HOWTO: Make a file sharing system. 06/22/2005 01:58 AM
The RIAA and many other local facsimiles in nations outside the USA are aggressively persuing file sharers. More and more files on the file sharing services available are fakes; they do not contain what they portend to be, or contain only 5 to 7 seconds on a loop. Leechers reduce the average download speed considerably. Some manage to circumvent most of these problems but do not offer satisfactory search. In short, there are plenty of reasons why it's time to introduce Yet Another File Sharing Service. This time, let's do it right. Read on for a detailed description of how solve all the problems that current file sharing systems are struggling with.

Screenshot The Shezhu Resource Sharing System is an application for scheduling and booking shared resources such as rooms and equipment. The client only needs a modern Web browser. It has a user friendly point and click interface, visual filters for making block/repeat bookings, concurrent users and double booking prevention, allows local site customization, and supports configurable academic term/semester blocks.
Changes:
A more powerful date mapping syntax. Academic blocks (term, semester, and session) are created dynamically. A new session/year block. Minor bugfixes and enhancements. The build and runtime requirements have been simplified so that a first time installation can be up and running more easily. Other maintenance improvements resulting in support for additional browsers (specifically Konqueror and Opera).

Japanese File Sharing System Creator
Arrested For Copyright Violation

Japanese File Sharing System Creator
Arrested For Copyright Violation
05/10/2004 04:31 AM
For all the complaints we have about bad laws in the US, at least (so far) we've been able to keep from declaring file sharing software (on its own) illegal. That's not the case in Japan, where the creator of a supposedly anonymous file sharing system ha s been arrested for "abetting the violation of the Copyright Law." Apparently, the fact that such software has plenty of legitimate uses as well doesn't matter. Shouldn't they also be arresting the creators of just about any other technology that can be used to break the law? In this case, they say it made sense because they have evidence that two people used his file sharing program to download illegal files. I think there's plenty of evidence that computers have been used in crimes. They should be arresting everyone who created computers. Plus the internet is full of criminals these days - so the folks who started the internet clearly to be thrown in jail. Just think how many crimes have been committed by people in cars! A pen can be used for both forgeries and to stab someone. Someone ought to be locked up for that. The list is endless. Clearly, no technology at all should be created and anyone who created any technology deserves to be in jail.

Is Intel Building Copy Protected
Proprietary File Sharing System Into
Chips?

Is Intel Building Copy Protected
Proprietary File Sharing System Into
Chips?
03/30/2005 05:20 PM
This Reuters story is quite confusing, so hopefully more details are forthcoming that will explain what's really happening. The story claims that Intel has teamed up with media giant Bertelsmann to build chips that are "compatible with" Bertelsmann's new file sharing app. Bertelsmann announced that application last week, and it sounds basically like any other entertainment industry-approved file sharing app. It's not really about file sharing, but creating a broadcast distribution mechanism with a tollbooth. So why is Intel getting involved? That's not clear at all. Does this mean the file sharing system, as currently developed, doesn't work on Intel chips? That seems highly unlikely. What would it be working on? Does it mean that Intel is re-architecting its chips to include this proprietary copy-protected file sharing system at the chip level? That also seems highly unlikely (or, if true, highly disturbing). Intel (and others) make the chips on which all different kinds of applications can run. They shouldn't be favoring one type of application or building it in at the chip level. If anything, this is probably just a marketing relationship, where Intel may be tossing in a bit of help with designing the software. However, it still seems like a strange announcement.

Chillits DJ sets online

Chillits DJ sets online 12/28/2004 03:08 PM
David Pescovitz: Music Images Chillits04Chillits is an ambient music outdoor festival that takes place every fall in Northern California. It's sort of a scaled-down version of the UK's Big Chill. All of the DJ sets from Chillits 2004 are now online for our, er, blistening pleasure. The mixes by my musical mentors, San Francisco's Nick Philip and DF Tram, are just stunning. And yes, the Brian Behlendorf who also spun a really beautiful set is in fact the co-inventor of Apache. I have Brian to thank for turning me on to post-Eno ambient when we both interned at Wired in 1993. What DF Tram says about his own set pretty much applies across the Chillits board: this music is "best enjoyed horizontally." Link
