Wacom has an updated Intuos3 drawing tablet coming
out, at least in merry ol' not America, which looks like it includes a
new pen with different tips, as well as buttons built-in to the sides
(to choose alternate styles and such, I'd imagine). Not sure on a
price yet, but they do look a little classier than the old models, and
the new fat-bottomed pen (Oh, it's an airbrush tool. Thanks,
guys!) looks very comfortable.
Here are a few pages in not English, if you'd like to take a
gander.

We first mentioned Wacom's
Bluetooth Graphic Tablet when it was released in Japan last month. Renamed the Graphire
Bluetooth Tablet, it comes with a rechargeable battery that lasts for
25 hours. The Graphire Bluetooth also features a cordless,
battery-free, pressure-sensitive pen with eraser and a similarly
battery-free cordless mouse. With a list price of $250 and 6 x 8
inches of workable space, Wacom's latest offers the convenience of
sitting 30 feet away from your screen where perhaps, inspiration is
more likely to strike.

07/01/2004 08:50 AMDeveloper Scott Lahteine has announced that Beta 5 of
TabletMagic 1.0, a free
open source Mac OS X driver for unsupported Wacom serial tablets, is
now available. The software includes a control application, and
Lahteine notes that it currently supports the ArtZ-II and PenPartner
tablets as well as others whose model numbers start with CT, KT, SD or
UD. He also says that it works with most USB-to-Serial adapters, such
as those made by Keyspan, but it doesn't yet work with ADB tablets nor
the iMate. TabletMagic 1.0 requires Mac OS X v10.2 or higher.

New Fink releases.
New Fink releases.
06/17/2005 05:41 PM
Three new Fink releases are
available
today: version 0.8.0 (for 10.4),
version 0.7.2 (for 10.3), and version 0.6.4 (for 10.2).
All three releases include source files, binary packages, and a Fink
installer for new users.
The new release for 10.4 includes all currently-available "stable"
packages
in source and binary form: there are 1565 of these, which constitutes
more
than 80% of the 1909 packages available in the 10.3 release. Work
continues
by the fink developers on bringing more of the stable packages to
Tiger.
The new release for 10.2 will be the last official release for that
version of Mac OS X. Although no further updates (not even security
updates) will be provided by the Fink team, we anticipate that the
0.6.4 release will be usable for years to come.
Users upgrading to 10.4 can now simply issue a
fink selfupdate command, followed by
sudo /sw/lib/fink/postinstall.pl (for first-time updaters
on 10.4), fink scanpackages and sudo apt-get update.
We don't recommend bootstrapping at the moment, since bootstrapping
does
not work with the newly-released XCode 2.1 from Apple.

"Get a license or do not sample"
"Get a license or do not sample"
09/09/2004 09:02 AMSo
ordered
the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals. Sampling, we're told, is piracy. But
be certain to see the 19 footnotes in this relatively brief opinion,
or the 28 separate quotes the opinion includes from other peoples
work. I assume the court got a license for those.
Now that's not quite fair. The court's decision turns upon its
"literal" reading of the sound recording statute. The sound recording
statute has no de minimus exceptions, the court held. So while you are
free to copy three notes from a musical composition, you can't copy
the same three notes from a recording. So copying (so long as de
minimus) is fine; cut & paste is not. It is a "bright-line" rule the
Court has crafted: Ask permission first. (And don't worry, they might
have added.
It's
simple.)
So once again: life in the analog world is freer than life in the
digital world. You can do it, just don't use technology to do it --
unless, of course, your lawyer has spoken to their lawyer.
