Are Tech Companies Ungrateful?

Are Tech Companies Ungrateful? 12/12/2003 02:03 PM
Michael Kanellos usually writes interesting opinion pieces for News.com, but this time I'm a bit confused by his thought process. He's claiming that tech companies are ungrateful to the US government. His reasoning appears to be that the US government funded much of the research that became the internet, and now we need more money from them to keep doing more research and to remain competitive, but we're trashing their every move to try to regulate the internet. This doesn't make any sense. The reason tech companies are complaining about recent legal moves by the government is because we're so grateful for what they had done originally, and realize that they're making mistakes that are going to screw it all up. Criticizing their current legislative actions are designed to make things better so that we can remain competitive. No where does it say that just because you accept some money you need to sit down and shut up. What the tech companies are saying is that, despite all the money that was given, the government is now making policies that will negate much of the good that was done with that money.

Are Tech Companies Selling Out To

Are Tech Companies Selling Out To
Hollywood?
01/19/2004 01:44 AM
Dan Gillmor is noticing a disturbing trend of tech companies agreeing to the entertainment industry's demands to include various copy protection mechanisms in what they sell. He talks about boycotting HP until they change their mind (though, he doesn't seem to mind Apple, who also promotes copy protection technology). I'm not as worried about all of this as he is - as I still believe the market will work this all out. The more these companies agree to lock down their machines, the more incentive there is for other companies to come along and offer products that let consumers do what they want. For example, he mentions TiVo's silly lock-down mechanism on their TiVo-To-Go offering. While lots of people have been trashing their plans to lock the content down via a dongle of some sort, the story I heard from CES was that they've announced this as a way to make their investors in the entertainment industry stay calm - but knowing full well that by the time they launch it, they will probably have to ditch the protection plan. The idea was to announce the product with the lock-down system, wait until there was news of other, competing products that don't use such a scheme, and then release their own product without the lock-down, and tell people they needed to respond to what the market was telling them.

Just How Loyal Are You To The Companies

Just How Loyal Are You To The Companies
That Provide Your Tech?
09/20/2004 01:24 PM
While there are plenty of different ways to judge a company's prospects, one interesting element to look at is how "loyal" buyers are. Of course, loyalty may be tough to judge, and simply buying from a company (even repeatedly) doesn't necessarily show loyalty -- as a buyer may end up buying regrettably because there's nothing else available. However, here's a study of corporate IT buyers, where the folks behind the study go out and talk to various buyers to get a real sense of where their loyalties lie, and it suggests which companies might be vulnerable on loyalty. While Dell, Microsoft, Cisco and Oracle scored well (almost all of which may surprise some people), Apple, Intel and PeopleSoft faired poorly (which, again, is likely to surprise people). Of course, more details would be useful in determining what the real issues are. Loyalty can be a function of a variety of things, but it's interesting to see so many often-criticized companies on the "good" list, and so many companies that have good reputations on the "bad" list.

Are Universities Too Close With The Tech
Companies Who Donate?

Are Universities Too Close With The Tech
Companies Who Donate?
11/11/2003 12:53 PM
An interesting look at the large tech companies who donate money, equipment and software to universities, and whether or not it unfai rly biases university curricula in their favor. At the heart of this matter, of course, is Microsoft, who has donated a ton of money to colleges and universities. The universities defend the relationships, saying, basically, that the money is needed - and the companies doing the donating tend to be the technologies that people need to know in order to get jobs after they graduate. In the end, that seems to be the core issue. If the point of the education is to help students get jobs after they graduate, and learning this technology can help them do that, then there isn't a huge problem. If the point, though, is to learn the basic skills across a broad range of technologies, so that they can take that education and go in different directions with it, then the deals may be problematic. Figuring out the right balance is important.

Top Tech companies set to stop consumers

07/14/2004 05:17 AM

A new coalition made up of big name technology companies IBM, Intel, Sony, Microsoft, Warner Bros., Disney and Panasonic have vowed to stop consumers from being able to record HDTV in the privacy of our own homes. Their is already legislation to lock out your Digital Video recorders starting July 1st through embedded chips. This coalition is not good news for the consumer and those of you that care about fair use rights are going to need to speak up because these companies are vowing to control what you can do with content you pay for already. Force Companies To Give Free Tech
Support For Life

Force Companies To Give Free Tech
Support For Life
12/22/2003 12:42 PM
Last week we talked about one idea to improve computer security issues: threa ten to put executives of software companies in jail if their products are not secure. That seemed a bit extreme. This week, however, the Washington Post's Rob Pegoraro has another interesting idea to improve technology product quality: require companies to provide free tech support for life. This way, he argues, the companies will quickly learn about problems, and it will be in their own best interest to get working fixes out there as quickly as possible. It will also give them incentive to do things better the first time around. He argues this is beneficial to the companies as well, as with better products, people will be more willing to spend money on them. I would add one adjustment to this suggestion: make an exception for companies or individuals who give away software for free. This would make it so anyone shopping for software can get a real benefit for paying for a product, and also doesn't unfairly burden those who prefer to just give away software.
