Blaming The Mobile Phone For Economic
Troubles, Stupidity
09/10/2004 10:43 AMSomeone who prefers to be anonymous sent in this opinion piece,
supposedly written by an economics professor at Kyoto University
looking at the troubles in the Japanese economy over the last thirteen
years and then, at the very end,
blaming it all on mobile phones. The article looks at consumer
electronics, the entertainment industry and the automobile industry,
but then shifts gears to look at mobile phones, noting that even while
mobile phone sales are "booming," it's done nothing to help the
economy. Then, the professor points out that so much mobile phone use
is leading to high bills which "dampen household spending" (assuming,
of course, that "household spending" doesn't include mobile phone
bills). Then, even though he has already complained that entertainment
revenues are down because there aren't "sufficient" services to
provide them, he complains that Japanese young people are "wasting
hours each day" text messaging and playing online games. Finally, he
concludes: "The cell phone is the cause of the business slowdown as
well as the erosion in young people's intelligence and scholastic
abilities." So, basically, it sounds like the thesis is that spending
on mobile phone service is somehow "bad" because it takes away from
other spending, which is somehow "good." Seems a bit hard to back up.

02/10/2004 02:56 AMIn a much ballyhooed essay, Clay Shirky suggests that social software
bears some of the responsibility for Dean's loss in Iowa and New
Hampshire. David Weinberger, who has a good looking new blog at
Corante, thinks the idea is dangerous speculation at best, and perhaps
nonsense at worst. I agree. Blaming social software for Dean's loss is
like is blaming the arrangement of deck chairs on the Titanic for its
sinking. Most Americans still get the vast majority of their news from
TV, and I think you have to look first at the idiotic and sometimes
vitriolic press coverage of Dean (build him up so you can beat him
down, "is he electable", the scream, etc.), plus Dean's own stumbles,
for reasons for the failure of his insurgent campaign to do as well as
the media predicted he would. Occam's Razor would suggest that is
sufficient....

iTunes Affiliates
iTunes Affiliates
09/10/2004 05:14 AMI have to say I’m a tad underwhelmed by the
iTunes Affiliate
Scheme.
This site got turned down for one of the following reasons :
- The content is unrelated to iTunes
- Your site is temporarily down or under construction.
- A wrong or misspelled URL given in the application.
- Your site is aesthetically unpleasing
- Your site promotes tobacco, alcohol or excessive drinking/drug
use
- Your site contains extreme religious content
- Your site is international (with a majority of visitors based
OUTSIDE the US)
I’m pretty sure this site fails on the last one (hopefully
no-one considers this site to be ‘aesthetically
unpleasing’ or my writing to induce ‘excessive drug
use’). This is a real bummer for those of us outside the US
(yep, we don’t
all live in America). If there’s
one thing that really bugs me about Apple, it’s the blinkers
they have when it comes to the rest of the world. It took us long
enough to get the iTunes Music Store here in Europe…
Anyway, despite the whole non-US thing, the scheme appears to be run
by a third party organisation called the
LinkShare network. Immediately
this is a disappointment as I was expecting the scheme to run within
the Apple website (possibly using your Apple ID or .Mac account). I
wouldn’t think it’d be too difficult to get some web
development people on the case at Apple. After all, Amazon and Google
manage to offer nicely integrated affiliate schemes.
Once an account has been created (after negotiating a horrendous form
on the Apple website), you are sent a barrage of confusing e-mails
eventually directing you to the LinkShare website. The e-mails
encourage you to join up to Apple iTunes via LinkShare and create your
links using their system. After bombing out fairly early I
didn’t get the chance the sign up and create some links, so
I’d be interested to hear from others who have managed this
successfully (I have a feeling the process is not as easy as it should
be).
I was looking forward to getting some iTunes links on this site (if
only to make a few bob on my own purchases), but I’m left
feeling disappointed by the whole process. The current
LinkShare-powered system only serves to discourage site owners from
becoming affiliates — a situation obviously at odds with
Apple’s intentions.
Mel Gibson, the Jews, Haiti, and blaming

