Al-Qaeda tells Madrid: 'We will defeat all the infidels'
11 March 2005

DUBAI- Al-Qaeda's frontman in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, vowed to defeat "infidels and apostates" in response to a Madrid conference on terrorism.

"We tell the infidels and apostates, the enemies of God: whatever you do, you will be defeated. God promised us victory," read the statement from the Organization of Al-Qaeda of Jihad in the Land of Two Rivers, in a statement published on the Internet.

The authenticity of the statement could not be verified.

"How many times will the infidels and apostates meet to fight against Islam and combat the Jihad... They have other worries than to fight the Muslims and mistreat them," it said.

Technologies Threatened By INDUCE Act 07/09/2004 08:29 PM
Ernest Miller writes "Techdirt has called the INDUCE Act "broad and ridiculously dangerous" and claimed that "it would be disastrous for the tech industry." Both these claims are correct. To prove them, I've started a new feature on The Importance Of... called Hatch's Hit List. Every weekday I will endeavor to provide an example of technologies and devices that are threatened to be killed or crippled by the INDUCE Act. I welcome suggestions for examples from Techdirt readers. "

Hong Kong's Threatened Speech

Hong Kong's Threatened Speech 06/03/2004 12:13 PM

The Chinese authorities are mocking their promises of "one country, two systems," a promise they made when they got Hong Kong back from the British in 1997. As William Woo notes in this opinion piece today, four prominent talk show hots have gone off the air. Woo writes:

For the social, economic and political elites of Hong Kong, Albert Cheng's show may not have been required listening. But for them press freedom is important. One by one, the canaries in the coal mine are going silent. On this anniversary of Tiananmen Square, Hong Kong deludes itself if it imagines that it need not be concerned.
The concern there is real. I recently had an email from a friend I met while teaching in Hong Kong each fall for the past five years. He is a proud citizen of China and Hong Kong, and thought the Beijing government had meant what it said in the handover. He now fears the worst may occur. I hope China's rulers won't be that stupid. They have the power to do this. But they do not have anything like the moral authority. As they loosen their socialist economic grip on the mainland, they inevitably will have to allow genuine self-rule to emerge. Breaking promises but making Hong Kong a non-free city will not help China, but it could wreck Hong Kong, and show the world that Beijing's words are as hollow as its critics have said all along. This is a test for China. Right now, it's failing.

Japanese hostages threatened with
cannibalism in Iraq
04/09/2004 03:56 PM

The Japanese news has been suppressing the more vivid videos of the hostage situation in Iraq and continue the "we are not pulling out" line. One piece of news that even the West seems to be suppressing is that the Japanese hostages are being threatened with cannibalism.

"We tell you that three of your children have fallen prisoner in our hands and we give you two options -- withdraw your forces from our country and go home or we will burn them alive and feed them to the fighters," the group said.
Most reports are saying "killed" or "burned alive".

JibJab Threatened Over Use Of Woody

JibJab Threatened Over Use Of Woody
Guthrie Song
07/26/2004 09:08 PM
For the last few weeks, the JibJab site and their amusing political parody of Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land" has been getting passed around the net. It's well done, and deserves much of the praise it's been getting. However, it appears the folks who own the rights to Woody Guthrie's music are anything but pleased, and are demanding that JibJab stop distributing the flash movie. Their biggest complaint seems to be that "This puts a completely different spin on the song," which will "damage" the song. Anyone who can't see how utterly ridiculous this is has no job watching over Woody Guthrie's music. Guthrie, after all, is the same singer who once put the following co pyright notice on his work: "This song is Copyrighted in U.S., under Seal of Copyright # 154085, for a period of 28 years, and anybody caught singin it without our permission, will be mighty good friends of ourn, cause we don't give a dern. Publish it. Write it. Sing it. Swing to it. Yodel it. We wrote it, that's all we wanted to do." Apparently, no one told the folks at the humorless Richmond Organization.
