Reshaping the telecom landscape

Reshaping the telecom landscape

Reshaping the telecom landscape 04/06/2005 05:38 AM

The next two years will be painful. But once the digestion is completed, we can expect serious competition to ensue and more emphasis on innovation.

Younger Generation Reshaping The
Workplace

Younger Generation Reshaping The
Workplace
11/10/2003 11:01 PM
While we've been having some fun debating whether or not people doing person al surfing or playi ng games at work was a good thing, there's increasing evidence that the new generations of workers are going to push this sort of thinking into the workplace - no matter how you feel about it. The younger generation of workers are now completely digitally literate, and believers in collaborative, open environments over broadcast, closed systems. The article points to a business school that had a WiFi setup in the classroom, which a professor turned off - and the students revolted, saying that it was a part of how they worked. That same attitude is pushing its way into the workplace as well. Since people are connected 24/7, and are expected to be doing work at 10pm at night, they see no good reason why they can't play a quick game at 3pm. In fact, many argue, by letting employees work on their own time, they can be even more productive. This view contrasts greatly with the top-down management style that is still in place in many companies. Of course, that will adjust over time - when the younger workers either bring innovation in, or those older companies find themselves unable to compete, and unable to lure new talent. This is not, of course, to say that such systems can't (or won't) be abused. They will most certainly be abused. The response, though, is to deal with the abuse - and not punish everyone else for the bad seeds. If you're not getting work done, then there's clearly a problem - but that's something that can be easily determined.

Changing media landscape

Changing media landscape 04/09/2004 03:54 PM

Here's a perfect example of how and why personal blogs will change the media landscape of the future:

Mark Cuban has a weblog.

You see, before Mark Cuban had a weblog, he had enjoyed being a media whore, and he had to be to get the press coverage he adores. He had to create attention in the media to get his message out. He no longer has to do that but he still can because of who he is. He's already publishing corrections to stories written about him, and pointing out bad writers (in his opinion).

I'd argue that before Mark started his blog, blogs were still relatively small in the world of readership on the web, but... by starting a blog, Mark will introduce the concept to millions of sports fans in a casual manner. Basketball followers will, in droves, be able to follow Mark's own words without the filter of journalists...

Pretty damn powerful, in my opinion.

Mark Cuban may just be the guy that changes the face of blog publishing. I know I'll read his weblog, just because I like to keep up with weblogs, but I also know that my brother will read it, just because he likes to keep up with the Mavs...

How long does anyone wanna say it'll take the major sports news organizations out there to start their own blogs for their writers? How long until we see some more major business people blogging for the PR value of it alone? [via Scoble and links via A Penny For...]

Surveying the Open Source Landscape 05/05/2004 06:18 PM
It is easy to see the impact that open source software has had on the developer community. A Google search for "open source" turns up over nineteen million results. That's more than a similar search for "Oracle", and nearly one-fifth as many as for "Microsoft", the king of proprietary software. This article will describe what open-source software is, and examine a few of the products that are out there on the open-source landscape. eBCVG

Lyra Research’s new report, "Commercial Printing: An Overview of Production and Wide-Format," is essential reading for vendors in the commercial printing market. The report focuses on key trends in commercial printing, including sharp increases in sales of eco-solvent or mild solvent wide-format printers, declining prices for wide-format devices, and inexpensive Chinese wide-format printer products entering the European and U.S. markets. On the narrow-format side, acquisitions by key players have taken center stage. [PRWEB May 18, 2005]

Transformation from the Internet as a
subset of telecom to telecom as a subset
of the Internet
12/11/2003 03:41 PM
Kevin Werbach comments on Jeff Pulver's worries about the FCC regulating voice-over-Internet technology:
As I said at the FCC VOIP hearing last week, the real issue is the transformation from the Internet as a subset of telecom to telecom as a subset of the Internet. That means treating voice as an application that can run on any platform, not as the platform itself.

A New Telecom Act?

A New Telecom Act? 02/10/2004 02:47 AM
An article yesterday in Total Telecom confirms what I've been saying for some time: the Telecommunications Act of 1996 is due for a rewrite.

"I think it is inevitable that we will see a new bill," said Bill Bailey, senior counsel for the Senate Commerce Committee."

I also seem to have guessed right on the likely time frame for the new Act: 2010 or so.  With all the money at stake, it will take years for a bill to make it through Congress.  Better late than never. The current legal framework in the US is so out of step with the real world that it must be reformed.

Telecom Thinkability

Telecom Thinkability 02/01/2005 09:33 PM

Back when I was at the FCC, then-Chairman Reed Hundt famously torpedoed a rumored BellSouth-AT&T deal by calling it "unthinkable" for regulators. Now comes word that SBC, one of the other Bell companies, is in serious talks to acquire AT&T.

We'll see. The industry has changed a lot in the past few years, but I'm still skeptical something like this will actually happen. Given the p rogress AT&T has made in transforming itself into a data-centric company, it would also be a bit of a shame if it were swallowed up by one of the Bells. On the regulatory side, much may depend on who replaces Michael Powell at the FCC. It won't be an antitrust crusader, of course, but in this game, degrees of emphasis matter.
