Direct and Related Links for 'Breaking News: eBay Hacked!'

(Breaking News!) While I am still trying to confirm all of the details, it appears that eBay may have been hacked into by the Nigerian 419 syndicate. South African police are claiming that those affected by this potentially serious situation are South African credit card holders. I have received no information whatsoever regarding other countries at risk. Reports are indicating that eBay is not commenting at all regarding this situation….

Breaking News: No Two Terabyte Card So
Stop Asking

Breaking News: No Two Terabyte Card So
Stop Asking
08/11/2004 09:58 AM

Aaah, you guys are killing me. The new µcard format can reach sizes of UP TO TWO TERABYTES, yes, I know. What you all seem to be missing is that it ISN'T A TWO TERABYTE CARD YET. Nobody knows what sizes they will release first, but I bet you all eight million ass coins that they will be available in the standard 512MB and 1GB versions like everything else. Maybe they'll get showy and launch with a TWO GIGABYTE card. But I promise you - swear to you on the grave of our rotting savior - there will be NO TWO TERABYTE MEMORY CARD NEXT YEAR.

And as I said in my first story, even Sony's current Memory Stick Duo and Pro formats support sizes up to two terabytes, but that doesn't mean you can go down to the Recockulous Memory Store and pick up a 2TB card. The real news of the µcard format is that it has a fast transfer speed. But that's it! That's all there is! No two terabyte cards! Stop asking!

Pictures
06/24/2004 11:13 AM

sonyvodafone.jpg imagePocket-Lint brings to our attention the F500i camera phone, the first Sony Ericsson phone on the Vodafone UK network. What it does, you see, is take VGA-quality digital photographs and then, while this might be shocking to those unprepared, also allows you to make a telephone call over the airwaves using a tiny, integrated "cellular" radio. Yes, folks, it's a camera, but also a phone! Oh. You've ... seen ... ah.

Well, it has a tiny 3D chip and games! Did you know that? Ah ha! As I thought.

Musicians Making Lots Of Money, Money,

Musicians Making Lots Of Money, Money,
Money...
09/03/2004 02:40 PM
Jeremiah writes "Amidst the public ballyhoo about how rampant P2P piracy is costing the music business its very life (gasp! NO!), BMI announced it collected a record level of revenue and royalty payout to its artist members. From their press release: "BMI has reported revenues of $673 million for the 2004 fiscal year, an increase of nearly $43 million, 6.8% over the prior year. Royalties of more than $573 million were distributed to our songwriters, composers and music publishers, an increase of $40 million or 7.5% from the previous year, and the most ever paid by an American PRO." Another interesting tidbit: "During the period 1995-2004, BMI had an average annual revenue growth rate of 9%..." If I read this right, BMI has been reporting solid growth over the last nine years, which makes me question the industry's claims about P2P. Either P2P ate into their growth (not mentioned), they found a way to cope with it (plausible), or it may actually help music sales. Whatever. Reminds me a bit of a spec I did for a life-insurance company's radio ad: Money , Money, Money (mp3 file)."

Stephenson's money-centric interview on

Stephenson's money-centric interview on
Wired News
04/15/2004 01:10 PM
Paul Boutin conducted an interview with Neal Stephenson for Wired News in honour of Neal's new book, Confusion, sequel to the Leibnitzpunk doorstopper Quicksilver, a book that I like more and more the further I get from it (that is, when I read it, I liked it OK, but the more I think about it, the better I like it). Paul got Stephenson to expound for quite a while on money and what it means, a subject on which Neal has many interesting and rarely-heard things to say.
[M]oney is a sort of medium for the exchange of information. When the price of cloth went up in Antwerp, it was because the system of international trade, in some fashion that's too complex for us to understand, was transmitting information about the supply/demand balance. Money makes that kind of information flow better.

Nowadays money is electronic and there's plenty of it. Back then, money had to be silver or gold. In those days silver came from the Spanish colonies of Mexico and Peru, and gold came from the Portuguese colony of Brazil. It was transported across the Atlantic to Europe, though English and other privateers did their best to intercept it en route. Some of it circulated in European markets, some was hoarded in the vaults of wealthy families and institutions, and a lot of it flowed east toward India and China. China was notoriously hungry for silver. It was a complicated flow pattern, with any number of sources and sinks and eddies and feedback loops, and like any other such system it was capable of chaotic behavior. If enough people hoarded their metal, a money shortage would develop, which would make it very difficult to conduct trade on any level beyond that of a village market, and throttle the flow of information.
