The search wars added another multimedia layer
this week, as Google added the
ability to
upload some video files
to its servers for storage.
Google has recently launched a video search service, including the
ability to query some
television history . Yahoo , one
major competitor for Google, has also launched its own video search tool .

Google's mission is to organize the world's information, and
that includes the thousands of programs that play on TVs every day.
Google Video enables you to search a growing archive of televised
content – everything from sports to dinosaur documentaries to news
shows. Just type in your search term (for instance, ipod or Napa
Valley) or do a more advanced search (for instance, title:nightline)
and Google Video will search the closed captioning text of all the
programs in their archive for relevant results. Click on a program
title on your results page and you can look through short snippets of
the text along with still images from the show. Visit the "About this
show" side panel to learn when this show will air next. This will be
added to the search engine section of all the
2005 Internet
MiniGuides.

Google Video Search
02/01/2005 08:45 PMThe google video search is
pretty freaking cool. You can tell they're scraping show transcripts
which lots of services already have (I seem to recall something called
TVeyes used to email me when the word "blog" or "metafilter" was
mentioned on TV, which used to happen only once or twice a year). But
they also are doing screengrabs which is really interesting, so they
must be pulling down video. They even show me all the local stations
near my zip code that show up in my searches. Maybe someday Google
will be like a iTunes Movie Store where I can one click download
programs I wanted to watch?
Anyway, here are a couple cool searches: the only blogger I could
find mentions of was Nick
Denton and it looks like Movable Type
really was mentioned on Jeopardy and those cards weren't just
photoshop mockups someone posted months ago.
Oh, and of course Lessig shows
up. That guy is everywhere.

Google video to accept submissions

04/04/2005 07:23 PMSAN FRANCISCO - Google's video search engine may soon take you to your
neighbors' home movies.
Google is about to start accepting video content from the public for
its Google Video service, a system now in public beta testing that
lets anyone search a variety of TV clips by keyword. The service
returns excerpts of show transcripts -- grabbed from close-captioning
feeds -- and still images captured from the shows' footage, but it
doesn't provide actual video clips that users can play back.
"In the next few days we're actually going to start taking video
submissions from people, and we're not quite sure what we're going to
get, but we decided we'd try this experiment," said Larry Page,
Google's co-founder and president for products said on Monday at a
panel discussion at the National Cable Television Association (NCTA)
National Show in San Francisco. A large audience gathered to see Page
and other IT and entertainment executives burst into laughter. Page
didn't provide any other details of the plan, but Google spokesman
Nate Tyler said Monday that more information would be available in a
few days.
Page also drew loud applause when he said he had recently switched
from DSL (digital subscriber line) to a cable modem and found a big
speed boost.
The five executives agreed that technology is transforming the way the
public consumes information and entertainment and that cable operators
have a good opportunity to benefit from the changes. Time-shifting,
online content downloading and the proliferation of new mobile devices
such as Apple Computer's iPod and Sony's PlayStation Portable are
among the forces disrupting traditional cable TV and other programmed
entertainment sources, they said.
Also during the panel, Cisco Systems President and Chief Executive
Officer (CEO) John Chambers said he believes more consolidation is
necessary in the U.S. service provider industry.
"Too much competition is just as bad as too little," said Chambers,
who heads the dominant provider of data network backbone equipment and
warned of the need to build out the nation's broadband infrastructure
for global competitiveness.
Also participating on the panel were Jeffrey Katzenberg, film producer
and co-founder of DreamWorks, Jonathan Miller, chairman and chief
executive officer of America Online and Brian Roberts, chairman and
CEO of Comcast.

02/01/2005 09:22 PMGoogle#8217;s new video search sounds really cool, but I just
can#8217;t seem to get behind it. As cool as it sounds, I find that I
am coming away from the experience feeling like there is simply
something missing. Being I have yet to see ANY video clips at all with
the service, I think the beta program seriously should be renamed
something else entirely#8230;.

Google Video Hosting who own's it and
more!
04/05/2005 02:39 PMI touched on this subject last night. With Google's ever increasing
appetite for data be it e-mail, video etc. They must have warehouses
full of computers with nothing but hard-drives in them. Imagine
offering 2 gigs of storage to virtually anyone that wants storage.
Folks that is impressive. But the question has been raised and I
agree with Dan Gillmor is who owns that data once Goggle has it. I
could realistically see them offering to allow people to upload Audio
etc.
At what point does Google stop being a company but a national
historic site or being classified a National Archive, with all of
that information locked up on their computers and their millions of
hard-drives. I really would like to take a walk through one of there
storage facilities.
I understand completely why they are building their next data
center next to a nuclear power plant. [Dan Gillmor]

with ways to expand the reach of its search service.
"In the next few days, we're actually going to start taking video

Page said at a conference in San Francisco on Monday.
Google is accepting digital video files of any length and size.
Pending Google's approval process, the service will allow others to
search, preview, purchase and play uploaded videos. Google Video is
still in beta phase.
