Surpass 7 Million in 2009
07/09/2004 03:10 AMBy the end of 2009, there will be more than 7 million subscribers
worldwide using broadband wireless services based on 802.16REVd
technology, the fixed flavor of WiMAX, according to Untethering
Broadband: WiMAX, 802.20, and Others, a new report from Parks
Associates. On June 24, 2004, the IEEE approved 802.16REVd as IEEE
802.16-2004, and the final edited standard will be published in late
July. The new standard should encourage further development and
innovation in fixed broadband wireless solutions, according to Parks
Associates. [PRWEB Jul 9, 2004]

01/09/2004 09:58 PMEE Times:
Verizon to spend $1 billion on 3G CDMA2000 EV-DO rollout. Let's
see, $1B divided by $80/month divided by, say, 5 years is over 200,000
subscribers. For a network which cannot support voice, that's a big
gamble (unless they have a cheap upgrade path to EV-DV).

US going digital in 2009
US going digital in 2009
09/20/2004 10:44 AMUS Senator John McCain is attempting to get $1 billion in federal
funding for consumers to help them move over to digital signals.
Although currently a proposal, the legislation could help people move
over to digital TV. Currently, it is proposed that broadcasters switch
of the analogue signal and go all digital in 2009 if the 85% threshold
is met. Although many US broadcasters currently send digital signals,
very few Americans own digital enabled sets due to the prohibitively
high cost.
The funding is thought to be aimed at devices to allow Analogue to
Digital conversion for older TVs. McCain wishes to help low income
families who would be badly affected by the switch. The legislation
views the digital switch primarily as a technological advance, rather
than a commercial move for hardware makers. "Consumers who rely
on over-the-air television, particularly those of limited economic
means, should be assisted."
The switch to digital means better quality for viewers as well as much
more; analysts suggest that the revenue from selling off the analogue
signal spectrum could be in the billions for the government. The
switch also allows the freeing of space for better emergency services
communication - a issue raised after the problems with 9/11. The US is
following a similar move planned in the UK, who will be switching off
the old signal in
2007.
Freeview, the UK free digital service, works via a
set top box. It offers ~30 free channels, and is currently installed
in
4 million homes.

Turns Out 2009 Will Be The Year Of 3G
05/04/2004 12:21 PMFor each of the past three years, someone has come out with a
prediction that the current year would be "The Year of 3G" when third
generation mobile phones and services would really gain user
acceptance. Every year that's proven to be a very bad prediction.
This year, is no different, as back in March people were once again
saying that
2004 would
be "The Year of 3G". Of course, there's just not that much 3G to
go around (you're better off in Asia than elsewhere, but it's still
mostly a 2G and 2.5G world). So, now, it turns out that it's not
2004, but
maybe
it's 2009 that will be the real year of 3G. At least
that's what the latest predictions from Analysys Research seem to
suggest. This isn't all that surprising. People in the industry
always like to assume that customer adoption will be nearly
instantaneous, and reality always lags behind. As we said a month
ago, maybe we should just declare this the
decade of
3G to cover all our bases. The other idea is to declare 3G dead
(something some of the WiMax hypers in the press might actually do) -
which seems to be the universal sign that a wireless technology is
about to catch on.

There are plenty of reasons to hate our government, from low
quality cheese handouts to an embarrassing lack of prisoner-fueled
gladiatorial events, but at least they have no problem telling
scientists to stop sucking the creme filling from grants and start
building robot arms. Darpa, the funds-holding financier of many
military project, has put out a challenge to modern prostheticists to
build a fake arm with, "enough finesse to pick up a raisin or to write
in longhand. It needs to be sensitive enough for the wearer to
demonstration to do day-to-day tasks in the dark. And the limb will
have to be strong enough to lift 60 pounds at a time."
