Insurance Company Offering eBay
Insurance
11/17/2003 04:17 AM
Everyone has heard about various eBay scams, and it's making people increasingly nervous to buy or sell products on the site. So, along comes an insurance company to try to help alleviate some of the problems. They're offering a form of eBay insurance, though it might not work the way you would expect. It's targeted at eBay power sellers who are willing to give up a small percentage of each sale for the right to display a "BuySafe" logo. The logo is supposed to link to a site that will verify that the logo has been approved. The insurance company (Hartford) then insures that the buyer will either receive the good - or the money they paid for the good will be returned. Of course, they'll only handle claims that occur within 30 days of the sale, so if the seller keeps telling you to hang on a little while longer, you might be out of luck. Also, eBay offers their own service like this, but the fine print is a killer. While the service promises to refund up to $1,000, it isn't $1,000 per purchase, but $1,000 per seller. So, if (as did happen) a seller with such a logo scams people out of a million dollars, the company would split $1,000 among all the victims. Not particularly comforting.

Slashdot Is Worthless

Slashdot Is Worthless 01/07/2003 09:53 PM
There. I said it. Slashdot is worthless. OK, I'll admit that the headlines are useful, but the comments certainly are not. The sad thing about Slashdot is that there are still people posting useful and interesting comments, and they're utterly and completely lost among the utter crap that floods the site. Generally I make do by simply ignoring the comments section on Slashdot entirely, but after reading the comments on the Jhai PC yesterday, I realized that the comments section is not just worthless but actually a malign force. -- rafeco

I see it slightly differently. Slashdot is great as a black hole for all the stupid comments you have kept deep down inside you, a place you can let go of all your shit. Just like this weblog!

Homer on citizens media.

Just watched Sunday's season finale of The Simpsons on our TiVo. Homer has this to say about all the residents of Springfield starting their own newspapers: "Instead of one big-shot controlling all the media, now there's a thousand freaks Xeroxing their worthless opinions." Ah, citizens media.

;) -kc.

[unmediated]

Man oh man, what can I say.

As Homer and Springfield go - so go the world.

Copy Protected CD's are Worthless

Copy Protected CD's are Worthless 06/17/2005 03:50 PM

What is it going to take to get the music recoding and production industry to wake up. After all how many people actually listen to an actual CD these days. My 99 disk CD player was sold at a garage sale several years ago, and the only thing I play now is music from the file server in my office piped into my stereo via WiFi.

If your pissed off about these anti-copying techniques, then you need to start speaking out. When you buy a CD that has these restrictions call the companies and tell them what you think. Until you stand up for your rights and demand fair use, the recording industry is not going to stop.

Consumers have a choice, and if we step out and say were not going to take it anymore, they will listen. But this takes a lot of people calling them out. So let's get busy. [Techdirt< /a>]

Start-up launches Linux legal protection

Open Source Risk Management plans on Monday to begin selling Linux users protection against copyright infringement claims such as those levied by the SCO Group.

The New York-based company is launching the insurance-like offering after a six-month study that compared Linux with several versions of Unix. The evaluation uncovered no copyright problems with versions 2.4 or 2.6 of Linux's heart, or kernel, a finding that contradicts SCO's legal attack on IBM, AutoZone and DaimlerChrysler.

Big Brother Brand Car Insurance

Big Brother Brand Car Insurance 08/18/2004 12:46 AM
A British car insurance company is offering a pay-as-you-drive policy that includes a black box for transmitting a driver's mileage data -- which means cheaper insurance rates for people who don't drive much. There is a similar "black box" policy in the US, but the driving behavior is stored for review by the driver, and the driver just gets a discount if he/she chooses to pass the data onto the insurance company. These policies have been suggested in the past, but usually are quickly shouted down by a somewhat horrified public. Still, the insurance companies are trying again. The flip side to these cheaper policies is that drivers are giving up their "freedom" to drive a bit recklessly, and it's not too much of a stretch of the imagination to foresee a point where driving behavior could be constantly monitored by wireless sensors. As long as these insurance policies are all voluntary, the companies say no one can complain about Big Brother, but there's a point at which "voluntary" doesn't become so voluntary when most insurance carriers offer such a policy, and those who "voluntarily" opt-out are charged much higher rates. Either way, "choosing" to break the speed limit could get a lot more expensive soon.

Media Liability Insurance

Media Liability Insurance 06/17/2005 03:45 PM

Online Publishing Risks Create Need for Libel Insurance: Interesting article about liability insurance for online publisher. Essentially, these policies will cover you if someone sues you for something you wrote.

The need to publish in "Internet time" further increases the risks for online publishers. The public now expects to read about news online as it happens, thus affording little opportunity for the type of extensive editing and fact-checking procedures typically employed in the offline world. Bloggers generally post to the Web without any review or oversight by a third-party.

[...] Typically, the minimum limit for a media policy is $1 million. For larger publishers, coverage up to $100 million can readily be placed. Premiums for media policies can start as low as $1,500. Deductibles generally start at $5,000 for a $1 million policy.

Identity Theft Insurance

Identity Theft Insurance 03/22/2005 04:32 PM

Allstate launches identity theft coverage in Tennessee: Allstate insurance has started offering identity-theft insurance as a rider to homeowners' policies.

Allstate's new identity theft expenses coverage is available for Allstate homeowners and renters in Tennessee for approximately $30 a year. It provides customers access to professional identity restoration assistance. If a customer chooses to do the work on their own, Allstate's policy provides up to $25,000 in reimbursement coverage for expenses incurred to restore their identity, including attorney fees, loan reapplication fees, credit report fees, and lost wages.

Along with spam, identify theft is another parasite propeled by the Net. Funny how these things open up entire revenue streams of their own. For every problem, there is a solution...and someone who will sell it to you.

I wonder if they could increate the premium based on Net usage? Do they Google for you before they write the policy?
