Boston-area bank suggestion? (Bank of
America is not dog-friendly)
06/22/2005 02:23 AM

My bank has been purchased, for about the fifth time.  Currently it is called "Bank of America."  None of the previous changes of ownership or name bothered me but this time the new color scheme came with "no dogs allowed" signs in the front of every branch office.  I'm not sure that I can stomach 0.2% interest if I can't have a dog at my side to provide some comfort as inflation and corporate looters erode my turbine-powered helicopter fund.  Anyone have a suggestion for a dog-friendly bank in the Boston area?

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) Central Bank Research Hub
http://www.bis.org/cbhub/ind ex.htm

The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has established this facility to promote the search and dissemination of economic research published by central banks.
The facility is built on the principle of crawlers that search research content from selected central banks websites on a daily basis. The Research Hub e-mail alert will keep its users informed about new research published on any of the websites of the participating central banks. Subscribers to the free e-mail alert can select specific topics and reception frequencies to keep their e-mail volumes under control.
The BIS hopes that this facility will make research work on central banking topics more widely accessible to the central banks and the academic community at large. This has been added to Research Resources Subject Tracer™ Information Blog. This will be added to Academic Resources 2004-05 Internet MiniGuide.

Microsoft Licenses Analog Anti-rip Technology

CD copy-protection specialist Macrovision is to work with Microsoft to ensure their respective DRM and anti-rip technologies are interoperable, the two companies said this week. Sounds straightforward enough, but the deal runs deeper. Microsoft agreed to license a number of Macrovision's patents, in particular those relating to analogue copy protection technology and more recent extensions to that system that cover video-on-demand, pay-per-view content and support for the US 'broadcast flag', which determines whether consumers will be able to record digital TV broadcasts.

Foiling Session Hijacking Attempts

Foiling Session Hijacking Attempts 08/12/2004 02:34 AM
Let's face it: every minute of every day, someone, somewhere, is patrolling the Web looking for sites to hack. ASP.NET developers must constantly be on their guard to ensure attempted hacks can't be successful. That means constraining and validating user input, accessing databases securely, storing sensitive data securely, and generally writing secure code that repels rather than accommodates these malevolent hackers.

Jakob Nielsen: Attempts At Web Personalization Have Failed
htt p://theage.com.au/articles/2004/06/07/1086460217133.html

User experience expert Jakob Nielsen, co-founder with Don Norman of the Nielsen Norman Group, decries the poor search capabilities within Web sites. "A lot of Web sites have search that doesn't prioritize results well and you couldn't make any sense of the results even if they were in the right order. We have relatively good search engines for the Internet but the sad thing is, within the Web sites the search engines have not really improved." The Nielsen Norman Group helps organizations design "human-centered" products and services by examining all aspects of the end-user's interaction with a company's services and products. Nielsen complains: "Web sites are also pretty bad at predicting what you want -- all the attempts at personalization have mainly failed." When a searcher's results are shown on a small display, the system's ability to predict what the searcher wants is extremely important, as is its ability to describe things concisely. Nielsen also thinks Web designers need to spend more energy find constructive ways to use this bandwidth: "We're now at a point where it's possible for many users to watch decent-quality video over the Internet. That's a technology question. But this then begs the question, what are you going to use it for in terms of content? Just because you can do it, doesn't mean it's a good idea to do it."
