The Economics of Open Source Hijacking and Declining Quality of Digital Information Resources: A Case for Copyleft by Andrea Ciffolilli
http://opensourc e.mit.edu/papers/ciffolili.pdf

Abstract:
The economics of information goods suggest the need of institutional intervention to address the problem of revenue extraction from investments in resources characterized by high fixed costs of production and low marginal costs of reproduction and distribution. Solutions to the appropriation issue, such as copyright, are supposed to guarantee an incentive for innovative activities at the price of few vices marring their rationale. In the case of digital information resources, apart from conventional inefficiencies, copyright shows an extra vice since it might be used perversely as a tool to hijack and privatise collectively provided open source and open content knowledge assemblages. Whilst the impact of hijacking on open source software development may be uncertain or uneven, some risks are clear in the case of open content works. The paper presents some evidence of malicious effects of hijacking in the Internet search market by discussing the case of The Open Directory Project. Furthermore, it calls for a wider use of novel institutional remedies such as copyleft and Creative Commons licensing, built upon the paradigm of copyright customisation.

Microsoft launches beta of digital music
download service
09/01/2004 06:57 PM
Xeni Jardin: MSN Music launched today. From a CBS Marketwatch report:
Microsoft on Wednesday unveiled details of a new service for downloading digital music, placing it squarely in competition with Apple's rival iTunes music service. Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft will launch a preview version of its new MSN Music service tomorrow that will allow users to legally download songs mostly for 99 cents each. The service will also make entire albums available, the majority of which will cost $9.99, the company said. Microsoft's push into the arena for downloadable music trails Apple's hugely successful iPod digital music player and its own iTunes music service. Apple also charges 99 cents for each song downloaded through iTunes.

06/08/2004 12:04 PM
In a major step in its efforts to deliver subscription-based music and video content for portable and networked devices, the company has unveiled the next version of its Windows Media digital rights management (DRM) software. Numerous online music and movie services, entertainment companies, and consumer electronics firms have lined up to support the software, code-named Janus. The new DRM software has a "time bomb" feature, which will allow users to rent music and movies only for short periods. The idea is that "you will be paying a low monthly fee to fill your portable music player with thousands of songs, or renting a dozen movies to take with you on a Portable Media Center," says Amir Majidimehr, Microsoft corporate vice president.

The hearing on "Digital Music Interoperability and Availability" took place in Washington, D.C., in front of the House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary's Subcommittee on Courts, the Internet and Intellectual Property.

Every once in a while, the dance between trends and technology achieves an almost perfect state of synchronicity that changes the way we experience the world. This may be one of those times. Among the trends: five years ago, less than 13 percent of Internet users had a digital-music file on their computer. Now, 70 percent of computer users listen to music on their PCs. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. Last year, more than 100 million digital photos were taken. More and more people are using PCs to view videos. By the end of this year, 9.5 million TV tuner cards will have shipped.

Four million homes have Freeview

Freeview was launched in October 2002
More than four million homes in the UK now have access to the free-to-air digital service Freeview, according to new figures.

The BBC has said that this means its digital channels, radio networks and interactive services are now available in over 13 million UK households.

Freeview was launched in October 2002 as a replacement to ITV Digital.

It allows viewers access to over 50 channels by purchasing a set-top box, for a one-off fee of around £50.

The available channels include BBC Three and BBC Four, as well as Sky News, UK History and the shopping channel QVC.

Encouraging

The BBC has also said that Freeview's rise in popularity has helped to hasten digital take-up amongst analogue viewers, while establishing digital terrestrial television (DTT) as the second largest digital platform in the UK.

"The continued growth of digital television is very encouraging," said Andy Duncan, BBC Director of Marketing, Communications and Audiences.

"The Freeview figures show that the free proposition has really cut through and is currently the single most important factor in driving digital take-up."

The news comes just weeks after BSkyb announced it was planning to launch its own free-to-air digital service later this year.

Viewers will be able to purchase a set-top box for a one-off fee of £150, which will give them access to around 200 channels, including the BBC's digital services and Sky News.

However, unlike Freeview, a satellite dish will be needed to pick up the service.
