LucidLink Offers Free Small Office
Security Package
04/18/2005 02:47 PM It's pretty extraordinary when there's competition for giving away
security: On the small-office/home-office (SOHO) end of the market for
Wi-Fi security products, there's an increasing trend to just give away
products that can help very small number of users in the hopes that
those users then adopt the for-fee products when they grow in scale or
need. But it's a very nice development for SOHO warriors, to be sure.
LucidLink joins this trend by dropping the price of their three-user
package for secure WLAN connections from $99 down to zero. My guess is
that it was a hard sell for that user category, and that becomes a
great test tool for offices considering LucidLink. They can hook up
this three-user version as a test before buying a multi-seat license.
The three-user limit is simultaneous users. More can be registered in
the system. LucidLink is a locally hosted 802.1X server package that
uses proprietary client software for Windows 2000 and XP to make the
connection. The server software requires Windows 2000 (any edition),
XP, or Windows Server 2003. The next step up is a 10-user version of
LucidLink for $449....

WPA for Free under Windows 2000
WPA for Free under Windows 2000
02/12/2004 11:20 AMWSC releases free client for Windows 2000 that supports Wi-Fi
Protected Access's pre-shared key mode: Given that Microsoft hasn't
offered what Wireless Security Corporation estimates is 20 percent of
all Windows users worldwide access to the robust WPA encryption
protocol, they've released their own client for free. Their client
offers just WPA-PSK (pre-shared key), which is the mode used in homes
and small offices without back-end authentication servers -- but it's
still much, much better than plain old WEP, the original broken
encryption method for Wi-Fi. WSC offers hosted 802.1X for Windows XP
and 2000. This move of releasing a free WPA-PSK client is quite
generous, as it provides them only some publicity, and doesn't lock
anyone into their service offering, as WPA-PSK can be used with any
WPA-supporting access point. (WSC's press release is a model of a good
technical release: it explains the problem reasonably, without hype,
and with accurate details that educate the reader. It presents its
solution fairly, as well.)...

Orb Networks Client Now Free

Just a
quick blip to mention that Orb Networks has changed their model for
their Orb streaming media platform, which allows you to send your
music, video, and other content from your Windows machine to any
portable device with a web connection. Now, instead of paying for Orb,
you'll get the client for free, and the company plans to generate
revenue through hosted content partnerships (hoping that you'll
download partners' content via their client, presumably).
However it works out, it's good news for you, as long as they stay
in business.

RADIUS without Tears from LucidLink
RADIUS without Tears from LucidLink
06/08/2004 01:38 PMInterLink introduces cheap, easy-to-administer, single-minded
authentication server with WPA and 802.1X/EAP-TLS support: RADIUS is
expensive and complicated. Small businesses either can't afford the
server software or the staff to support it. InterLink is trying to
reduce the cost of providing a secure Wi-Fi network by introducing its
LucidLink client and server software that has one. Unlike robust,
multi-purpose RADIUS servers, LucidLink authenticates in one way for
one purpose. LucidLink's client software manages certificates used
with EAP-TLS, the most secure method of out-of-band messaging for the
authentication portion of joining a Wi-Fi network using 802.1X. With
EAP-TLS, the certificate on the client machine assures the server of
the correct identity. LucidLink uses WPA for keying material. It
supports certain releases of Windows XP and 2000. LucidLink is the
flip side of the coin from Wireless Security Corporation's
out-of-house solution. WSC runs its RADIUS system as a managed service
over the Internet, charging $4 to $5 per user per month. InterLink's
server will cost $449 for 10 users and a lower per-user cost for
higher quantities, and requires a Windows 2000 or 2003 server. The
client software is nominally free, but the license for users resides
on the server side....

LucidLink Turns Humble Office into
Secure Enterprise
LucidLink Turns Humble Office into
Secure Enterprise
07/16/2004 05:03 PMInterLink wants every office to have affordable wireless security:
InterLink introduced LucidLink Wireless Security several weeks ago to
connect smaller offices with enterprise-grade wireless encryption. The
company knows how to build RADIUS and other authentication servers,
and it saw the large gap between pre-shared secrets--subject to social
engineering and potential cracking--and servers that require IT
expertise and cost tens of thousands of dollars. In an interview with
InterLink's president and CEO Mike Klein and vice president of
marketing Wayne Burkan, they laid out how this new offering might
appeal to the hundreds of thousands of businesses without information
technology departments but who would benefit from a secure,
login-based wireless network. LucidLink is a small RADIUS server that
has a simple front end, less complicated than, say, setting up
calendar entries in Outlook. It requires a special client to be
installed on computers. The client requires a reboot after
installation--in the current version--and that's the most onerous task
in gaining access to the network. An administrator uses a simple
program to approve users as they request access via the client
software. It's an option-free package that meets a high bar of
wireless network security through unique WPA master session keys per
user. Klein explained that InterLink's primary business remains on the
high-end. One ISP they work with, for instance, has 6.5 million users
that authenticates using 13 AAA (authenticiation, authorization,
accounting) servers from InterLink. The firm works with AT&T,
Swisscom, and other giants, and has their software incorporated by
firms like HP and Siemens and repackaged by Infobox into hardware
appliances. "Security itself is fairly complex today in the enterprise
marketplace," Klein said. The idea behind LucidLink is that it "brings
a consumer-oriented ease of use model." He likened it to a garage-door
opener, which masks a fair amount of wireless technology with a single
button. "We're bringing enterprise-level security down into the
small-to-medium business market" with the ease of use experience
required by the small business, Klein said, calling LucidLink "RADIUS
for the rest of us." LucidLink takes the management of this network
away from an IT manager and puts it "on the desktop of an
administrator, like an office manager or a receptionist," or the same
person who handles cell phone numbers, access codes and badges, or
building access. Klein acknowledges that WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access)
provides a higher bar of security, but says that pre-shared keys
aren't useful...
