dual_coreintel.jpgIn an effort to thwart chip giant AMD’s nefarious plans to create a dual-core 64-bit chip, scrappy underdog Intel is rolling out their new chipsets early. Dual core processors, which use two CPUs on one hunk of silicon, are a way to get around the massive amounts of heat modern chips are throw out and up the overall processing power without hogging valuable motherboard real estate.

Running at 3.2GHz, the new Pentium Processor Extreme Edition 840 runs on Intel’s 955X Express chipset. Intel will then release the Pentium D in May, just in time for the dual-core Opteron launch. It’ll be interesting to see where dual-core is headed as AMD and Intel fight it out in the 64-bit space and the dual-core space in the next few months.

Intel Corp., the world’s largest maker of microprocessors and supporting logic, Friday announced product discontinues plan for its original Intel Pentium 4 Extreme Edition microprocessor that was unveiled during IDF Fall 2003.

“Market demand for the Intel Pentium 4 processor Extreme Edition supporting Hyper-Threading technology 3.20GHz with 800MHz processor system bus in mPGA478 packaging has shifted to higher performance Intel processors,” the company said it its statement sent to clients. The last product discontinuance order date for the chip is 19th of November, 2004. Last shipping dates for the chips are February 18, 2005, and July 29, 2005, for boxed and tray versions respectively.

Intel Preps New “Extreme Edition” Chips
for Socket 478/775

Intel Preps New “Extreme Edition” Chips
for Socket 478/775
07/31/2004 07:22 PM
In an attempt to strengthen product lineup Intel Corporation has included a number of new chips into its plans. The new microprocessors to be introduced later this year will sharply modify the family of Intel’s central processing units, as the new chips do not fit into the general roadmap submitted by the Santa Clara, California-based chipmaker earlier this year.

Intel on Friday sent its partners a document informing them about implementation of a new packaging system for Intel’s tray processors. In an enclosure to the document the company indicated product codes of the chips to be supplied in the new packaging. Among the list of products a number of unannounced central processing units were mentioned.

The main message Intel sends to its clients with updated chip plans is that the company wants to continue offering 90nm products for older generation Socket 478 infrastructure, but also to introduce a number of 130nm processors for the emerging Socket 775 infrastructure.
