CMU Red Team Gets More DARPA GC Help

CMU Red Team Gets More DARPA GC Help 03/14/2005 06:03 PM
According to a Duke University press release, Duke will be offering assistance to the CMU Red Team. They plan to equip both CMU robots with their "Duke Radar Object Identification Device" (DROID). The radar sensors will use a unique approach by trying to identify only above ground objects while avoiding the terrain itself. They hope this will reduce clutter in the resulting data. Duke is the latest in a long list of organizations donating time, equipment, and money toward a CMU win in the DARPA Grand Challenge.

DARPA Wants BigDog for the Army

DARPA Wants BigDog for the Army 03/14/2005 06:03 PM
A recent Guardian Unlimited article describes the latest test results of a four legged robot being built by Boston Dynamics under a DARPA contract. The company claims the internal combustion-powered, biomemetic (or biodynotic as they call) robot, named BigDog, will be able to carry a single soldier's gear where ever the soldier goes. The company says the prototype can carry up to 50kg and climb 30 degree slopes. The first military versions will be expensive but once mass-produced, a consumer version would be much cheaper, perhaps priced "similar to a car". The company is still not releasing photos of the robot but a Wired article from last year includes some drawings.

DARPA Awards FALCON HCV Contracts

DARPA Awards FALCON HCV Contracts 01/23/2004 04:14 PM
According to a DefenseLINK article, DARPA has awarded contracts for phase one of the FALCON hypersonic cruise vehicle (HCV) development program. That's FALCON as in Force Application and Launch from the Continental United States. The FALCON will be an autonomous robot plane that can take off from a conventional runway in the US and strike targets up to 9,000 miles away with its 12,000 lbs weapon payload in 2 hours or less traveling at speeds of Mach 6 or higher. Eventually, a single, reusable robot plane will do the whole job. But because DARPA anticipates the need to blow up a few things before the final "Version 2" vehicle is available, their plan (PDF format) calls for developing a "Version 1" FALCON that's made in two parts: a rocket powered small launch vehicle (SLV) that will accelerate a Common Aero Vehicle (CAV) into low Earth orbit (LEO). The autonomous CAV will then glide towards the target at hypersonic speeds.

DARPA Grand Challenge PR Problems

DARPA Grand Challenge PR Problems 10/30/2003 11:57 PM
The DARPA Grand Challenge has generated a lot of interest and there are now over 100 teams preparing robots. Most of them are in for a shock when they find out DARPA has decided that only 20 robots will be allowed to enter. An editorial over at mobilerobotics.org has more details as well as transcript of a letter DARPA sent to one of the Grand Challenge Teams about the issue.

Darpa Wants Replacement Arms by 2009

Darpa Wants Replacement Arms by 2009 04/11/2005 11:02 AM

luke_arm.jpgThere are plenty of reasons to hate our government, from low quality cheese handouts to an embarrassing lack of prisoner-fueled gladiatorial events, but at least they have no problem telling scientists to stop sucking the creme filling from grants and start building robot arms. Darpa, the funds-holding financier of many military project, has put out a challenge to modern prostheticists to build a fake arm with, "enough finesse to pick up a raisin or to write in longhand. It needs to be sensitive enough for the wearer to demonstration to do day-to-day tasks in the dark. And the limb will have to be strong enough to lift 60 pounds at a time."
