Roland Piquepaille writes "Computer scientists from the University of Bath have written a software which transforms your ordinary photographs and movies into cubist works of art and animation reminiscent of Picasso. They trained their software to identify important elements of a face, such as a nose, eye or mouth, until the computer learned how to recognize them on its own. This was achieved by giving the software a kind of 'aesthetic sense.' Then, by "using photographs of a subject taken from multiple points of view, the software automatically picks out important areas within the image, which are cut out as chunks. The chunks are statistically shuffled and a few of them randomly selected and distorted into a 'cubist' composition ready for digital painting." The software is not yet publicly available, but software and animation companies have expressed interest. My blog contains additional references and images."

Is The Blood Red Water For Real? A discuss ion on egullet, of all places, suggests at least one of these shocking pictures (inside) has been retouched. A more interesting question is: is it OK to "enhance" real evidence, if the salient facts are true? Or even, more radically, if the cause is just and dedicated to save lives or relieve suffering?

Questions for PhotoShop Experts

Questions for PhotoShop Experts 05/18/2004 02:48 PM

Back in Cambridge now with 1500 photos from Ecuador and Peru.  All of the photos are in Olympus Raw Format, which Adobe PhotoShop CS supposedly understands.  Thus a few questions for those readers who are PhotoShop experts....

What I really like to do with my images is

1) make several sizes of JPEG from each original

2) wrap each JPEG in a black border

3) write a "copyright philg@mit.edu" note into the bottom right corner of each photo (within the black border but not at a constant x-y pixel location due to some pictures being horizonals and some being verticals)

4) maybe build a Web page showing thumbnails linked to other sizes (though I would be willing to do this myself afterwards with a Perl script)

Can this be done with PhotoShop CS batch processing or must I stick with ImageMagick and the almost-10-years-old Perl script that I've been using on Unix?

A Photoshop tutorial for photographers

A Photoshop tutorial for photographers 05/25/2004 02:37 PM
“Five years ago we sold our darkroom equipment and moved our image editing to the computer. The image editing software we chose was Adobe Photoshop. It took us about a year to be able to make images from the computer that were as good as ones we had made in our wet darkroom. Today we are making images that we could not even have dreamed of making before. Since then our expertise in Photoshop has increased many times over, but our basic workflow has remained the same.”

Great tutorial explaining how to use Photoshop to create four different after-effects (Soft Focus, Drawing, Moody, Lomo) and then encapsulating all the steps as macros you can install. It's a great and dinstinctively Internet-era means of instruction: "Here is a set of steps that can be used to make a tool; here is a packaged tool -- you can use the packaged tool, but now that you understand how it was made, you can also make your own variants." Smugmug Online Photoshop

Smugmug Online Photoshop 03/19/2005 02:22 AM

Why would anyone pay $29.95 for an online photo album? Well what if it gave you a smooth and beautiful interface, unlimited photo storage, and huge photo size limits, the ability to backup your online album, your users can download the original size photo which you uploaded and the ability to upload 100's of photos at once. Upload from your cellphone, and never see any ads or spam pop-ups.  Oh yes, post photos to blogs and forums, password protect the embarrassing ones, and monitor visitors to the site that has your own vanity name. That's just for starters.

Smugmug gives you as much as you need. They offer three levels of membership starting at $29.95 with the Pro level at $99.95 which allows you to run your own online store. I will list the levels and the services below, but the one thing you cannot list is the speed, ease of use, and the ability to change the album to your specific look and feel. I love this online photo shop the best of any I’ve found. I know Flickr has been getting a lot of press, but give Smugmug a look-see and let me know what you think.

If you decide to purchase a plan from Smugmug, I can save you $5 on a membership by using this code "t7xidGXRdLOYw" in the referred by field in the signup form.

Detecting Photoshop Hacks

Detecting Photoshop Hacks 07/29/2004 06:47 PM

For Doctored Photos, a New Flavor of Digital Truth Serum: A group of folks out at Dartmouth College are breaking new ground in the art of detecting if images have been altered or not. You just can't believe a picture anymore. Especially not on this site.

For example, when two images are spliced together — like the picture of a shark attacking a helicopter that has circulated around the Internet in the past few years — one or both of the original pictures usually has to be shrunk, enlarged or rotated to make the pieces fit together. And those changes, no matter how artful, leave clues behind.

Take a picture that is 10 pixels by 10 pixels, for a total of 100. Stretch it to 10 by 20 pixels, and image-editing software like Adobe Photoshop will assign the picture's original pixels to every other slot in the new picture. That leaves 100 pixels "blank," or without values. Image-editing software fills in the gaps by examining what their neighbors look like, and then applying an average. To oversimplify, if pixel A is blue, and pixel C is red, the blank pixel B will become purple.
