04/08/2005 12:50 PMThunderbird Finds It Hard To Mimic Firefox's Rapid Rise,
Says Report: A report has been released which indicates that
Thunderbird is not flourishing the way Firefox is.
Thunderbird's major shortcoming is the absence of an integrated
calendar, the report says. A future release is expected to fill that
void. Once calendaring becomes available, Thunderbird will be much
more competitive, the report suggests.
Even so, the study notes that Outlook's position is strengthened by
third-party developers. With hundreds of plug-ins available, Outlook
users may be reluctant to switch until Thunderbird offers a greater
range of expansion options.
I say give it time. Lightning will help.

12/19/2004 03:08 PMThe Western European mobile content market has been slow to take off,
reaching just EUR2.3 billion in 2003, well behind Japan and Korea.
Revenues could reach EUR15.0 billion by 2009 if operators resolve
pricing and billing issues. New services are taking centre stage,
such as mobile music, video clips and downloadable information
applications. Java will increasingly displace SMS and WAP as the
method of delivery for text-based information. Report includes
forecasts for service adoption, spend, ARPU and revenue in France,
Germany, Italy, Spain, Sweden, the UK and Western Europe as a whole.

Slipstream SP2 into Windows XP
Slipstream SP2 into Windows XP
08/10/2004 12:11 AMNow that Windows XP Service Pack 2 is available to the general public,
we've taken the liberty of creating a tutorial to show you how to
slipstream Service Pack 2 (SP2) into a standard bootable Windows XP
Installation CD.
The benefits of slipstreaming SP2 into a bootable Windows XP CD are
numerous, including being able to reinstall Windows XP without the
need to download and install SP2 from Windows Update afterwards. Files
will automatically be up-to-date with the latest SP2 files should you
need to change your system.
Screenshots and Step-By-Step instructions are included as well as
links to any and all files/applications you'll need.

(KB825116)
11/04/2003 11:37 PMDirectX 9.0b was released on 7/23/03 to address the MIDI security
issue identified in bulletin MS03-030. A small number of non-security
fixes were also included in the release. One of these fixes caused
several TV Tuner capture card/driver combinations using video formats
other than NTSC (NTSC-J, PAL, SECAM) to no longer initialize correctly
on Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003. Symptoms include
loss of capture functionality and potential inability to set/retain
device capture settings. This hotfix, documented further in Knowledge
Base article 825116, has been issued to correct the flaw.
11-04-03 update: The English hotfix package has been modified to allow
patching of all language installations supported by the affected
Operating Systems.

Windows Installer 3 Update
09/09/2004 10:58 AMMicrosoft have released info on the progress of their next generation
installer sofware, version 3.
"Since the general availability of Windows XP Service Pack 2, the
Windows Installer team has received numerous inquiries about the
status of the Windows Installer 3.0. We wanted to give everyone an
update and pointers to where you can find the information you need.
The Windows Installer 3.0 is released in
three pieces:
The first piece is the actual bits that shipped as part of Windows XP
Service Pack 2. Service Pack 2 is widely available through Windows
Update as well as from
here.
The second piece is the SDK documentation and tools that are available
of the Windows XP Service Pack 2 SDK that is now available from
here.
The final piece is the down level redistributable for Windows 2000
Service Pack 3 and 4, Windows XP, Windows XP Service Pack 1, and
Windows Server 2003. Unfortunately, we have experienced a delay in
making this redistributable available. We expect to make the
redistributable
available in September, but we do not yet have
a firm date."

08/14/2004 04:42 AMFor those of you how have been waiting for Microsoft to release the
express installer for Service Pack 2 because 272MB is too much for
you, the wait is now over.
Typical users of the express installer should expect a 80-90MB
download, since the express installer only downloads updates for
components that your computer has. This is a more reasonable size for
dial-up users, and others who can't spare the bandwidth.
There is no difference in the files that are downloaded between this
version and the full network install, except that the network install
will contain content that your computer probably will not use. Also,
it should be noted that you
cannot use the express installer to
create slipstream installs.
