papal succession

papal succession 04/01/2005 02:22 PM
Pope John Paul II has had a heart attack. Soon, the College of Cardinals will assemble to choose his successor. Even in death, however, this pontiff will exert extraordinary control over the process, having elevated an unprecedented number of clerics to this body.

The choice of Jaime Lucas Ortega y Alamino, archbishop of Havana, would continue John Paul II's legacy of opposition to communism and totalitarianism. Another frontrunner is the socially conservative Nigerian Cardinal Fr ancis Arinze. Arinze would continue John Paul II's cultural legacy while recognizing the demographic reality of modern global Catholicism. Also mentioned as a frontrunner is Cardinal Oscar Andres Rodriguez Maradiaga of Honduras, a strong proponent of third world debt relief. Progressives would welcome the elevation of German Cardinal Walter Kasper, an advocate for religious tolerance and pluralism, or the moderate Italian Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, a frequent sta nd-in during the Holy Week ceremonies. Conservatives favor Columbian Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos. Hoyos shares the Pope's traditionalist vision of a church at odds with modernity. But the smart money, is on Dionigi Tettamanzi.

Pope's funeral will be online

Pope's funeral will be online 04/07/2005 05:48 PM
As crowds flock to the Vatican to pay their respects to Pope John Paul II in person, millions around the world are tuning in via the Internet. The Pope will largely be remembered for his influence on social issues ranging from euthanasia to AIDS, but he also earned a place in history for being the first pontiff of the computer era. It seems fitting that Friday's funeral ceremonies in St. Peter’s Basilica, which are expected to draw some 2 billion viewers, will also be available through online venues. The Vatican launched its multi-lingual website at www.vatican.va in December 1995. On World Communication Day in 2002, the Pope wrote: "We should enter this increasingly sophisticated communications network with realism and confidence. If it is used competently and responsibly, it could offer an opportunity for spreading the evangelical word." He said: "For the Church the new world of cyberspace is a summons to the great adventure of using its potential to proclaim the gospel message." Today, the website is streaming a live transmission of visitors paying their last respects to the pope. Earlier today, the Pope's last will and testament was posted. As of midday yesterday, more than 630,000 people posted messages on Poland's biggest Internet portal, www.onet.pl, with new messages being added at the rate of about 20 a minute. Poland is the Pope’s home country. Dozens of people have posted photographs of themselves posing with the pope on the website. Mobile phone text messaging also came into its own under John Paul II, whose "Thought of the Day" series -- actually brief selections from his speeches and homilies -- was launched two years ago. The spiritual messages will continue to be sent until his successor is elected in a cardinals' conclave, which is set to begin April 18.

Dudley Pope's Ramage Series

Dudley Pope's Ramage Series 06/05/2004 06:13 PM

I have read C.S. Forester's Hornblower series, Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin series, Alexander Kent's Bolitho series, and Dewey Lambdin's ongoing Alan Lewrie series, but I am still hungry so I am starting on Dudley Pope's Ramage series.

I am not buying the reprints because there are, I think, 18 books in the series and the reprints are not yet available for all the volumes.  So I am going to haunt the used bookstores like I did with the Bolitho series.  I hate reading a series out of order though.  Getting all the volumes at once wouldn't be good for me anyway since I am a book addict who can't stop without difficulty once I get going on.

Read, eat, sleep, and repeat until empty shelf.
