Being the best doesn't always mean being the most popular. We all know of many inferior products that are immensely, sometimes perplexingly, popular. However, this does not mean that one must forsake the pursuit of excellence when pursuing a broad market share. As proponents of open source software, it should not be beneath us to pursue popularity or to look to proprietary developers as examples. And by following the right examples, we can help spread the usage of open source software without sacrificing the goal of software excellence.

At the same time that many open source vendors have stumbled, though, the acceptance of open source has gone through the roof. And it is here that we can see the true significance of the Sherlock Holmes story with which I began this piece: the dog did nothing because it was the owner of the dog who came in during the night.

Whether companies sell or provide their databases with fully available source code, through a new open source project, or with their very own open source license, there is definitely open source fever in the database business these days. Older, established database makers such as IBM, Sybase, and CA are releasing the code for what were previously proprietary products. But these players are coming late to the party thrown by MySQL, PostgreSQL, BerkelyDB maker Sleepycat, and Firebird. How much open source beer are these newcomers bringing to the database bash, or are they simply coming in and asking where the cups are?

A new policy set in place by the administration of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva aims to move its systems from expensive Microsoft products to a Linux -based platform in order to cut computer costs. Sergio Amadeu, head of Brazil's National Information Technology Institute , also hopes that the move to open source will help ease the digital divide in his country:

[He] argues that the gap between the needy and the wealthy will only deepen unless the poor have easy access to the technology that the rich have at their fingertips, especially in developing countries like Brazil.

IBM has entered into an agreement with the Brazilian government to explore the move to open source.

My March 21 entry about upcoming.org turned out to be an odd juxtaposition because, on the same day, a new events database called EVDB was announced and shown at PC Forum. It's due out shortly in public beta but I haven't seen it, so for now I only know what you can also learn from reading, among others: Dan Farber, Ross Mayfield, Om Malik, David Weinberger, and Paul Kedrosky (whose recent archive is missing this morning, yikes). The consensus seems to be that EVDB will be a Web-2.0-style, Wiki-style, RSS-friendly, Flickr-and-del.icio.us-like thingy. Sounds promising! I'll certainly check it out when it's public. ...

Bill Dummond has another new project. Previously he had been involved with the KLF, and now seems to run the Penkiln Burn website.
The Open Manifesto is a new offshoot - which admidst some nice design, captures peoples personal art manifestos- there are some true gems on here. There are also some 10 ten 'charts' which seem to have stopped in August 2004 - including judgement by Stewart Home - a fantastic author.

One of Bill Drummonds other projects was previously been mentioned here. More can be found through the fascinating Penkiln Burn.
