Online Shopping Up, But Some Fears
Remain
12/02/2003 12:13 AM

It wouldn't have taken special powers to predict that there would be even more online sales this year than last year on the day after Thanksgiving, so it's no surprise to hear that's exactly what happened. In the meantime, though, another study shows that many shoppers are afraid of scams and spam associated with buying online - and are much more willing to buy from trusted online vendors than smaller unknown vendors.

People Say Phishing Fears Will Stop Them
From E-Shopping
05/05/2004 05:10 PM
A new study is claiming that fear of phishing scams means that people are doing less shopping and banking online. Of course, the study was done by asking people if they were less likely to shop or bank online due to fear of phishing. It didn't actually check to see what they're actually doing. Furthermore, despite all the talk about phishing scams, I wonder how many people actually know what phishing is. Phishing, by itself, shouldn't scare anyone off from shopping or banking online, assuming the person doing the shopping or banking knows enough to go to sites directly, rather than clicking randomly from an email.

Security Fears Hold Back Online Banking

Security Fears Hold Back Online Banking 12/02/2003 12:13 AM
While banks have been caught off-guard about how quickly online banking caught on, there are still plenty of people who won't go near it, because they have concerns about the security of the online banking offerings from their banks. Banks are still trying to lure new customers by dropping fees or offering discounts for using online banking. Of course, if the big problem is security fears, you would think the proper thing to do would be (a) make sure the security is as good as can be and (b) advertise that fact. Unfortunately, actually improving security doesn't seem like it's at the top of the list for some of these banking sites.

November

American consumers spent $8.8 billion on Internet shopping in November, representing a 19 percent increase over one year ago and a 62 percent increase over November 2002 spending. According to an eSpending Report released by Goldman Sachs, & Co., Harris Interactive and Nielson/NetRatings, consumers spent the most on apprarel/clothing at $1.5 billion, followed by toys/video games (hardware and software) at $1 billion. The video/DVD category followed with $882 million and the books and music category rounded out the top five with $621 million and $481 million, respectively. Categories recording the highest growth in holiday dollars for November 2004 included toys/video games (hardware and software) with a 43 percent increase, videos/DVDs with a 39 percent increase and the music category with a 32 per cent increase. The eSpending Report is based on weekly surveys of more than 1,000 U.S. adult respondents and does not include money spent on travel purchases. In a separate report, Nielson/NetRatings said online consumers spent $919 million on travel in November 2004, an increase of 11 percent from a year earlier. Visits to online travel websites represented 46 per cent of all active Web surfing.

The UPS man just drove up, but gave me the courtesy honk before coming to a rest in front of my house. The "hi! I'm here!" honk! When I was a kid the only person in the neighborhood that got that honk from the UPS truck ran a mail order business from their home. I haven't bought anything off ebay in weeks, but he has been here twice this week. Time to back away from the computer...
