12/02/2003 12:56 AMWhen I vote for an article, it sometimes happens that an article is
not bad per se, but is so poorly formatted, lacking links, or full of

"Move back to Edit Queue" button, similar to the "Move to Vote"

The Zen Of Button Mashing
The Zen Of Button Mashing
04/11/2005 11:42 PMCan you get a sense of zen from a video game review? Clive Thompson
is discussing his latest video game reviews for Slate, and notes that,
while describing one of the games, he realized
the zen aspects of "button mashing." Button mashing,
of course, is the experience of playing a particularly complex
fighting game where the inexperienced player has absolutely no clue of
the various combinations and how to use them, and is forced, instead,
into random button mashing: just pushing all the buttons in a random
order and praying that something actually works. Hardcore gamers, of
course, recognize button mashing as the sign of a rank amateur who has
no business being near the console. However, Thompson finds that
button mashing is a form of zen learning -- and that by continuing to
button mash on a new game, one can get a grasp of the intricacies of
the moves, and eventually learn to step out of the character and use
the buttons more effectively. Of course, others might just call this
trial by error, but it's probably all relative anyway.

Microsoft patents Tab button use
09/08/2004 02:36 PMA patent for which Microsoft applied on March 6, 1997, has been
granted: "Discoverability and navigation of hyperlinks via tabs." In
other words, when a computer user uses the Tab key to move the focus
from one hyperlink to another on a webpage opened in a browser, the
use of that function is now owned by Microsoft.
The Tab patent, number 6,785,865, was granted on August 31st, just one
among multiple patents granted to the software giant on that day.
Another interesting grant is number 6,784,354, with an application
date of March 13, 2003: "Generating a music snippet." Yes, you read
that right. Now dividing a music stream into portions is Microsoft's
domain.

ATA over Ethernet driver 2.6-8 (For
Linux 2.6 branch)
03/24/2005 04:09 PM
This driver allows the Linux kernel to use the ATA over Ethernet (AoE)
network protocol. Using AoE, a Linux system can use AoE block devices
like EtherDrive (R) storage blades. The block devices appear as local
device nodes (e.g. /dev/etherd/e0.0).
Changes:
The configuration of allowable network interfaces has been fixed and
improved. A module load option and a corresponding boot option now
allow the interfaces list to be set when driver is initialized.
Userland software has been split out into the separate aoetools
package. Documentation has been updated and improved.

ATA over Ethernet driver 10 (For Linux

04/11/2005 05:14 PM
This driver allows the Linux kernel to use the ATA over Ethernet (AoE)
network protocol. Using AoE, a Linux system can use AoE block devices
like EtherDrive (R) storage blades. The block devices appear as local
device nodes (e.g. /dev/etherd/e0.0).
Changes:
A bugfix makes the driver record the new MAC address when a new
EtherDrive blade is inserted into the same shelf and slot from which a
previous blade has been removed. The firmware version of each aoe
device is now visible through a "fwver" file in sysfs.

Unisys suddenly loves Linux: Should

Unisys suddenly loves Linux: Should
Linux users return that love?
08/16/2004 02:19 PM Unisys has long been the main booster -- possibly the only one
besides Microsoft -- of Windows as a mainframe operating system. Now
Unisys says it loves Linux -- but still claims to be a staunch
Microsoft partner -- and it seems like most of its contributions to
the Linux kernel are only useful to Unisys customers. And then there's
the specter of the Unisys GIF patents (now expired), and how the
company used them as weapons against free and open source software
projects only a few years ago. In light of all this, should we welcome
Unisys as a "member of the Linux community" with open arms, or
maintain a skeptical distance until the company proves that it has
truly seen the open source light?
