IBM To Expense Stock Options
(NewsFactor)
04/06/2005 03:47 PMNewsFactor - IBM (NYSE: IBM) says it will start expensing stock
options in view of new Securities and Exchange
Commission guidelines that go in effect on June 15th. The
world’s largest computer firm joins other large firms that have
decided to count the value of stock options against their earnings,
but leaves the ranks of many technology firms that offer stock options
as an incentive to
attract the best talent.

IBM Agrees To Expense Options
IBM Agrees To Expense Options
04/06/2005 02:16 PMJust a few months before being required to, IBM is saying that they,
too, will
join with some other companies in agreeing to expense
stock options. Once again, this whole debate seems sort of silly.
For most companies, the idea of expensing stock options is pointless.
The expense will be a made up number, and won't accurately reflect
anything when it shows up on the income statement (the details of
stock option plans are already available in financial statements --
just not as an expense). However, those who seem to be claiming that
this will be the end of startups are probably overreacting as well.
Most folks on Wall Street are smart enough to understand how the
change in the accounting rules impacts the company's bottom line, and
since this doesn't change the cash position of the company in any real
way it shouldn't really impact much of anything. Certainly, a few
companies will want to get rid of, or offer fewer, stock options --
but other methods of compensating employees for taking risks will
become more popular, or companies will realize that the increased
expense on their income statement really doesn't matter that much in
the long term when the benefit is that they can attract better talent.

Employees Still Want Stock Options
Employees Still Want Stock Options
01/26/2004 03:29 AMDuring the boom years, people were giving up high salaries to take
jobs where they received piles and piles of stock options, believing
that their dot com lottery tickets were guaranteed to bring them
insane wealth. While it worked out for many people, many more ended
up with nothing more than a lesson in the downsides of risk. You
might think, in these "back to reality" times, stock options wouldn't
be as big a draw any more, but that turns out to not be true.
Employees
still want stock options - and it's for the same reason that
stock options were originally created: to give the employees a sense
of ownership in the company they work for. While most admit that it
doesn't change their day-to-day behavior (and it shouldn't), it does
make them more loyal and more likely to keep track of how the company
is doing overall. It's just that most people don't expect to cash in
their options a year after joining a company and retire to travel the
world.

12/17/2004 06:32 PMIn doing some filing tonight I ran across some old paperwork. Sitting
next to me now is a NOTICE OF STOCK OPTION GRANT from Yahoo Inc. to
Jeremy Zawodny (at my old address). It grants me thousands of options
to buy YHOO at a strike price of $390.25. These options expire on
12/28/2009. Heh. That's my initial grant from 5 years ago when I
started at Yahoo. Can you say "joined just before the bubble burst?" I
thought you could....

11/04/2003 10:55 AMThe California Public Employees' Retirement System, the biggest U.S.

would let the company pay workers with stock instead of options. The
fund also opposed the makeup of the board's audit committee. Calpers
withheld votes for directors on Microsoft's three-member audit
committee because the company authorized its auditor, Deloitte &
Touche LLP, to perform other services, spokesman Brad Pacheco said.
