Followup on yesterday's editorial
Followup on yesterday's editorial
12/25/2003 11:32 AM
There's been a bunch of comment on my editorial
yesterday, most of it missing the point, widely. Candidates have to
earn my vote, and they won't if they say one thing and do another.
They don't stand a chance competing with commercial software
developers, yet that's exactly what two leading candidates are doing.
Further, the software market in America is depressed, and I think
that's partly caused by people expecting to get software for free.
A candidate who wanted to help software jobs come back to NH, a
high-tech state, could do something right now to help. No need to wait
till they're elected. And I don't agree with people who say the
candidate's job is to get elected. Sure, that's probably the way the
candidate views it. But I'm not a candidate, I'm a member of the
electorate and a taxpayer. I've yet to vote in a presidential election
that means something. I'd like to, someday. I honestly don't think
this is the year, but I'm doing my part to shift the focus to the
voters and away from 60-second TV commercials. What are you doing?
BTW, Dean is a very average candidate. His handlers ought to
tell him to answer questions frankly. He got a question about the
airplane they were using and tax dodges. He was asked if the story was
true and he said No, and didn't comment further. He said some really
nasty personal things about George Bush and John Kerry, kind of
schoolyard stuff. Not something you'd expect from a Presidential
candidate. That people are rallying around this guy gives you an idea
how desperate we are for leadership. I think we can do better, much
better.

07/01/2004 03:47 PMOK - I've now had time to cool down, rea

opinions and I even spammed by friends list with a "Boycott Apple"
plea.
So now we can get some perspective on all this.
Dashboard
appears to be little HTML panes - which indeed should enable
anyone to add anything they like. It kind of reminds me of the Bl
ogrolling Commons distribution idea - I gave to Jason DeFillippo last year.
This is what drew me to help Laszlo and their BlogBox objects and recently the Tribe Cast objects.
So believe me - I live, breath and sleep toolbars, add-ins, bookmarklets
and any sort of anything that's open and can be used for enabling
software to get used anywhere.
Certainly this is where the mobile services world is going too -
becoming an extension of our PC lives.
Alf Eaton
brings up a obvious point:
I guess the widgets won't be able to load the actual code
in from outside, unlike Macromedia Central or Laszlo widgets - so maybe there could be a
separate kind of floaty widget that could load in code pages (rather
than just data) from the net but wouldn't be able to access the
system.
Without being able to "API Into" a system, these little HTML pages
are nothing more than just - well HTML pages.
But just imagine if we had open APIs to inter-connect
modules together!
Man oh man I'm getting excited, I'd better call David Temkin and Sarah Allen. Oliver Steele too.

A mini-guide to Mac OS X for new Mini
owners
02/01/2005 08:53 PMApple finally went and released an inexpensive computer. With the
advent of the Mac mini, some Windows and Linux users who have been
curious about Mac OS X but turned off by Apple's high prices have
finally bit the bullet and ordered a mini.
Trying an unfamiliar operating system can be irritating at times.
Things are not where you expect them to be, the GUI is different, and
connecting to servers and other PCs can be frustrating. Hence the
mini-guide.
This is not intended to be a comprehensive guide to all
things OS X. Its purpose is to help those new to the operating system
do simple things, like use a Windows printer, connect to a network
share, and figure out what the key with the funny-looking squiggle on
it next to the spacebar does (or even use your PC keyboard with a
Mac). So if you're an "adder" and are feeling a bit out of sorts,
check out our guide.

As eagle-eyed
reader Thomas Shebest pointed out to me, it looks as if Apple has
removed the Mini (car) from its BMWYourIpod page. Either the Mini
isn't supported any longer, or, more likely, someone within BMW's
marketing department didn't want to dillute the Beemer brand with
their low-end cousin. Whichever -- it's still been removed from the
site.

and support for a very large amount of memory. The development kit is
fairly complete, with support for AppleScript, C, C++, Objective-C,
Java™, Perl, Python, and Ruby programming out of the box or you can
choose to use some third party Java tools such as Eclipse or

Yes, Overclocking Your Mac mini!
02/05/2005 10:16 PMFrom our friends at Engadget, and here.
Overclock your Mac mini to as much as 1.58GHz

So you’re feeling lucky with that new Mac mini of yours, are
you? But lucky enough to pop off a couple soldered jumpers on the
motherboard in order to get an extra couple hundred MHz out of the
thing? Oh really? And what if the chip doesn’t take the
overclock, and runs unstable, as they often do? (You might not know
this, but overclocking is more of a PC thing.) Well, step right
up then, Mac mini enthusiasts have sorted out how to get 1.5 and
1.58GHz out of your cute little new box—whether it wants to or
not. We can’t wait for the water cooling mods.

If
the Mac mini is going to work as a commodity PC, it needs to be sold
in commodity stores. That's probably the only real reason that the
announcement that Best Buy is going to sell the Mac mini is notable at
all (although it'd be even more notable if, say, Wal-Mart got on
board). But it raises the obvious question: does this mean Monster
Cable is going to start selling $300 Mac mini RAM upgrades?

Mac mini or Windows? Why not both?
02/01/2005 09:27 PMApples new Mac mini computer, starting at $499, is an
elegant and very affordable way for Windows users to jump the fence
into what could be a greener pasture, wrotes Mike Langberg in the
Mercury News. Thats because the Mac mini is a complete
Macintosh desktop computer inside a very tiny silver and white case,
running the current Mac OS X 10.3 Panther operating system. Apple also
provides the full sweep of its excellent software. That includes the
new iLife 05 suite with iTunes for managing music, iPhoto for
organizing photos, iMovie for editing video, iDVD for putting finished
video projects on disc and GarageBand for making music, along with the
Safari browser, an e-mail program called simply Mail and the
AppleWorks suite for word processing and other home-office
tasks. [Jan 31, 2005]
