The perils of regulating Microsoft

The perils of regulating Microsoft

The perils of regulating Microsoft 04/06/2005 08:52 AM

A new version of Microsoft's flagship Windows operating system will soon hit stores across the European Union. But there will be little advertising or promotion to support the launch. Indeed, Microsoft will probably be hoping the new product will prove a complete flop.

Perils of publishing

Perils of publishing 02/13/2004 05:08 AM

Charles Herrera sent an email yesterday saying that he has a whole new impression of blogging after watching the talk I gave at Microsoft on Monday. It was a gratifying email for another reason.

He says: "To someone who has read Scripting News since the start, but who is not involved in scripting or blogging, it has seemed to me that on occasion you have been forced into a grumpy mode. Sometimes words on a screen don't always convey the sense of the person underneath. Of course, the 'grumpy' that I saw, or thought I saw, comes probably from the flames all around you."

This is worth emphasizing. If you scan an email quickly and there's a bunch of nasty words with someone's name in the middle, the mind has a tendency to connect the words and the person. Unfortunately this is how people read on the Web. Charles noted that I'm a friendly person, in person. I like to think that's true. Sometimes it's hard to see that in the writing. I know.

An LA Times reporter finally did what most people discovered long ago: the ability to search Google for your own name. However, he came to a horrifying realization: he wasn't the only Geoff Boucher. Even worse, in his opinion, it looked like the other Geoff Boucher might be smarter than he was. Once again, we discover the dangers of a combination of too much free time and Google.

Powell Says He's Against Regulating VoIP

Powell Says He's Against Regulating VoIP 12/02/2003 12:13 AM
Despite some fears (expressed last month by former FCC chair Reed Hundt) that the FCC had already made up their mind to regulate VoIP, it certainly doesn't sound like that from the description of today's FCC meeting on VoIP as written up by the Washington Post. FCC Chair Michael Powell made all the right statements about why regulating VoIP at this point would probably be bad, and that the various "problems" people described in not regulating VoIP can be solved through other methods.

Airports Hit Brick Wall in Regulating

Airports Hit Brick Wall in Regulating
Unlicensed Radio
06/25/2004 12:01 PM
The FCC says landlords, associations can't regulate Part 15 use: The FCC's Office of Engineering and Technology says that the function of regulating and coordinating frequency use is reserved to the FCC itself. It's a clear refutation of mall owners, airports, and condominium associations to limit use of Wi-Fi and other wireless technologies. (Document as Word, PDF, Text.) The report says in part, the FCC has exclusive authority to resolve matters involving radio frequency interference [RFI] when unlicensed devices are being used, regardless of venue. We also affirm that the rights that consumers have under our rules to install and operate customer antennas one meter or less in size apply to the operation of unlicensed equipment, such as Wi-Fi access points - just as they do to the use of equipment in connection with fixed wireless services licensed by the FCC. And it's hard to put their conclusion any better than they themselves: The rules prohibit homeowner associations, landlords, state and local governments, or any other third parties from placing restrictions that impair a customer antenna user's ability to install, maintain, or use such customer antennas transmitting and/or receiving commercial nonbroadcast communications signals when the antenna is located "on property within the exclusive use or control" of the user where the user has a "direct or indirect ownership or leasehold interest in the property, except under certain exceptions for safety and historic preservation." Dewayne Hendricks notes in his post of this order that airlines only recourse now is to appeal this decision to the entire Commission. In other words, airlines, start your (Wi-Fi) engines.
