Install XAMPP for easy, integrated

Install XAMPP for easy, integrated
development
12/17/2004 06:35 PMOpen source stacks such as XAMPP from Apache Friends are simplifying
open source development by making it easier to write and distribute
applications in a stable and standardized environment. Traditionally,
AMPP -- Apache, MySQL, PHP, and Perl -- have all been installed and
configured as separate products. The trend of combining them into
integrated middleware stacks promises to make open source development
more competitive with J2EE application development, at least for
low-end application
XAMPP
XAMPP
02/01/2005 09:08 PMWhen it comes to AMP (Apache; MySQL; Perl, Python, or PHP)
installers, we at Gadgetopia started with FoxServ. That project kind of
died, so a few weeks ago, we touted the benefits of Sokkit.
That product, while very good, wasn't free, which was a drag (though,
at $24.95, it's still a heck of a deal).
In the comments to the entry on Sokkit, someone mentioned XAMPP. I've
been playing with that tool for a week or so, and I've settled on this
as my AMP platform of choice.
XAMPP is free, from an organization named "Apache Friends." Like the
other tools, it installs a host of open-source-ish apps, but —
unlike the others — it's not just for Windows. XAMPP comes in
Linux and Solaris versions as well.
XAMPP
for Windows comes in three versions: Windows installer,
self-extracting executable, and traditional zip file. I got the zip,
and I recommend you do too. Extract it to "C:\xampp," then run two
BAT files that install Apache and MySQL as services, and you're done
without any behind-the-scenes, installer voodoo — everything is
nice and straightforward, meaning XAMPP should uninstall as easily as
it "installed" (corresponding BAT files are provided to uninstall the
services).
XAMPP installs with a bevy of tools. I haven't played with this
all, but from the extracted directory structure, there's AMP, Webalizer (a Web log
analyzer), MercuryMail
(an SMTP server), FileZillaFTP (an FTP
server), and phpMyAdmin (a
Web-based MySQL client). Additionally, XAMPP has "add-ons" for Python, Tomcat, Cocoon, and Perl (though it looks
to me that Perl is in the default install anyway).
So, there you have it. XAMPP is what I'm using exclusively now for
my Windows development environments, and I'm thrilled with it. It's
very above-board — all the pieces to the system are laid out
nicely, and they all install "in the open" giving me an AMP
installation in which I have complete confidence. Nicely done.

XAMPP is a very easy to install Apache
distribution for Linux, Solaris, Windows, and Mac
OS X. The package includes the Apache Web server,
MySQL, PHP, Perl, an FTP server, and phpMyAdmin.
Changes:
This version contains up-to-date versions of MySQL (4.1.11), PHP
(4.3.11 and 5.0.4), phpMyAdmin (2.6.1-pl3), and also Norwegian and
Italian language support.

XAMPP, an Apache Distribution
03/14/2005 05:30 PM"XAMPP is a collection of free software for installing and using the
Apache Web server. Basically, it is an Apache distribution that
includes the Apache Web server, MySQL, PHP, Perl an FTP server and
phpMyAdmin. XAMPP is available for Linux, Solaris and Windows.
According to the Apache Friends Web site, "The philosophy behind XAMPP
is to build an easy-to-install distribution for developers to get into
the world of Apache." Story

LAMP made easy with XAMPP
06/24/2005 06:58 PMThe LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Perl) software stack is emerging
as a popular and cost-effective Web development platform. This is
understandable given that it comprises a free operating system, Web
server, database, and scripting language. However, a problem with
having a number of separate open source components is integration. The
XAMPP project aims to eliminate this problem. With XAMPP, there is no
reason for developers to skip over an open source solution when
considering Web development platforms.

EA Sports is showing off screenshots of 'Madden: Next Gen,'
the working name for the version of Madden for a "next generation"
console. We have it on good word (and really, it's sort of obvious,
timing-wise) that it's a live render of a shot on the Xbox 360. ESPN
will be running a 30 second clip of the game during the NFL draft
coverage on April 23rd.
One thing is already certain about this upcoming console war:
Microsoft is making a lot more noise than anybody else. (Thanks,
Lumpia!)

Tiger Mail screenshot and user interface
Tiger Mail screenshot and user interface
03/30/2005 05:35 PMI find the
screenshot of Mail
for OS X 10.4 fascinating.
The first thing I notice is that the mailboxes aren’t in a
drawer anymore, which I think is a good thing.
A few other things:
1. The toolbar background appears to be some sort of gradient. As in a
metal window, there is no line between the top of the window and the
toolbar buttons. But it’s not metal. It looks new. (The
screenshot of
system preferences has the same look.)
2. The toolbar icons appear to be embedded in some kind of new button.
Whether it’s a new button style or just a look for the Mail
toolbar icons I can’t tell from the screenshot.
3. The mailbox list has a background color. This may or may not be
customizable—you can’t tell from the screenshot.
It’s a good guess that, if customizable, the color shown is the
default color. This is interesting because I can’t think of any
other source lists from Apple that have colored backgrounds by
default.
4. The vertical splitview dividing the mailboxes from the rest of the
window is not a standard splitview. (Unless it’s new in OS X
10.4.) (Actually, I’m just assuming it’s a splitview.)
Note how the apparent thickness of the divider is zero. The horizontal
splitview looks more like a standard splitview—though I’ve
squinted at it a bit and started to wonder if that’s true.
5. I don’t see a status bar. (It could be that, like Safari, the
status bar is hidden by default. Or it could be that it was added
after this screenshot was taken. Or maybe there just isn’t one.
I don’t know.)
So... what do you think?
(Note: remember to respect any and all non-disclosure agreements.
We’re just looking at public screenshots. And these screenshots
may or may not resemble the final, shipping versions.)
