Computers Obeying Brain Signals (AP) 04/03/2005 07:58 PM

AP - Researchers and volunteers around the world are taking early steps toward a complex but straightforward technological goal: to use electrical signals from the brain as instructions to computers and other machines, allowing paralyzed people to communicate, move around and control their environment literally without moving a muscle.

Over at Salon, they're taking a look at the world of neuroprostheses - "medical devices that connect directly to the human brain, spinal cord or nerves." It turns out that there's been quite a lot of work done in the field, from the fairly mundane to the much more advanced. However, the writer suggests two major hurdles in making most of these devices mainstream. The FDA's costly approval process makes it so that almost all of these devices would be financially unsound investments. Second, Medicare refuses to reimburse patients who get such devices a reasonable amount. Of course, some might take the point of view that when you're messing with such things, perhaps it makes sense to have a careful review process. However, the article makes a convincing argument that (at least) their should be some middle ground to encourage these products to move forward.

Microsoft Not Obeying Antitrust Rules
Again... Maybe
03/19/2005 03:17 AM
It looks like Microsoft may be doing the same thing in Europe that it was accused of doing in the US a while back. After being dinged for antitrust violations and being told to make changes... it just kept on doing what it was doing. So, it's really no surprise to hear EU regulators complaining that Microsoft is not following through with its promise to make products more compatible with others. However, the case really isn't all that clear cut. They're judging this based on the market, rather than on what Microsoft has actually done. Of course, that might just indicate that they were wrong in their original assessment, and perhaps the problem wasn't that Microsoft had compatibility problems, but with something else entirely. If that were the case, Microsoft could make their systems more compatible every day for the rest of our lives and it wouldn't mean that the market situation would change.

Military To Jam GPS Signals

Military To Jam GPS Signals 06/14/2004 03:33 AM
If you're out on a boat on the east coast this week, don't expect to rely on your GPS navigation system. It appears that the government isn't just interested in jamming mobile phones for military reasons - but are now testing systems to jam GPS signals along the east coast as well. They've been trying to get the message out, but it's likely that some people out on their boats may find themselves a bit less sure of where they are. Of course, it was partly because of this very threat of US jamming of GPS signals that Europe has been working on their own satellite location system, Galileo - which will be independent of military control. This also might mean that any jamming by the US of GPS won't much matter once Galileo is up and running.

Pedestrian Turn Signals, Huh?

Pedestrian Turn Signals, Huh? 07/23/2004 01:25 PM

pedestrian.jpg
Hello again, Gizmodeans and Gizmodettes. As Joel said, I'm here to take over for the day. As he didn't say, I am so very not good at gadget news. I've been searching all morning for gadget news, and everything I find has already been on Gizmodo for days or weeks on end.

So here is the first of the many really uninteresting things I've found that seem to be new: Pedestrian turn signals (spotted on The Red Ferret Journal). They fit behind your ear and are wired to a little controller that lets you turn one or both of them on. I have no idea if they even blink. Sorry.

At the end of the day, I'll link to a really cool game that I think you'll all like, but until then, please don't yell at Joel when I link to stupid things like this and cool things that have already been on Gizmodo. I'm using the convenient Search box at the top of the site, but who truly knows what V770s, S320s, and SXRDs lurk in the heart of the Big G? Well, besides all of you and none of me.
