Social Tool for Enterprise Symposium

Social Tool for Enterprise Symposium 06/08/2004 05:02 PM
Social Tools for Enterprises Symposium in London. Now that we have the agenda sorted I am happy to announce the 1st, London,

which I am organising with the support of KM Cluster. We think this is a great opportunity to start showing people that social tools (both people tools and software tools) are ready for prime time and deliver bottom line benefits to enterprises.

The event will be held on Monday 12th July at the Bloomsbury Square Training Centre. We've got a great list of people leading sessions which we think will be a cut above the usual chalk & talk conference fare. We really want a conversation to emerge from this event which will help to enlighten people interested in social tools but unsure how to put them to best use in their own contexts.

So we have:

Paolo and I will also be there.

I think it has the potential to be a great event and a great day I hope that you will come and join us. Please tell all your friends!

[Curiouser and curiouser!]

Looks like a great lineup. I especially pleased Phil is going over - and that Marc Eisenstadt is involved!  But why no Matt?

T-Mobile Blackberry Crippled?

T-Mobile Blackberry Crippled? 12/25/2004 05:18 PM

tmobile_blackberry7230.jpg imageIt has been called to my attention that T-Mobile's Blackberry users may be getting the big stinky shaft when it comes to using third-party apps. There's extensive discussion on the topic at HowardForums and PDAStreet, but the message seems pretty clear: customers aren't getting what they're paying for, and they're mighty peeved. The issue seems to stem from the fact that TMO users on the $5 WAP plan were working around that plan's limitations and handing themselves unlimited access; TMO's "fix"—apparently blocking everything other than port 80 WAP traffic—may have filled the $5 plan loophole, but it also seems to have crippled the access of Blackberry users, restricting them to the built-in web and mail apps. Potential Blackberry buyers beware. (Thanks, Scott!)

Earthlink Wireless Gets BlackBerry 7250

Earthlink Wireless Gets BlackBerry 7250 04/13/2005 08:26 PM

Earthlink Wireless is now offering the BlackBerry 7250, probably most notable for being one of the few BlackBerries with Bluetooth. It's still weird to think of Earthlink as a wireless carrier, but I was checking it out to see whose services they are reselling (it still doesn't say, although it's got to be Sprint or Verizon since the 7250 is listed as CDMA) and they've apparently been doing it to some extent since 2000. They didn't really get serious about it until this year, though, when they partnered with SK-Telecom.

In fact, since Verizon just got the 7250 a couple of months ago, I'm betting they resell Verizon. This post is short on facts but rich in the process of discovery.

T-Mobile Screwing Blackberry Customers

T-Mobile Screwing Blackberry Customers 12/24/2004 12:46 PM

I got an urgent e-mail today from a dedicated reader and I want to share the information he passed to me. Be sure to check out the complete story on his website.

"Todd-I'm currently covering how T-Mobile has cut off Blackberry users from full Internet access on one of my sites:

www.tinyscreenfuls.com

Basically, they've stripped paying customers of service that used to work just fine, with no notice or explanation. In fact, they've admitted that they didn't intend to affect Blackberry users this way.

But a month later, nothing has changed. Most companies don't understand how important blogs and web opinion have become. They're pretty clueless (Kryptonite, etc.). But I know that there is power in the community of bloggers and writers to get things done."

Go read the full story and if you can help out drop a link to his site. If your a Blackberry user then get out their and complain to T-Mobile. As I have dealt with T-Mobile quite a bit you have to work through about 4 levels of Customer service before you can get to someone that has a clue. Good Hunting. [www.tinyscreenfuls.com]

Will airtexting BlackBerry become the

airtext

Smart Mobs
Wave Messaging

From the company that pioneered text messaging, picture messaging and multimedia messaging, comes new innovation - Wave Messaging, or Light Messaging, according to a Nokia press release

By waving the Nokia 3220 camera phone from side to side, the LED lights of the Nokia Xpress-on FunShell light up to "write" a message that appears to float in mid-air.

Related articles on airtexting-type technologies:

-- In March 2003, the WSJ reported from CeBIT about a phone called Kurv, made by Kyocera Wireless Corp which featured airtexting: "The company believes airtexti ng will be one of it's most popular features, especialy in night clubs. To airtext, you type in a text like 'call me' then wave it back and forth in the air. As the phone moves, a row of blinking red lights along the top of the phone leaves the phrase trailing behind it."

-- A company called Wildseed actually tested airtexti ng with teenagers.

If they made an airtexting enabled BlackBerry, I wonder if they would allow them in Congress. With the massiv e penetration of BlackBerries, it would be like a chorus of Hecklebots. Anyway, I want one. Forget night clubs, imaging having one in the audience during talks.

Ogo Vs. Blackberry

Ogo Vs. Blackberry 09/15/2004 03:20 PM

ogo_vs_blackberry.jpg imageSo the AT&T Wireless Ogo isn't coming out today - I think we can chalk that up to an overanxious rep - but it should be out soonish, from what I can gather. In the meantime, check out this comparison shot. It's a little bigger than I was hoping, but if it really just costs $100 I'm not going to complain about a little extra size. Besides, that might make the keyboard more useful.

And if AT&T lets people install their own software on it, it's got an even better chance to give Danger a run for the Sidekick money. I have my fingers crossed, which made typing this really hard.

BlackBerry Thumb

BlackBerry Thumb 02/01/2005 09:09 PM

blackberry_thumb.jpg imageFor now, you can file the 'Blackberry Thumb' issue along side the folder where you would have kept your worries about cellphone radiation, had you not forgotten them since that tumor pressed too firmly into your hippocampus. Sure, dinking around on thumbboards probably isn't exactly the optimal use of your opposable digits, but it's likely no worse than the dreaded "Nintendo Thumb" that struck down a whole generation of good typists, who now are cursed with occasional involuntary run-ons of 'ABABSELECTSTART.' Until this doctor in the UK can actually point to a documented case of someone suffering from tendentious, I think I'll keep promoting the thumbboard as one of the best mobile input devices we have ABABSELECTSTART available. Blackberry rising

Blackberry rising 07/29/2004 01:16 PM

Om Malik writes......

Amdist all the hoopla around Motorola' new products, one news which got little mention was the deal struck between Moto and Blackberry for MPx. By now, Blackberry has signed-up most major phone makers, and has worked out plans to embed its software/service on all sorts of SmartPhone OS platforms. We are looking at a defactor wireless email platform? Perhaps!

But this clearly is not good news for well, Good Technology! Motorola's MPx was supposedly going to be an exclusive Good deal, but I guess not. And those smart VCs who have pumped in nearly $250 million into wireless email must be reaching for their large box of Tums! Good alone accounts for $146 million of the total.

My theory on this is, that by launching an aggresive marketing/hype campaign, Good galvanized those meek canadians into action. Had that not happened, RIM probably would have kept doing what they were doing - selling devices and service and growing at a nice Canadian pace. Threatened, they went on and signed up all these people. Voila! They are in good place, Good in not!

[gigaom]

I totally agree with Om.

This is an example where patents and VCs have really FUDed the landscape and all of a sudden a sleeping Tiger has been clued in and appears to grok it now.

I just hate the concept of the mini-keyboard being patented - but let's just get on with making sure it's baked into all sorts of devices - as my chubby fingers will NEVER learn to thumb type, graffitti or whatever.

I'm a QWERTY keyboard guy - till I die - I got no choice about it. And there's no way in hell I'm typing SMS messages with a phone pad....

Anyway - congrats to Blackberry - not let's get on with it.
