So Long, Long Distance (The Motley Fool) 09/07/2004 02:07 PM
The Motley Fool - The Olympic Games are now history, but not AT&T's (NYSE: T - News) $25 million ad campaign to redefine its image. After years of getting clobbered by the regional Bell companies such as BellSouth (NYSE: BLS - News), Verizon (NYSE: VZ - News), Sprint (NYSE: FON - News), and MCI (Nasdaq: MCIP - News), the company has turned its business focus from traditional phone service to networking.

Sony's 3 CCD HDV HDR-FX1 Camcorder

Sony's 3 CCD HDV HDR-FX1 Camcorder 09/07/2004 06:47 AM

sony-hdr-fx1-big-1.jpg imageSony's new 3 CCD HDV camcorder, the HDR-FX1, has been formally introduced by the company after an initial preview at this year's CeBit. What makes it so special? Well, along with a host of other interesting features, the FX1 has the ability to capture video in 1080i at 60 interlaced frames per second. Add into that a projected street price of only around $3,500 and the FX1 becomes a pretty amazing piece of gear, and definitely one that will get most prosumer and semi-pro film makers all hot and bothered. The FX1 should be available in November, and a hands-on with the press is expected tomorrow (so expect to see more news). (Thanks, David!)

Sony's $60 iPod? No way

Sony's $60 iPod? No way 11/06/2003 01:54 AM
The Register echoes our skepticism about Sony's announcement that they're planning a $60 MP3 player to compete with the iPod:Sony hasn't said that its $60 music player will feature a high capacity hard drive as the iPod does - or is as compact as the Apple machine. Hard drive prices are falling, it's true, but ultra-compact, high capacity models are still pretty expensive, and eat up much of the cost of manufacturing a hard drive-based music player. We've no doubt that Sony will offer such a device of its own, but the $60 model isn't it. That's less than half the price of a typical 128MB solid-state MP3 player, for heaven's sake. What Sony is probably planning is some sort of barebones player that can have a hard drive attached to it or something like that....

iTunes meets Sony's PSP

iTunes meets Sony's PSP 03/31/2005 03:15 PM
A small California software maker has developed a program designed to bring at least part of Apple Computer's iTunes experience to the new Sony PlayStation Portable.

The software, the latest in Information Appliance Associates' series of PocketMac tools to link handheld devices with PCs and Apple computers, allows consumers to sync music from iTunes playlists directly onto the PSP's memory cards. The software also syncs the devices with Apple's iPhoto and address book and contacts databases.

The capability is unlikely to threaten Apple's own iPod. The PSP is heavier, offers only rudimentary music-browsing capabilities, and Sony's Memory Stick storage doesn't rival the bigger iPods for capacity. But it could give dedicated gamers an extra jukebox and photo wallet in their pocket.

The Rest of Sony's USB Drives

The Rest of Sony's USB Drives 06/21/2004 12:22 PM

sony_yafd_0620.jpg image

I guess that Pocket Bit Pro 2GB USB hard drive wasn't the only USB device announced by Sony today, although the rest are these Yet Another Flash Drives, which Sony has updated across the line. The Pocket Bit U-Mini D (USM-D) are 30 percent smaller than previous models in sizes up to 256MB. The USM-F include a fingerprint sensor for security, although it only comes in a 128MB flavor. The USB-BMS is a 128MB model that includes a Memory Stick PRO slot, which would make it a bit more handy than just a generic Memory Stick PRO reader, if that's the flash memory format you're locked into you've chosen. And finally, the USM-E, which isn't really that special except that it's the largest of them all, capacity-wise, at 512MB.
