When Steve Mallett recently cloned
del.icio.us to create
de.lirio.us, the predictable
controversy ensued. Here's a capsule summary:
Good! del.icio.us is closed-source, the world needs an
open-source social bookmarking service.
Bad! Geez, what a lame ripoff!
Rather than taking sides in this debate -- which I can't do, because I
sympathize with both positions while endorsing neither -- I'd like to
try to broaden its scope.

Mistaking Content For Services Again
08/23/2004 05:03 AMThe NY Times is running an article about how the return of internet
advertising, combined with the highly sought after demographic info of
those who play fantasy sports games online means that
the entrance fees
are getting pushed down, as advertising or indirect business
advantages are more than making up for the difference. For example,
Best Buy is now offering a fantasy sports service for free under the
belief that it encourages users to watch more television, in which
case they're more likely to want a newer, better television --
possibly from Best Buy. While that may seem like a fairly weak
connection, if they do sell a few more TVs maybe it pays for itself.
However, my real issue in mentioning this article is that it (once
again) confuses content with services. The beginning of the article
keeps talking about how fantasy sports leagues are one of the "success
stories" for paid content. That's incorrect. No one signs up for a
fantasy sports league for "content." All of that content is available
for free. They're signing up for the service of organizing it and
letting them manage the teams and communicate with others in the
league. We've pointed to this
confusio
n many times before -- and it's important to make the distinction,
because too many sites think these things mean they can charge for
online
content, when most of the success stories online are
companies charging for
services.
Publishers Still Confusing Content And
Services
Publishers Still Confusing Content And
Services
05/13/2004 05:00 PMWhy is it so difficult to understand the difference between content
and services? The Online Publishers Association comes out with a
study every few months about the "online content" market, and they
always get it wrong. We've pointed this out
before
a>, but it appears the OPA folks aren't listening or don't care. They
highlight the latest study by saying that paid online content has
grown 19% - but, once again, the biggest portion of that "content"
is dating sites. No one pays for
content on a dating site.
The content is always free. People pay to
connect - which is
the service those dating sites offer. Instead of recognizing this,
the OPA is encouraging more sites to start doomed plans to charge for
"content." Charging for content is increasingly difficult. Charging
for services is increasingly easy. Misunderstanding the two is going
to lead to many bad business model decisions.

Aggregator NewsGator 2.0 Adds
Synchronization, Online Services
Integration, and Powerful Tools for
Developers
01/07/2004 06:31 PMLatest Version of NewsGator, the Premier News Aggregator for
Microsoft Outlook, Adds Support for Multiple Machines and
Synchronization with Other Platforms and Mobile Devices, In Addition
to Powerful Developer Tools and Other Capabilities.
LAS VEGAS and Denver, CO -- January 7, 2004 -- NewsGator 2.0, a new
version of the popular news aggregator, was announced today by
NewsGator Technologies at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
NewsGator retrieves news from news sites, weblogs, newsgroups, and
other information sources that support the RSS or Atom syndication
formats, and automatically integrates the news items into Microsoft
Outlook. RSS (Rich Site Summary) News Syndication is an emerging
method of staying abreast with rapidly changing information and allows
users to sort, organize, group and search news in multiple ways. Using
NewsGator, users can read content offline making information readily
accessible any time.
Major New features in NewsGator 2.0:
- NewsGator Online Services integration -- NewsGator 2.0 includes
tight integration for the new NewsGator Online Services platform,
which allows users to take advantage of powerful subscription
synchronization capabilities. Users can also read related content
displayed on the NewsPage, seamlessly access custom search feeds, and
easily locate exclusive premium content.
- Subscription synchronization -- When used with the new NewsGator
Online Services platform, NewsGator 2.0 allows users to synchronize
their subscriptions between multiple machines, as well as other
editions of NewsGator available with NewsGator Online Services.
- NewsGator Extension API -- NewsGator 2.0 has a powerful new API
available for third-party developers, allowing them to build
extensions to NewsGator to support numerous new scenarios. With this
move, NewsGator extends beyond just an application, becoming a
platform allowing developers to build a variety of new
applications.
- Arbitrary RSS extension support -- NewsGator 2.0 is the first
mainstream content aggregation tool to support arbitrary extensions in
RSS or Atom feeds. Users or publishers can add arbitrary content into
their feeds, and NewsGator is now able to process this custom data.
Users can modify the rendering of items, add columns in Outlook, or
build custom extension processors in .NET. For example, an extension
can be written to add an appointment to the Outlook calendar when a
meeting is announced in a feed. The possibilities are particularly
exciting for businesses looking to integrate workflow applications
with RSS and Atom feeds.
There are many other new capabilities and features in NewsGator
2.0, including support for enclosures and attachments in feeds,
customizable rendering, and much more. And while NewsGator has always
been tightly integrated with Internet Explorer to allow easy
subscription to new feeds, NewsGator 2.0 enhances this integration
with single-click subscription to feeds from a web site.
NewsGator 2.0 works with Microsoft Outlook 2000 or later, and will
be available on January 19, 2004 from http://www.newsgator.com. Pricing
is $29 (U.S.) per copy, with quantity discounts available.

The Difference Between Online Content
And Broadcast Content
The Difference Between Online Content
And Broadcast Content
02/10/2004 02:46 PMMajor League Baseball made news last year for
claim
ing to own all in-progress game data - saying they were going to
go after websites that reported what was happening at a game in
real-time. It didn't matter that the law is pretty clear that you
can't copyright facts - MLB believes that just presenting the data is
a "rebroadcast" of the game. That said, I guess it's no surprise to
hear that they now believe that web audio and video broadcasts of
games should work the same way as television broadcasts with a content
provider
paying a huge
upfront fee for the rights to the games, and then telling them
they can make it back in ad revenue and subscription fees. Of course,
the various internet sites they've approached with this plan have been
laughing them out the door, and pointing out that they're not
television stations, and they just want to provide something useful to
their users - but aren't going to lose money to do so. While MLB has
been at the forefront of offering streaming video and audio, it
appears they still look on this as a broadcast medium, and not the
interactive medium it actually is. They're doing their best to
squeeze more money out of existing fans, rather than attract new fans,
which is dangerous for the future of the sport. Not only do you anger
your biggest fans, you also make it less likely that you're going to
pick up new fans.
