Early Bird Receipts Are Important

Early Bird Receipts Are Important

Early Bird Receipts Are Important 04/02/2005 11:52 AM

Be aware you will need your original cash register receipt, not a copy, when you mail in your Walmart Early Bird coupon. Seems very odd to require the, but it's there on the package plain as day. This will be especially important if anybody happens to buy one on eBay and doesn't realize the receipt is required.

Early bird syndrome linked to genetic

Early bird syndrome linked to genetic
mutation
03/31/2005 11:46 PM
David Pescovitz: In this week's issue of Nature, neuroscientists report that they've implicated a single gene mutation in Familiar Advanced Sleep Phase Syndrome (FASPS), or "early bird syndrome." Often, people who have this condition have no choice but to crash in the early evening and wake up long before dawn. From National Geographic News:
"The net result is you can feel very isolated," (FASPS sufferer Susan) Middlebrook said. "Who wants to party at three in the morning? Nobody I know, and I'm not headed to the local bar to see who's still there." Instead, she quietly cleans the house, makes breakfast, or cuddles up with a book.

About three-tenths of a percent of the world's population lives like this, including two of Middlebrook's sisters, her daughter, and her mother. "Their whole clock is shifted," said Ying-Hui Fu, a neuroscientist at the University of California, San Francisco...

The researchers are not yet certain how the gene mutation works to shift people's sleep time. But laboratory experiments suggest mutation slows the activity of a protein called casein kinase I delta (CKIdelta). "The next step is to figure out why," Fu said.

Making E-Voting Systems With Paper
Receipts Even Better

Making E-Voting Systems With Paper
Receipts Even Better
06/08/2004 10:50 AM
With all the talk lately about e-voting, one thing that continually gets mixed up is exactly what the fight is over. Those who are fighting to keep the existing machines like to claim that those who want a verifiable paper trail are fighting against progress - trying to go backwards away from electronic voting to a paper world. Of course, nothing can be further from the truth. Those who want the verifiable paper receipt aren't against electronic voting at all. They just understand the technology enough to realize that the current system isn't particularly secure or reliable and they want to make it better. Once you start going down that trail, however, you need to come up with a system that really is more secure and reliable, and that's where some researchers are putting a lot of attention these days. They're trying to go beyond just adding a verifiable paper ballot, to using systems to make sure that you can check after-the-fact, to guarantee that your vote really was properly counted. Most of the article focuses on David Chaum's system, which tends to bring out very strong opinions in people (too often focused on Chaum, himself, rather than the system). The argument against such systems is that they're either too complex or too expensive (or both), but no one ever said democracy was supposed to be cheap.

Election Officials Hoping E-Voting
Machines With Paper Receipts Fail

Election Officials Hoping E-Voting
Machines With Paper Receipts Fail
05/27/2004 11:04 AM
You would think that the goal of an election official would be to help guarantee the most accurate election possible, promoting the benefits of democracy. However, it seems that that's not true at all. We've already talked about election officials who have decided to ignore rules requiring their electronic voting machines be more secure and others who are suing because they don't want to make their machines more secure. However, now that Nevada is going to use e-voting machines with a paper trail, many election officials are hoping the machines will fail just to say "I told you so!" Once again, they're missing the point. It is very likely that some of the machines will have bugs - and all of these election officials will start screaming about them. However, the problem with the current e-voting machines is that no one knows if there are bugs or not in how the votes are actually counted. Just because you've set up the system to not inform you if something goes wrong, it doesn't mean that everything has gone right. Shouldn't we trust a system that will at least let us double check if something has gone wrong more than one that doesn't let us check at all? Of course, the article notes that the paper trail in these Nevada elections will be useless, because it doesn't qualify as a legitimate ballot to be recounted. In other words, the only point of using e-voting with the paper trail in these elections is to see if the machines jam up, and then let election officials complain loudly about the problems with paper receipt e-voting machines.

BIRD BY
BIRD

BIRD BY
BIRD
08/02/2004 03:38 PM
heronThe best thing about Anne Lamott's Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing & Life is, even when the thought of sitting down and writing is about as appealing to you as root canal work, she inspires you to want to write. That alone is worth the investment. The book is full of mostly well-established wisdom about the art of writing, but it's written intelligently and with great humour and passion. She really practices what she preaches.

