01/11/2004 11:16 AMPeople of a certain age mine will remember Prince Norodom Sihanouk as the
incumbent leader of a neutral and relatively peaceful Cambodia, before
the war in Vietnam spilled over Cambodia's borders, leading to the
rise of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge, the fall of the Cambodian
government, and the killing fields.
Now Sihanouk is an expat
king in his eighties, writing a blog by hand
with his queen, from France. Sources: Stuart Hughes, The

Copyright Law Is The Killing Fields Of
Culture
Copyright Law Is The Killing Fields Of
Culture
04/13/2004 01:51 AMIt seems that a day can't go by without more examples of just how
problematic our copyright setup is. J.D. Lasica has written up a
great article talking about a guy who was running a nice little
company that took movies and made two minute trailers advertising the
films, which he would then offer to online retailers to help promote
the movies. The lawyers at Disney, however, could only see the fact
that someone who wasn't them appeared to be making money on their
content. Even though his work was
helping them sell more, they
sued him
for $110 million and eventually forced him to shut down the
company. Since he was first sued, he went out and created a
documentary of other artists who "have been threatened, sued, fined,
and put out of work in the name of copyright." These are all cases
where people, in an attempt to be creative and expand our culture,
were instead shut down by copyright laws that have clearly gone too
far.

Fire Rages Near Iraq Oil Fields (AP)
09/03/2004 01:37 PMAP - Firefighters fought a massive oil pipeline fire in northern Iraq
on Friday, after insurgents detonated explosives in what authorities
described as one of the worst sabotage attacks in the region since the
U.S.-led invasion.

Are supergiant oil fields declining
faster than replacement?
04/09/2004 03:57 PMNYT. Oman's oil production
decline on its large fields couldn't be stopped by new
technology. This is another indicator that
Hubert's
peak may be correct.
Oman's oil problems are relatively recent. Annual production
rose from 1980 to 1997, when the 35-year-old Yibal field began to
decline. Two engineering papers written last year by Petroleum
Development Oman officials show that production in Yibal has fallen at
an annual rate of about 12 percent for six years; that is more than
twice the normal rate of 5 percent in the region.
Perhaps more ominously for the world's oil outlook, he added
that the failure of Shell's horizontal drilling technology in Oman
suggested that even advanced extraction techniques "won't bring back
the good old days." In the case of the Yibal field, for example,
Shell and Omani oil engineers and auditors have expressed concerns
that a technique Sir Philip said would recover more oil not only did
not do so, but also increased the amount of water in the extracted oil
to as much as 90 percent of the total volume, increasing production
costs.

Weird-o SMS behaviour
02/05/2005 09:13 PMOuti sent me yesterday a sweet text message about mice. True to the
nature of these beasts, that SMS started multiplying: for some reason,
T-Mobile (yes, I'm in Germany) has decided to deliver that message to
me eleven times within the past 24 hours. Even though it has been
sent only once.
It seems that every SMS sent from Finland is replaced by this same
SMS message - so if you've tried to contact me, I have only seen a
message about a mouse from Outi. Sorry. You gotta try and resend, if
you had anything to say (or just email me).

weird referer
weird referer
01/07/2004 04:31 PMRecently (but I just noticed it today) I started getting HTTP
referers that are a variation of the following:
"XXXX:+++++++++++++++++++++++" (the number of plus signs varies). A google search with
appropriate terms quickly turned up discussions like this one
that suggest that the referer is someone using an anonymizer or
internet security product of some kind. Without that information it
smells like an attempt at an exploit of some kind... but of what kind
(and if so, I've never heard of it)?
Anyone knows about this? Has anyone else seen it? I'm curious.
:)