Mel Gibson, the Jews, Haiti, and blaming
it all on people who died 175 years ago
03/08/2004 11:03 PMPeople are blaming all of the Jew-hatred in Mel
Gibson's new movie on the visions of a German nun, Sister
Anne Catherine Emmerich (1774-1824). According to this article from Newsday:
The bedridden visionary, who is said to have borne the stigmata and
the wounds of the crown of thorns, is a particular source of
contention for Gibson because of her depictions of Jews as
bloodthirsty and venal. In The Dolorous Passion, for instance,
she "sees" Jewish priests passing out bribes to get people to offer
false testimony against Jesus and even tipping the Roman executioners.
She also describes seeing Jesus' cross being built in the courtyard of
the Temple in Jerusalem.
And Emmerich's 19th-century
biographer, the Rev. C.E. Schmoe'ger, wrote about how she had one
vision of an "old Jewess Meyr," who confessed to her "that Jews in our
country and elsewhere strangled Christian children and used their
blood for all sorts of suspicious and diabolical
practices."
Gibson, who carries a relic of Emmerich in the form
of a faded piece of cloth from her habit, vehemently rejects
characterizations of the nun as anti-Semitic.
In other news... I was listening to NPR news a couple of
days ago. All of Haiti's current troubles were being blamed on
things that the French did in 1825 and this proposition was discussed
seriously for 15 minutes. Haiti does seem to be in rather tough
shape, at least going by the
CIA Factbook page:
"About 80% of the population lives in abject poverty.
... The economy shrank an estimated 1.2% in 2001 and an estimated 0.9%
in 2002. Literacy rate is 53%."
Despite an HIV infection rate of 6.1% and a lot of deaths
from AIDS the population is still growing at an annual rate of
1.67%, i.e., there are an ever-increasing number of Haitians to share
an ever-smaller pie. (cf. Malthus)
Perhaps there are more problems in our world of 2004 that
can be blamed on those French and Germans who died circa 1825...
Anyone care to suggest some dead Europeans to blame in the comments
section?

Blaming Anti-Virus Companies For Adding
To Spam Mess
01/29/2004 02:49 AMI'm sure I'm not the only person who noticed that plenty of the
annoying myDoom related messages that found their way into my inbox in
the last few days came from anti-virus companies telling me
(incorrectly) that I had sent someone a virus. I didn't send anyone
the virus. As everyone knows, myDoom works by spoofing the "from"
address - just like almost every other virus/worm these days. So, why
exactly, do anti-virus companies continue to send out these messages?
Found over at
Politech is a nice little rant about
just
how stupid it is that these anti-virus companies are continuing this
practice. In fact, the author claims that they're just as bad as
spammers. First of all, they know that these viruses and worms are
spoofing return addresses - yet they continue to send out such "you've
sent a virus" emails, even when they can be pretty sure it's not true.
At the very least, they should be smart enough to not send out such a
message on viruses that are known to spoof emails. Second, many of
these messages include annoying advertising for the anti-virus product
itself. Thus, it's unsolicited commercial email advertising - and it
even violates the CAN SPAM law by not offering an opt-out. So, from
now on, when you get such bogus anti-virus reports, you should report
them as spam to the proper authorities.

Ahoy, stalkers, crank yankers, and evil telemarketer scumbags!
Beginning this Wednesday, September 1, US-based online company
Star38.com will offer paying
subscribers a Caller ID falsification service. Make-believe you're the
White House! Or 1-800-CALL-ATT! Or, hell, get your '80s on and vamp
out in 867-5309! Kevin Poulsen of SecurityFocus tried it out, and
evidently the service checked out as providing what it promised. Users
complete an online form with phone number, number they want to call,
number they want to appear to be calling from; in a couple of seconds,
the system rings back to patch them through to their call destination.
But, like, in a secret numeric disguise: call recipients see the
spoofed number displayed on Caller ID.

URI schemes, I
am adding my vote to Dare
Obasanjo's proposal which is already in fairly wide use.
While I understand

expecting the world
to accept the right solution.

Update:
I should note that neither schemes address the need to support

implementing a series of web services designed to make it easier to
incorporate a PayPal option for commerce sites, along with traditional
credit cards. Of course, some are pointing out that the demand just
isn't there for such things. The end-users don't see much benefit if
the site already has a merchant account and can offer credit card
payments. There isn't much of a benefit to end users to use PayPal
when they can just as easily use a credit card. The only advantage is
to sites that can't afford or don't want a merchant account of their
own - and they're probably already using PayPal.
