished learning OS X so I might as well. [Yahoo]

A mini-guide to Mac OS X for new Mini
owners

A mini-guide to Mac OS X for new Mini
owners
02/01/2005 08:53 PM

Apple finally went and released an inexpensive computer. With the advent of the Mac mini, some Windows and Linux users who have been curious about Mac OS X but turned off by Apple's high prices have finally bit the bullet and ordered a mini.

Trying an unfamiliar operating system can be irritating at times. Things are not where you expect them to be, the GUI is different, and connecting to servers and other PCs can be frustrating. Hence the mini-guide.

This is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to all things OS X. Its purpose is to help those new to the operating system do simple things, like use a Windows printer, connect to a network share, and figure out what the key with the funny-looking squiggle on it next to the spacebar does (or even use your PC keyboard with a Mac). So if you're an "adder" and are feeling a bit out of sorts, check out our guide.

Either the Mini isn't supported any longer, or, more likely, someone within BMW's marketing department didn't want to dillute the Beemer brand with their low-end cousin. Whichever -- it's still been removed from the site.

Upgrade to gcc 3.3 and/or 10.3

Upgrade to gcc 3.3 and/or 10.3 10/28/2003 11:07 PM
It is now possible to upgrade Fink to take full advantage of the gcc 3.3 compiler, or to use OS X 10.3 if you have that installed. Binary packages corresponding to these upgrades are not yet available, so if you make extensive use of binary packages you may wish to wait a few days before upgrading. If you wish to perform this upgrade, and you had previously installed the June 2003 Developer Tools update from Apple, you will need to install the August 2003 Developer Tools update BEFORE you upgrade Fink. Under 10.3, be sure to install XCode from the XCode disk before upgrading Fink. Running "fink selfupdate" should perform the upgrade for you. The latest version of the fink package manager will automatically detect which version of OS X and which version of gcc you have installed, and will adjust itself accordingly. If you wish to do a fresh install of Fink on a 10.3 system, we recommend bootstrapping from source, starting from fink-full-0.6.0.tar.gz available on fink's sourceforge download page. You'll need XCode for this as well. Also note that once you have Fink version 0.15.0 or higher, you do not need to install system-xfree86 anymore. Fink is capable of automatically determining your system-xfree86 version if you don't already have any fink x11 packages installed. If you currently have an old system-xfree86 package of any kind installed, please run the following: sudo dpkg -r --force-all system-xfree86 system-xfree86-42 \ system-xfree86-43; fink selfupdate; fink index The Fink team is still working on getting Fink packages working under 10.3, but many many packages already work.

More Reasons Not To Upgrade

More Reasons Not To Upgrade 08/12/2004 10:26 PM
One common wisdom in the Macintosh land is to never install updates from Apple immediately. Wait a while, and let all the other beta testers upgrade and report their successs or failture before you do so. Who knows, maybe Apple will even pull the update so that they can work on it somemore before you update?
But now, there is another reason why you shouldn't update so quickly: find out if the latest and greatest Apple patch will disable your beloved hack -- whether it is to play Windows Media files through your AirPort Express, or copy your RealNetwork files to your iPod.
Sometimes, the computer industry can make one sad.

MT 3.1 Upgrade Report

MT 3.1 Upgrade Report 08/31/2004 10:28 PM

Well, I went ahead and upgraded to Movable Type 3.1 with the free version I got from joining the MT Professionals Network (still trying to find a catch...).

Note that if you're considering a 3.1 upgrade, wait — there are errors in the upgrade scripts that Six Apart is working to fix right now. I had to make one code change and forge ahead while ignoring another error in order to get the upgrade to work. It doesn't help that I've hacked this install up pretty badly.

I haven't really tested any new functionality yet. It doesn't seem any faster, which is disappointing, but the new interface is much, much cleaner and the stylesheet has been made more...hackable. Selectors are grouped by template so you can pretty easily find the rule you want to change (TEXTAREA font is pretty large by default...).

One great improvement: the little bold, italic, underline, and link buttons in the editing interface work in non-IE browsers...finally! That alone is worth the upgrade.

The venerable bookmarklet feature has been changed to "Quickpost" (probably avoid conflicting with the JavaScript hacks that people call "bookmarklets"), but it appears to be screwed at the moment — formatting is all off and the TEXTAREA is about 10-pixels wide.

So, while this upgrade looks promising, hang loose for a week or so before rushing in. There are some speedbumps to work out yet. I'll post about the new functionality as I play with it.

More on the Typekey upgrade...

More on the Typekey upgrade... 05/16/2004 12:18 PM

So my installation of Movable Type has never been the simplest of things. I've had to use cgiwrap to avoid some of the more arcane problems with pair's process throttling and I've got MT installed in a completely different directory and domain to my site. For someone with as little overt server knowledge as myself, this means that every time something's supposed to be a simple installation or adaptation process, everything goes completely wrong. This is all by way of me saying that I've still got lots of problems around the place with integrating the Typekey registration system, including but not limited to it randomly not working, having lots of really nasty preview screens that remain totally untemplated and generally feeling more than a little rough around the edges. I'll endeavour to get it all sorted out this evening so that the Monday morning crowd don't start snarking out at me... Plus: Lots of actually interesting posts on real subjects to come soon!

An upgrade to the RSS parser

An upgrade to the RSS parser 11/18/2002 12:58 PM
A while back I read on Dive Into Mark a rant about the sheer volume of traffic people hitting off of his RSS feed were causing. At the time I was developing my RSS reader that is in use now at this site. It's completely written by me, and I'm happy with it. It extracts all of the descriptions, links, and titles out of RSS feeds in any version (atleast I haven't experienced otherwise in my browsing) and returns them in an associative array. Also, it caches the RSS files in serialized format so that it doesn't have to repeatedly hit the servers the RSS files reside on, and subsequent requests do not require reparsing. Instead, it only requests the file if the cached file was written more than an hour and a half ago. But, my RSS parser still did not meet the need described in the above linked Dive into Mark article. Basically, Mark (and others) only want their RSS feeds being requested if they have been modified recently. "Recently" is defined by Mark as 3 hours, which is reasonable. I didn't know how to do this with my RSS parser, so I did some research. I found some information on various sites about doing conditional GET statements with PHP, and now my parser will only fetch the file off the remote server if it has been modified within the last three hours. I am now using this new version of my parser. The parser is not perfect, but I really like it. To view the source of it, click here. An article will follow soon.

Tricky upgrade question

Tricky upgrade question 03/06/2004 01:52 AM
Here’s a tricky chicken-and-egg question for Mac admin types...

I have—actually, a relative of mine has—an iMac running Mac OS 9.0.4 that I’d like to upgrade to OS X.

The CD-ROM drive is broken, so the idea is to buy an external CD drive and hook it up. But all the CD drives we can find require OS 9.1 or greater.

Is there another way to install OS X on this machine? Or a way to install 9.1 so we can get a CD drive running so we can install OS X?
