Giants kick butt

Giants kick butt 07/31/2004 10:30 PM

Normally I don’t post about baseball here, which is odd, considering what a huge fan of the game I am. But I had to mention this. The Card’s Matt Morris shut the Giants out last time he pitched against them, but after giving up 8 runs in the first inning tonight he’s already been replaced. From a shutout to only going 2/3 of an inning.

Ouch.

The Giants have shown an inability to hold onto a lead the last few weeks, so we’ll see if the 8-0 lead does them a bit of good, especially with Rueter on the mound.

So runs the headline on a current U.S. Navy recruiting ad. This may sum up current U.S. military philosophy pretty neatly, whatever the branch of service. No one from the Pentagon knows , or seems particularly interested in finding out, how many civilians we have killed in Iraq so far. I would guess it exceeds many times over the number who died here on September 11. One of the liabilities of conducting a military operation that is so heavily based on "death from above" is that, even with our surgical new targeting abilities, we are dangerously abstracted from the consequences below. I was put in mind of this today by this morning's Drudge Report, which contains an item about a video clip which a BarlowFriend with military connections sent me back at the end of January. I found it disturbing then and I continue to. I thought about posting it to this blog at the time, but it felt so much like war pornography that I was afraid I might be pandering. I still harbor scruples, but since this clip has just been broadcast on French television, the moral implications of "publishing" it seem less burdensome. Therefore, you will find it here. My friend described the clip as follows: "This is actual night-vision footage shot from a U.S. Apache attack helicopter engaging Iraqis, who allegedly were attempting to launch a Stinger missile at the Apache. The Apache responds with approximately one-hundred rounds of 30mm cannon fire, which is, ironically, the least powerful weapons system onboard the helicopter. The footage has been "dumbed down" to VHS resolution before conversion to MPEG, since the actual night-vision system on the Apache provides a much sharper and more detailed image." The clip speaks for itself. The three Iraqis are vaporized without much of what might be called due process. Perhaps they actually were preparing to attack the Apache, but they seem far too languid to have thought themselves in combat, particularly against something as lethal as an Apache less than a hundred feet away. Had I been in their situation, I would have been far more eager to launch and split. I can hear some of you snorting at my squeamishness. This is war, Buddy. Suck it up. But war has rules. Those who abide by them don't shoot the wounded, as we do in the clip. It's simply wrong. It's also impractical. These three Iraqis almost certainly have family members who are now bound by inarguable duty to avenge their deaths. In this video you can see us planting the seeds of terrorist retributions that will bloom for years....

File under "only in Louisiana" -- snip:
Wearing sagging or baggy pants that expose your underwear or buttocks would make you a criminal under a bill approved by a House panel Thursday. "I don't relish the idea of seeing the beginning of people's pubic hair," Westwego City Councilman Glenn Green told the House Criminal Justice Committee on Thursday. "I don't relish seeing the beginning of the crease of people's buttocks. And I don't enjoy watching young men letting their sexual organs show through their red or black silk underwear," Green said.

VoIP And Regulation

VoIP And Regulation 01/27/2004 01:44 PM
Two different looks at what's happening in the VoIP world. An analyst at Frost & Sullivan says that, despite all the negative press paid to the Telecom Act of 1996, it's created the compe titive environment necessary to push widespread VoIP adoption. He also gives plenty of credit (as he should) to Vonage for proving the case for VoIP - though, he believes they're going to have a hard time beating the larger players. It's quite possible, though, that someone will buy them out. In another article, a lawyer hits back against the claims that VoIP shouldn't be regulated by point ing out that the internet has always been regulated. I think he's using an apples and oranges comparison though - comparing the internet today with the internet in the early days. Of course, that's not what people are talking about when they talk about how an unregulated internet became successful.

Premature E-Regulation

Premature E-Regulation 12/11/2003 03:39 PM
Jeff Pulver writes that the FCC is on the verge of skipping those pesky public comments in its haste to regulate Voice over IP: it is incredibly disappointing and dismaying to me that the federal government—or states, for that matter—would even consider applying traditional phone regulations to any type of Internet communications at this early stage. Instead, they should reaffirm the longstanding U.S. policy of keeping information and Internet services unregulated—especially as technologies mature and broader phone policies are reformed. Kevin Werbach (thanks for the link!) writes in an email: As I said at the FCC VOIP hearing last week,...
