Live-action "Scotland Yard" on the
streets and subways of Toronto
08/02/2004 03:02 AM
Joel is attempting to port a board game called Scotland Yard (something like Clue) into a live-action game played on the streets and transit system of Toronto.
To stand out from the crowd, Mr. X must wear his yellow "X" shirt. Detectives must wear the red "D". To win the game the detectives must physically touch Mr. X (optionally cuff, rough-up, interrogate and incarcerate).

Mr. X is randomly placed at a stop and must phone into HQ to tell his dispatcher what 3 methods of transportation he will be using on his next three moves (subway, streetcar, bus). 3 moves consists of a turn, Mr. X must reveal his location every second turn as he enters that location. His dispatcher must tell the detective's dispatchers, who in turn tell the detectives. The detectives locations known by Mr. X at all times.

Angeles Times)
07/22/2004 04:45 AM
Los Angeles Times - DreamWorks Studios, created by moguls Steven Spielberg, David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg, revealed plans Wednesday to spin off its computer animation factory to the public, highlighting the shift by its founders away from the Hollywood powerhouse they envisioned a decade ago.

DreamWorks Animation to spin off from
film studio, raise $650M in IPO
07/21/2004 06:19 PM
There are big plans for the animation house that built "Shrek" 1 and 2 -- a $650 million IPO and a split from parent company DreamWorks SKG, which was originally formed to unite the creative forces of Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and record producer David Geffen.
DreamWorks Animation, based in the Los Angeles suburb of Glendale, California, would be controlled by Katzenberg and Geffen. Katzenberg would be chief executive and Geffen would sit on the board, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission... Roger Enrico, former chairman and CEO of PepsiCo Inc., would be chairman of the new company. Spielberg would not hold a seat. Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, an initial DreamWorks investor, would sit on the board and could cash out some of his original investment, although the filing does not say he will.

Cory Doctorow: A group operating a BitTorrent tracker in Sweden got a takedown notice from Dreamworks, citing US law. Their response is priceless:
As you may or may not be aware, Sweden is not a state in the United States of America. Sweden is a country in northern Europe. Unless you figured it out by now, US law does not apply here. For your information, no Swedish law is being violated.

Please be assured that any further contact with us, regardless of medium, will result in
a) a suit being filed for harassment
b) a formal complaint lodged with the bar of your legal counsel, for sending frivolous legal threats.

It is the opinion of us and our lawyers that you are fucking morons, and that you should please go sodomize yourself with retractable batons.

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
03/22/2005 05:03 PM
Yesterday we noted that the MPAA and movie theater owners were whini ng about how much people coming in an taping movies was hurting their business. The obvious response, we pointed out, is to recognize that going to the movies is a social experience. It's not just about the content (though, that is important), but the overall experience. If they improved that, then people would want to go -- even if they could score the same movie off the internet or a cheap DVD bought off the street. While the folks in Hollywood refuse to entertain this idea, someone (anonymously) in the comments to that story pointed to an article in China noting that this is exactly what Chinese movie theaters have done. After years of declining attendance, they finally shaped up and made going to the movies cool again. They improved the overall experience, putting in better equipment and more comfortable seats. They improved the sound and the lighting as well. It sounds like they also made some theaters to be more like bars, to help attract young adults away from traditional bars. Yet the supposedly "creative" movie people in Hollywood insist "nothing can be done" to get people into the theater.

SMS Novel To Become MMS Movie

SMS Novel To Become MMS Movie 09/20/2004 06:52 AM
Not so long ago, there was a bit of a press frenzy over a novel that was being delivered via SMS text messaging in China. Well, to build off of that hype, a company has now bought the film rights to the story, and yes, they will be filming it in short segments which can be sent to mobile phones as well. While I do think mobile video content should be focused on shorter bits of content, given that the people viewing it are likely to be on the go and/or interrupted more frequently, I wonder how well you can hold the plot line of a movie that's broken into so many pieces.

CC Brazil: The Movie

CC Brazil: The Movie 12/17/2004 06:33 PM
Earlier this spring, Creative Commons staff went down to Brazil to oversee the launch of one of the first country-specific licenses. There was a big event attended by Gilberto Gil, the Minister of Culture for Brazil, and a film crew followed everyone around for a couple days. The result is a nice little 11 minute film on the process of the licenses, the impact it could have on their culture, and reactions from the launch event. Watch it at the Internet Archive, and if you have your own videos like this to share, be sure to try out our CC Publisher app to add your films to the Archive as well.