She takes you through the standard rules: Write every day at the same time, always write something each day, no matter how brief, or how hard it is; break the job into manageable tasks ("take it bird by bird"); start with short assignments and "shitty first drafts" that just get everything down, and edit later; avoid perfectionism; write about what you know; use your own authentic voice and style; use index cards as reminders, phone friends and experts to get background material you need quickly and authentically, and use writing groups and trusted readers to keep you going and honest. She explains how to deal with writer's block, agents, publishers, and jealousy of other (successful but clearly inferior) writers.

What I liked best about the book were some of the humbler, lesser known rules of good writing:
  • Stories tell themselves through you, so it's critical to find means to silence the noise in your head and let them come out
  • Flawed, hopeful narrators are great voices, and points of view, from which to tell your story
  • Plot need be nothing more than the discovery of what each of your characters cares about, revealed vividly and continuously
  • Characters must show strength or courage to be sympathetic
  • Dialogue must be authentic and individual, yet concise and fast-moving
  • Good writers must be observant, reverent, and even startled by life and its lessons
  • Great stories are about great truths, things the writer cares passionately about that come out in the writing: "To be a good writer you not only have to write a great deal, but you have to care."
  • You must trust yourself and your intuition, especially with first drafts, not self-criticize and second guess every step
  • You have to give the best you have always, not save it up for the next story
  • Writers have a duty to the reader to be honest, to make things clearer, to help heal readers' "gaping wounds and dazed expressions", to soothe
The book includes an extraordinary 2-page story by the author that illustrates these and other points: It is charming, heartbreaking, full of surprises, imbued with the author's great love for two very special characters, imbued as well with a bit of wonderful, spare, dialogue, some stunning imagery and an improbable analogy. But mostly, the story moves, and in so doing it takes the reader along for the ride.

Until you can read Bird by Bird for yourself, here are two quotes by other accomplished writers about the art of writing:

"The greatest writing is done on the edge of what you know and what you don't know."
-- Beth Nielsen Chapman

"The skill of writing is to create a context in which other people can think."
-- Edwin Schlossberg

Receipt, please

Receipt, please 11/04/2003 12:47 AM

Not to sound all Andy Rooney, but there's something that really bugs me and it keeps coming up again and again and it's just so stupid I can't take it anymore:

I am sick of having to save receipts and I'm sick of having to present paper receipts as proof of anything anymore.

We live in a mechanized, computerized society. Every purchase from my debit/credit card is a sophisticated, multi-step electronic shuffling of digital cash from my bank to a store, and everything I buy in a store is recorded in a database, backed up redundantly, and analyzed, but in the end, I'm given a pointless piece of paper that stands as my only proof of our transaction, despite the deep data trail formed between me and a store.

The other day I borrowed some fabric swatches from a Lowes store, and it required a $25 deposit that would be returned when I brought it back. A couple days of color matching and I was done with the samples and took them with me into Lowes for the return. I didn't have a receipt (they didn't mention it was required), but they had my name, address, and phone number both written down on a sheet of checked out fabric books, and in their store's database. I had my driver's license with me and presented it as well. There's virtually no chance I could have been posing as someone else given all those bits of identification, but no receipt, I could get no refund and I was given store credit instead of real money. It was stupid, but I figured I was there to spend a couple hundred dollars on tools and stuff so it didn't really matter.

But recently while shopping at BestBuy, I purchased a washer and dryer and actually sprang for their cheesy extra warranty (first time in my life -- I only gave into the scam because it was a new brand without a track record of reliability). I was told repeatedly that the warranty was null and void unless I kept a copy of a special extra receipt that printed out (and it was suggested I make copies if the first one happens to be destroyed or lost). Now obviously, BestBuy has my home address (they delivered the units days later), my purchase history, and my financial details in their customer database that allowed them to print out the receipt in the first place, but if I happen to lose this piece of paper in the next five years, my five year warranty doesn't exist. The record of our transaction will likely be recorded in their databases for 7 to 10 years, but it's up to me to prove that I bought something from them.

We've been moving to a paperless society for the past 20 years and increasingly I rely on programs on my computer or Google to store memories, details, and facts about my past. I take photographs that only exist as digital bits. Almost every important life detail is stored as a message somewhere in my 300Mb email archive. All these things help me externalize information but keep it at my fingertips until I need it. I suspect businesses and banks have much more robust data technology but it's probably just as electronic as mine.

And yet, in 2003, I have to save a piece of paper for five years if I ever want my washer fixed under the purchased warranty. It's as if all parties have agreed that despite our level of data sophistication, we'll instead act as if it's 75 years ago and everything that matters ends up in a big paper ledger somewhere, and unless it's in the big paper book, it never happened. Dumb, isn't it?
